Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen Are JonBenét Ramsey’s Parents in First Look at Netflix Series on Enduring True-Crime Case
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey will get its turn to tell the enduring, unsolved mystery of JonBenét Ramsey’s murder when the limited series comes to Netflix in December, with Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen stepping into the roles of JonBenét’s parents.

McCarthy and Owen make their debut as Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey, respectively, in the first photo released from the anticipated series, below. The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, produced by 101 Studios, releases all episodes Dec. 10 on Netflix.
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey was initially greenlit back in 2024 at Paramount+ before Paramount’s takeover by Skydance. Production on the series wrapped in early 2025 under the title Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenet Ramsey. The intent was to have it be the first installment of an anthology series, like Netflix’s Monster franchise, to examine unsolved crimes. But after Skydance took over Paramount, the series was quietly shelved. 101 Studios moved from Paramount to NBCUniversal earlier this year, following Taylor Sheridan, and the series then landed at Netflix this summer.
There has been no shortage of screen takes on the devastating murder of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey; the beauty pageant winner was found strangled in the basement of her Boulder, Colorado, family home on Dec. 26, 1996, and, 30 years later, mystery around her death remains. Netflix’s most recent doc Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey from filmmaker Joe Berlinger debuted at No. 1 on the streamer less than 24 hours after it released, in November 2024, and pointed the finger at the Boulder Police Department as for why the case remains unsolved.
Here’s the logline for The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey: “The series centers on one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history, and the devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the death of JonBenet Ramsey on Christmas night in 1996.”
Rounding out the cast is Emily Mitchell in the role of JonBenét Ramsey and Angus Caldwell as her brother, Burke Ramsey, along with Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, Shea Whigham, Owen Teague, Clifton Collins Jr., Jaime Ray Newman, Rory Cochrane and Chris Bauer.
Additional cast includes Will Patton, Jeremy Bobb, John Billingsley, Josh Stamberg, Margo Martindale and Tzi Ma.
Richard LaGravenese (Behind the Candelabra, Freedom Writers, A Family Affair) is showrunner, with Anne Sewitsky (Presumed Innocent) as a director and executive producer. Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach, who co-wrote the series, also executive produce. Executive producers also include David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and David Hutkin for 101 Studios; McCarthy and Sewitsky.
