The one-night event, with showtimes at 6:30 p.m., spans six formats \u2014 Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX, Barco HDR, D-Box and Dolby Atmos \u2014 at theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas and elsewhere. The launch strategy is reminiscent of Neon\u2019s rollout last year of Osgood Perkins\u2019 <em>The Monkey<\/em>, which used advance premium-format screenings to build word of mouth on the way to the film\u2019s strong $40 million theatrical performance.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOne of the buzziest films to emerge from this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival, <em>Hop<\/em>e\u2019s visceral spectacle certainly seems to warrant the premium-format splash.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDescribing the film as \u201ca superbly sustained pedal-to-the-metal experience that\u2019s almost dizzying in its bravura,\u201d <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2018s chief film critic hailed <em>Hope<\/em> as a \u201crip-roaring sci-fi creature feature\u201d that \u201chas instant cult classic written all over it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSet in the fictional border town of Hope Harbor near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the film follows put-upon police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and his bad-ass female deputy Sung-ae (<em>Squid Game<\/em>\u2018s Hoyeon) as they frantically hunt an enormous mystery creature that has begun rampaging through their village. A band of local hunters, led by the charismatic Sung-ki (Zo In-sung), joins the chase and tracks the beast into a nearby forest \u2014 only to become its prey. The writer-director has become a favorite of both arthouse fans and action aficionados thanks to his trio of stunning genre movies, the brutal crime thrillers\u00a0<em>The Chaser\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Yellow Sea<\/em>\u00a0and the 2016 horror sensation\u00a0<em>The Wailing<\/em>. He reunites here to stunning effect with his\u00a0<em>Wailing<\/em>\u00a0cinematographer, Hong Kyung-pyo, a revered figure in the Korean industry whose other credits include Bong Joon Ho\u2019s\u00a0<em>Parasite<\/em>\u00a0and Lee Chang-dong\u2019s\u00a0<em>Burning<\/em>. <em>Hope<\/em>\u2018s score is by Michael Abels, the composer behind Jordan Peele\u2019s\u00a0<em>Get Out<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Nope<\/em>. The film\u2019s Korean ensemble is rounded out by surprising supporting characters played by Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Hope<\/em> opened at home in South Korea on July 15 and has earned $35 million, becoming the country\u2019s third-biggest domestic release this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNa conceived\u00a0<em>Hope<\/em>\u00a0as the first chapter of a potential franchise \u2014 and, so far,\u00a0international\u00a0distributors appear on board.
