They are the protagonists of <em>I Plant My Hand in the Garden<\/em> from co-writers and co-directors who share \u2013\u00a0no coincidence, you\u2019ll see! \u2013 their first names: Hoda Taheri and Boris Had\u017eija. The film, marking the debut feature-length movie for the duo, will get its\u00a0world premiere in the competition of Venice Days, or Giornate degli Autori, the independent section within the Venice Film Festival promoted by the Italian filmmaker associations Anac and 100autori. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cTogether, they decide to marry and raise the child, imagining a future built on their own terms,\u201d reads a synopsis for <em>I Plant My Hand in the Garden<\/em>. \u201cAs they prepare for the wedding and enter more deeply into each other\u2019s worlds, their relationship is unsettled by bureaucracy, family expectations and histories neither of them can leave behind. Surrounded by relatives, memories and inherited ideas of love and parenthood, Hoda and Boris begin to question the roles they are about to take on. What starts as a plan to become a family gradually opens into a more intimate and uncertain question: can they reinvent what it means to be a couple without losing what brought them together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTaheri and Had\u017eija star in the movie, along with Branka Had\u017eija, Jahandokht Taheri and Hadi Khanjanpour. The filmmaking duo previously worked together on\u00a0the short film trilogy\u00a0<em>Mother Prays All Day Long<\/em>\u00a0(2022),\u00a0<em>As If Mother Cried That Night<\/em>(2023), and\u00a0<em>Mother Is a Natural Sinner<\/em>\u00a0(2024), which all premiered at the Locarno Film Festival. Their short\u00a0<em>Yugotransport \u2013 We Are All on the Same Bus<\/em>\u00a0(2023) premiered at Rotterdam.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201c<em>I Plant My Hand in the Garden<\/em> grows out of the same questions that have shaped our earlier films: how identity, family and belonging are formed, contested and reinvented,\u201d Taheri and Had\u017eija share about their new film. \u201cBy placing a queer Serbian man and an Iranian refugee with a German passport at the center of a fictional marriage, we explore how institutions, such as marriage, nationality and gender, assign roles that feel both real and constructed. Casting members of our own families intensifies this tension, blurring the line between autobiography and invention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThey conclude: \u201cWe are less interested in defining what a \u2018real\u2019 family or relationship is than in asking what might emerge when we step outside inherited forms. The title suggests claiming ground, but for us, planting a hand is about testing whether something unfamiliar can take root at all.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><em>I Plant My Hand in the Garden<\/em>\u00a0is produced by\u00a0Maximilian Feldkamp for\u00a0DFFB\u00a0in Germany, with co-production by Taheri and Had\u017eija\u2019s Cruising in Germany, \u010carna Vu\u010dini\u0107 and Ena Bajraktarevi\u0107 for\u00a0Naked\u00a0in Serbia, and Tyler Hill for Mala Productions LLC in the U.S.\u00a0Square Eyes\u00a0is handling world sales.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>THR<\/em> can exclusively premiere a trailer for the movie.
