\nOff Campus<\/em> star Stephen Kalyn is no stranger to the world of hockey. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe 28-year-old actor spent much of his young adult life at the hockey rink, playing the sport since the age of 6 and finished his minor hockey career in the AA tier. \u201cThat\u2019s what I wanted to do as a kid and all throughout my adolescence, that\u2019s kind of the life I wanted,\u201d he tells The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> on a recent Zoom.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor manages to exude levels of charm through a computer screen that would put his Off Campus<\/em> character Dean Di Laurentis to shame. He seems genuinely excited to talk about his character and is always ready to throw love toward his fellow costars.<\/p>\n

\n\tTowards the end of high school, it became apparent to Kalyn that hockey wasn\u2019t going to pan out. \u201cI could have continued playing and tried, but I knew it wasn\u2019t going to be,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI could still love the game no matter what, whether or not I\u2019m playing it or not. Luckily, I found acting,\u201d Kalyn says. He\u2019s been able to incorporate hockey throughout his career. But it still feels like a touch of fate that he\u2019s found himself in Prime Video\u2019s new series Off Campus<\/em>, the latest hockey romance series to hit streaming.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Markham, Ontario native found acting through a casting call for his high school\u2019s production of Grease<\/em> \u2014 he played Danny Zuko, of course. \u201cWhen the school day finished at 2:30, I\u2019d spend spend the next two hours in rehearsal with my drama teacher. I just fell in love with the whole process of it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019d always taken interest as a kid, but I never really got into it. I put more of my focus and energy into hockey,\u201d Kalyn says. \u201cIt was that moment then and there where I decided I going to do this. I don\u2019t know how I was going to do it, but I was going to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe\u2019s been steadily building up credits over the last several years, including stints on Prime Video\u2019s The Boys <\/em>spinoff Gen V<\/em> and Motorheads<\/em>. Kalyn has always considered himself an actor, but it wasn\u2019t until 2023 or 2024 when he was able to consider it his career. Amazon, he realizes during this conversation, must\u2019ve become aware of him and enjoyed his performances because he started to gain bigger parts. Of course, all roads led to Off Campus<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the Louisa Levy-created TV show, based on Elle Kennedy\u2019s book series, Kalyn plays Dean, a loveable party boy and member of the Briar University hockey team. Off Campus<\/em>\u2019 first season centers around Kennedy\u2019s first book in the series, The Deal<\/em>, with future seasons focusing on different couples, much like the books.<\/p>\n

\n\tKalyn originally auditioned for the role of John Logan, portrayed by Antonio Cipriano \u2014 auditioning for other roles within the show seems to be a common thread for the large ensemble cast. He sent in his tape, felt good about it and then didn\u2019t hear much back. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI thought, \u2018Oh, I guess that\u2019s not going to happen.\u2019 And then a couple months later, I think it was April, they sent out a thing for Dean,\u201d he says. The actor was coming off another callback and things were chaotic, so he told his manager he wasn\u2019t sure if he\u2019d be able to get the audition in and done. Adds Kalyn, \u201cMy manager said \u2018You have to do it. Do the Zoom. Don\u2019t do a self-tape. We\u2019re going to get you with the American casting, and you\u2019re going to be great.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt, obviously, was great and things started to move quickly. He remembers auditioning on a Wednesday and getting a call Thursday that the team wanted to meet on Friday. \u201cI was at the gym on the treadmill and was listening to Chappell Roan\u2019s \u201cPink Pony Club.\u201d I thought OK let\u2019s lock in here,\u201d he says, setting the scene.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the meeting and the hours-long chemistry reads that followed, he booked the part. \u201cI was slightly hyperventilating and getting a little bit lightheaded, but I ended up catching myself,\u201d he says. \u201cTo this day it\u2019s one of the greatest days and one of the greatest moments of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHockey, of course, became a big part of Kalyn\u2019s preparation for the series. Unlike his Off Campus<\/em> costars, that was something he already knew. Amazon put the four main men \u2014 Kalyn, Belmont Cameli, Cipriano and Jalen Thomas Brooks \u2014 through a two-week hockey bootcamp. He believes that\u2019s where he and the other men, whose dynamic serves as the throughline of the series, cemented their chemistry and bond.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was definitely fun for me because I knew what I was doing, but for them, I could see it being very frustrating because it\u2019s a very difficult sport to learn, especially when you\u2019re older,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n

