Sony has global rights, excluding India, where Ramayana producer Prime Focus Studios will handle distribution. The film will get a release in multiple languages catered to local markets around the world.

The Ramayana is one of humanity’s oldest stories, an epic poem that centers on prince Rama, who spends years in exile and whose wife, Sita, is kidnapped by the demon king Ravana.

Filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari is behind the project. The Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi.

Oscar winners Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman provide music, while it also has action choreography by Terry Notary and Guy Norris and production design by Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal.

Prime Focus Studios’ Namit Malhotra produces the film. He is known as the founder of the visual effects company DNEG, which has credits including the Denis Villeneuve Dune films and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Interstellar and Tenet.

“For generations, the Ramayana has inspired people through its timeless humanity and enduring values. Our ambition has always been to honor that legacy while creating a cinematic experience worthy of audiences everywhere,” said Malhotra in a statement in July when news broke that Sony would distribute the film.

The Ramayana will arrive in theaters months after another classic epic, The Odyssey, was a hit in theaters. The Nolan film based on the Greek epic has topped $1.55 billion globally.
