He was 94. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=669\">Stan Lee Documentary \u2018The Final Chapter\u2019 Lands Distribution (Exclusive)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills, his son Anthony Storm told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA member of Lucille Ball\u2018s Desilu Workshop in the late 1950s, the native New Yorker and son of a vaudevillian learned a lot about filmmaking from Woody Allen \u2014 another stand-up turned director \u2014 when he worked alongside him on <em>Bananas<\/em> (1971) and <em>Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask<\/em> (1972).<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAllen also acted in those films, of course, and after a scene that included him was shot, \u201cthe cinematographer would say, \u2018Good for me, Woody,\u2019 and the sound man would say, \u2018Good for me,\u2019 but there was no director to say anything,\u201d Storm recalled in a 2008 conversation for the Television Academy Foundation website <em>The Interviews<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cSo [he and Allen] would make eye contact, and I\u2019d say, \u2018No, I think you should do it again, and maybe this time, try this or try that.\u2019 So I was unofficially directing him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm made his official directorial debut on a 1975 episode of <em>Rhoda<\/em>, starring Valerie Harper, and handed five other installments during the CBS sitcom\u2019s second season. He also helmed eight episodes of another MTM Enterprises comedy, <em>Doc<\/em>, in 1975-76.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe then directed episodes of the ABC comedies <em>Laverne &amp; Shirley<\/em> (eight from 1976-78), <em>Mork &amp; Mindy<\/em> (59 from 1978-91, including the one-hour pilot) and the Donna Pescow-starring <em>Angie<\/em> (three in 1979, including the pilot) as part of a long association with writer-producer Garry Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm also directed the feature <em>Once Bitten<\/em> (1985), starring Lauren Hutton and, in his first lead role, Jim Carrey.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe third of three kids, Howard Sobel was born on the kitchen floor of an apartment on the Lower East Side on Dec. 11, 1931. His father, Jack, worked in vaudeville and burlesque \u2014 he was a member of \u201cThe Crazy Kids\u201d company that once featured Groucho Marx, Eddie Cantor, Georgie Jessel, Fanny Brice and Burt \u201cThe Mad Russian\u201d Gordon, whom he would replace.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI knew from the age of two that I wanted to be in show business,\u201d he said. \u201cMy other friends wanted to be policemen, firemen, gangsters, and they all succeeded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWith Lou Alexander, a friend from Edison High School in Miami, he launched a comedy act called Storm &amp; Gale, and they did burlesque sketches in the Catskills and in clubs in Boston and Key West, Florida. When Alexander was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps, Howie Storm went out on his own.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn 1959, he signed a contract with the Desilu Workshop, which Ball had launched a year earlier as a training ground for young actors who would appear in her projects. Also in the troupe at the time: his future first wife, singer Marilyn Lovell, and future <em>THR<\/em> columnist and TCM host Robert Osborne.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cLucy didn\u2019t like me,\u201d Storm told Kliph Nesteroff in a 2013 interview. \u201cShe kept using the other actors in comedy sketches. I kept saying, \u2018Lucy! I\u2019m a comedian! Why aren\u2019t you putting me in any of the comedy sketches?\u2019 She said, \u2018Don\u2019t be an ingrate.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cShe was very strange. I loved Desi [Arnaz], but Lucy I found difficult. She would come up to direct you and she would want you to be like Lucy. I said to her, \u2018Lucy, that\u2019s what you do. I don\u2019t do that.\u2019 Anyway, that was Desilu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAfter appearing on a 1960 episode of the ABC-Desilu series <em>The Untouchables<\/em>, Storm honed his stand-up act at The Duplex in Greenwich Village and was signed by Jack Rollins and Charles Joffe, who were managing Allen, Dick Cavett and Mike Nichols &amp; Elaine May at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=667\">\u2018Chess\u2019 Sets Broadway Closing Date in June<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tSoon, he was performing in such top-notch nightclubs as Mister Kelly\u2019s in Chicago, the hungry i in San Francisco and the Copacabana in New York and sitting on the couch next to Johnny Carson on <em>The Tonight Show<\/em>. Sometimes, singer Andy Williams was his opening act. He also appeared often \u2014 and sometimes with his dad \u2014 on <em>The Merv Griffin Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm, who had a small role in Allen\u2019s <em>Take the Money and Run<\/em> (1969), said he never thought about directing until <em>Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex. <\/em>He served as a stand-in for Allen on the movie while keeping track of every shot and every lens that was used.