\n\tShelley Fabares, the wholesome daughter on\u00a0The Donna Reed Show\u00a0<\/em>who went on to star opposite Elvis Presley in three movies and as Craig T. Nelson\u2019s independent wife on\u00a0Coach<\/em>, has died. She was 82.<\/p>\n

\n\tFabares died Saturday in Los Angeles, her family announced. Survivors include her husband, M*A*S*H\u00a0<\/em>actor Mike Farrell, whom she married in 1984.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort,\u201d they said in a statement. \u201cShe was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued and cared for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the original\u00a0One Day at a Time<\/em>, Fabares played against her prim, good-girl persona as Francine Webster, a nasty business rival of Bonnie Franklin\u2018s Ann Romano. (Her late aunt,\u00a0Caesar\u2019s Hour\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Band Wagon\u00a0<\/em>star Nannette Fabray, also appeared on the sitcom, playing the mother of Franklin\u2019s character.)<\/p>\n

\n\tFabares also portrayed the wife of doomed Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo (James Caan) on the landmark 1971 ABC telefilm\u00a0Brian\u2019s Song<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn\u00a0The Donna Reed Show<\/em>, which aired on ABC for eight seasons, from September 1958 through March 1966, Fabares played high schooler Mary Stone opposite Reed as her mom, housewife Donna Stone; Carl Betz as her pediatrician dad, Dr. Alex Stone; and Paul Petersen as her younger brother, Jeff.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Mary left for college at the start of the sixth season, the Stones adopted a daughter, Trisha (Patty Petersen, real-life sister of Paul).<\/p>\n

\n\tCapitalizing on her national fame, Fabares \u2014 backed by Darlene Love and the Blossoms and Glen Campbell on guitar \u2014 recorded a version of \u201cJohnny Angel,\u201d which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1962. She had debuted the song on a\u00a0Donna Reed<\/em>\u00a0episode a couple months earlier.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI literally cannot sing. So there\u2019s a lot of overdubbing,\u201d she admitted in a 1983 interview. \u201cThe girls in the back \u2014 \u2018Could you sing a little louder please?\u2019 It was unusual. But [The Donna Reed Show<\/em>] was very successful at that time, so [the song] had a built-in audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring \u201clive\u201d performances \u2014 in \u201cthe days when they would play the record and you would lip-sync\u201d \u2014 she recalled, \u201cmy worst experience was [when] I did a live local television show and, needless to say, the record stuck. I think I went into a coma.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFabares starred on the ABC comedy\u00a0Coach\u00a0<\/em>for eight seasons while earning a pair of Emmy nominations for playing Christine Armstrong, a TV newscaster and the girlfriend and then wife of Nelson\u2019s college football coach, Hayden Fox.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cClearly, Christine is a very successful woman and firmly entrenched in her career and loves her work. And she loves this man,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a difficult problem in life to find your balance. We\u2019re all going through the same things. I have a wonderful relationship with my husband, but I\u2019m still a career woman.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2015, NBC developed a\u00a0Coach\u00a0<\/em>revival in which Nelson\u2019s character returns to coaching and Fabares\u2019 character is killed off, but the reboot did not emerge beyond the pilot stage.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichele Ann Marie Fabares was born in Santa Monica on Jan. 19, 1944. Her mother, Elsa, got her into modeling at age 3, and that led to TV appearances.<\/p>\n

\n\tBy the time she was 9, Frank Sinatra was singing \u201cYoung at Heart\u201d to her on an NBC special. She also appeared on a 1955 NBC adaptation of\u00a0Our Town\u00a0<\/em>that starred Sinatra, Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint and with Rock Hudson in\u00a0Never Say Goodbye\u00a0<\/em>(1956).<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1958, she was on the ABC series\u00a0Annette<\/em>, which starred lifelong friend Annette Funicello.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFabares said Reed \u201cwas not given credit for being the head of her own series, the guiding force behind the series,\u201d she said in 1994. \u201cShe produced the series, had an enormous part in writing it and also had four children at home. Having been there, I knew the amazing strength of that woman.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a 2011 reunion of the show\u2019s surviving castmembers, Fabares remembered when she was feeling nervous about having to dance during a scene. Reed tried to calm her down. \u201cShelley, there are three things I can\u2019t do: I can\u2019t swim, I can\u2019t dance, and I can\u2019t act.\u201d But she had to do all three for a film scene. \u201cOh yeah, that movie I was talking about was\u00a0It\u2019s a Wonderful Life<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter several years as Mary Stone, Fabares concentrated on the big screen and appeared in the fun-in-the-sun movies\u00a0Ride the Wild Surf\u00a0<\/em>(1964) with Fabian and\u00a0Hold On!\u00a0<\/em>(1966) with Peter Noone of Herman\u2019s Hermits.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe then co-starred with Presley in\u00a0Girl Happy\u00a0<\/em>(1965),\u00a0Spinout\u00a0<\/em>(1966) \u2014\u00a0Betz played her dad in that one too \u2014 and\u00a0Clambake\u00a0<\/em>(1967).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe first day of shooting [Girl Happy<\/em>], I\u2019m on the set. Something was happening, and I didn\u2019t know what it was,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I looked over, and it was Elvis. He was walking in. He wasn\u2019t doing anything. He was just walking in. The presence that this man had \u2026 you couldn\u2019t talk. Nobody did anything. You just sort of stopped. And I remember thinking, \u2018Oh, my God. It\u2019s Elvis Presley. I\u2019m never going to be able to open my mouth around him.\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the late 1960s, during a time of protest and rebellion, her good-girl appeal fell out of sync with the cultural zeitgeist. It wasn\u2019t until\u00a0Brian\u2019s Song\u00a0<\/em>that she regained her career momentum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBuoyed by that role, Fabares rebounded to work on such popular series as\u00a0The Brian Keith Show<\/em>,\u00a0The Practice\u00a0<\/em>with Danny Thomas and\u00a0Highcliffe Manor<\/em>. In the late \u201970s and early \u201980s, she starred on\u00a0One Day at a Time<\/em>, then showed a saucier dimension as the tart-tongued Eleanor Major on the syndicated soap opera spoof\u00a0Forever Fernwood<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFabares also had guest-starring roles on\u00a0Mannix<\/em>;\u00a0Love, American Style<\/em>;\u00a0Daniel Boone<\/em>;\u00a0McCloud<\/em>;\u00a0Mork & Mindy<\/em>; and\u00a0Hello, Larry <\/em>(as McLean Stevenson\u2019s ex-wife).<\/p>\n

\n\tShe had a liver transplant in October 2000 after spending nearly two years on the waiting list to receive one.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1984, she married Farrell at Aunt Nanette\u2019s Pacific Palisades home. The two had first met in 1970 when she was a guest star on Farrell\u2019s series\u00a0The Interns<\/em>, but it was not until they reunited 12 years later during a CBS press tour that they started to date. (Earlier, Fabares had been married to record producer Lou Adler.)<\/p>\n

\n\tFarrell, known to be a serious human rights activist, said his wife made him a bit more light-hearted. \u201cPeople talk about how much more fun I am,\u201d he said in 1991. \u201cShelley has allowed people to understand I\u2019m not this unapproachable doomsayer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAdded Fabares: \u201cNothing in Mike\u2019s life is casual. He\u2019s very serious. Mike grounds me, and I think I pull him out sometimes. It\u2019s a nice mix.\u201d<\/p>\n