\n\tKalyn was able to jump right back into things. \u201cI was there every day to help support my castmates. I would help them as much as I possibly could. I\u2019d even tie their skates sometimes,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor jokes that he would do what his father used to do for him. \u201cIf [the skate] was too loose, and I saw them going up there and could see their ankles were a little wobbly. I\u2019d be like, \u2018Jalen, come here,\u2019\u201d he continues.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the same way it feels fated that Kalyn, a lifelong hockey player, found a show that could let him achieve two of his dreams in one, the role of Dean was also a bit of manifestation. Just not from the actor himself. As a fan of Kennedy\u2019s book series, Kalyn\u2019s fianc\u00e9e might\u2019ve inadvertently sealed his Dean fate. \u201cI knew [Off Campus<\/em>] was popular through Victoria [his fianc\u00e9e]. She read these books a long time ago, and her favorite book was The Score<\/em>,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe actually made a comment on Goodreads years ago. She wrote something like \u2018Lean, mean and all about Dean,\u2019\u201d says Kalyn. \u201cShe just loved Dean. What a privilege it is to step into those shoes. Not only do I get to fulfill [the role of Dean] for the fans, but more importantly for my fianc\u00e9e.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThankfully, she told Kalyn he nailed his portrayal of her favorite character. \u201cOnly approval I needed,\u201d he says. Swoonworthy to say the least.<\/p>\n

\n\tKalyn clearly loves Dean. He can relate to the character in some ways \u2014 he tries to have fun; he loves hockey; and he has a bit of a goofy side \u2014 and can\u2019t relate in other ways. \u201cI\u2019m not as impulsive. I wouldn\u2019t say I\u2019m as confident. Also, I\u2019ve been in a relationship my whole life, so I don\u2019t know what it\u2019s like to be a bachelor and going out there and chasing lots of women,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019d say with me and Dean, it\u2019s very 50-50,\u201d Kalyn sats. \u201cWe\u2019re similar in ways, but we\u2019re really not at all at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDean takes center ice in The Score<\/em>, the third book in the series, alongside his love interest Allie Hayes, portrayed by Mika Abdalla. Fans latched onto the pair immediately, it\u2019s no surprised they\u2019ve been tapped to lead the second season. The pair knew from the beginning that they\u2019d be leading season two, but their story became a big part of season one as way into the next installment. <\/p>\n

\n\tKalyn and Abdalla worked to get that chemistry early on. \u201cLouisa had a great idea to suggest that her and I should go out for a dinner,\u201d he says. Instead, the pair opted to have Kalyn join Abdalla at a Pilates class because the actor thought it would be funny and then they\u2019d go to dinner after. Unfortunately for Kalyn, that didn\u2019t go as planned.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was late to the pilates class, and they didn\u2019t let me in. Apparently when you\u2019re two minutes frickin\u2019 late, they won\u2019t let you into the Pilates class,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor recalls seeing Abdalla inside the class. \u201cI was like a worried mother watching her kid through the window and said \u2019hey.\u2019 She did the Mika roll her eyes and then grabbed her stuff and walked out,\u201d Kalyn says.<\/p>\n

\n\tKalyn apologized profusely. \u201cShe just went, \u2018Let\u2019s go.\u2019 I felt like a kid in trouble,\u201d he says, laughing about the incident. It ended up working out for the best. The pair went to eat across the street from the Pilates studio. He adds, \u201cWe ended up just talking for hours and getting to know each other. That was a very good start and warm up to the scenes that we had together this season.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Kalyn continues his Off Campus<\/em> journey, there are certain messages he hopes come through for viewers. As his costars and the show\u2019s creator have pointed out, Off Campus<\/em> aims to tackle toxic masculinity within this world. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI hope girlfriends will end up dragging their boyfriends to watch this show, especially if they\u2019re athletes, because I know a lot of men can be very guarded and protective of how they feel,\u201d Kalyn says. \u201cI hope that we can connect with the entire audience to show it\u2019s OK to feel how you feel. Don\u2019t be afraid to speak to somebody and lean on them, whether it\u2019s a partner, a friend, a family member.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe\u2019s taken that messaging to heart. \u201cA big takeaway that I\u2019ve also learned is to not be afraid to express those feelings,\u201d the actor says. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think the show has a lot of layers to it and a lot of emotions and feelings. It\u2019s a great game changer in the YA world of television, and that\u2019s what drew me immediately reading the scripts,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m tearing up reading some scenes between Hannah and Garrett. It\u2019s very special.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLooking ahead, Kalyn knows that Off Campus<\/em> is a great stepping stone and something he always saw for himself. Ryan Gosling is a reference point for the type of career he\u2019d like to have \u2014 varied. But for now, he\u2019s focused on season two, which is just about to start filming. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be very sweet and loving and heartbreaking,\u201d he says of what\u2019s to come. \u201cI only see great things.\u201d<\/p>\n