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI had to make a decision [about directing] because I felt my career as a comic would not go very far,\u201d he said. \u201cI thought I would be an opening act for a singer for the rest of my life, and that\u2019s not what I wanted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm directed a production of Terrence McNally\u2018s <em>Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone?<\/em> that was seen by <em>Rhoda<\/em> co-creator Allan Burns, who then hired him for <em>Rhoda<\/em> when regular director Robert Moore exited to helm <em>Murder by Death<\/em> (1976).<\/p>\n<p>\n\t(It also helped that Storm had known Harper from their days in the improv group The Committee and <em>Rhoda<\/em> producer David Davis from when their kids were in a playgroup together.)<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm would also direct Harper during the first two seasons of NBC\u2019s <em>Valerie<\/em> (before she was fired in a contract dispute) and on <em>City<\/em>, a midseason CBS series that aired just 13 episodes in 1990. He said he and the actress became pals after he pointed out that she was doing a Brooklyn Italian accent, not a Brooklyn Jewish one.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm knew after the second or third day on <em>Mork &amp; Mindy<\/em> that Robin Williams \u201cwas a genius,\u201d he said. \u201cThe trick I found with him was you could not sit on him, you could not stop him, you had to let him rehearse and do everything he wanted to do and get it out of his system. Then you could start to peel away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm left <em>Mork &amp; Mindy<\/em> after three years to work on <em>Taxi<\/em>, an experience he found unpleasant. He also directed for <em>Fernwood Tonight<\/em>, <em>Fish<\/em>, <em>Too Close for Comfort<\/em>, <em>Joanie Loves Chachi<\/em>, <em>Gimme a Break!<\/em>, <em>Amanda\u2019s<\/em>, <em>Brothers<\/em>, <em>Faerie Tale Theatre<\/em>, <em>The Redd Foxx Show<\/em>, <em>Perfect Strangers<\/em>, <em>Full House<\/em>, <em>Good Grief!<\/em>, <em>Head of the Class<\/em>, <em>Daddy Dearest<\/em>, <em>Everybody Loves Raymond<\/em> and <em>Kenan &amp; Kel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWith writing partner Paul Lichtman, Storm wrote episodes of <em>All in the Family<\/em> (\u201cArchie Feels Left Out\u201d), <em>The Bob Newhart Show<\/em>, <em>The Partridge Family<\/em> and <em>Happy Days<\/em> and acted on <em>That Girl<\/em>, <em>The New Dick Van Dyke Show<\/em>, <em>Chico and the Man<\/em>, <em>Steelyard Blues<\/em> (1973), <em>Tunnel Vision<\/em> (1976), <em>American Hot Wax<\/em> (1978), <em>Broadway Danny Rose<\/em> (1984) and <em>Valentine\u2019s Day<\/em> (2010).<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAfter actor Dick Yarmy was diagnosed with lung cancer, Storm and comics including Louis Nye, Tom Poston, Howard Morris, Ronnie Schell, Harvey Korman, Hank Bradford and Bill Dana took him out for dinner every week to make him laugh. They called their group \u201cYarmy\u2019s Army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tYarmy died in May 1992, but \u201cYarmy\u2019s Army,\u201d with members coming and going, kept meeting and supporting other struggling actors and comics for years. Most recently, they had a table at Factor\u2019s Famous Deli on Pico Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStorm, who taught improv and managed boxers, published a memoir, <em>The (Im)Perfect Storm. From Henry Street to Hollywood<\/em>, in 2019. He also served on many DGA negotiating committees and was chairman of the DGA Awards from 1996-2012.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn addition to Anthony, survivors include another son, Casey; his daughter-in-law, Julia; and his grandsons, Leo and Sidney. His wife, Patricia Ridgely, a contributing editor at <em>Town &amp; Country<\/em>, died in January.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cDirecting <em>Mork &amp; Mindy<\/em> was the most exciting time of my career, [but] I\u2019m shocked with all the things I did. It just happened,\u201d he said in his TV Academy Foundation chat. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t like I\u2019ll do this and then this and then this.
