The first season of Marshals ended with a literal bang that left the life of two characters hanging in the balance, while also placing star Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) in harm’s way heading into the second season of the Yellowstone spinoff.

Now the trailer (below) for the return of the mega-hit spinoff series reveals that the two characters in Kayce’s elite marshals unit — Cal, played by Logan Marshall-Green, and Belle, played by Arielle Kebbe — did indeed come out of that cliffhanger finale unscathed. The pair of actors told The Hollywood Reporter they would both be returning for season two, but the trailer confirms they are back in the mix when Kayce Dutton returns. Kayce and Tate, however, are still in harm’s way thanks to a new adversary.

Here’s the official logline for the series: “Marshals stars Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates – Pete Calvin (Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) – must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his confidantes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation.”

Marshals is one of two Yellowstone spinoffs — also including Dutton Ranch, starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser — to become a success for Yellowstone-verse Taylor Sheridan and Paramount+. The series earned a speedy season two renewal from CBS after it brought in 20.6 million viewers during its premiere week, based on Nielsen’s multi-platform ratings. Streaming on Paramount+ likely accounted for the bulk of the 11.08 million viewers who watched Marshals after its first showing on CBS.

Marshals season two premieres Sunday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. on CBS, streaming next day on Paramount+.
