\n\tA shock Lakers sale is reopening an internal schism within the family that had controlled the NBA franchise for 46 years.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a letter on Monday, Jeanie Buss\u2019 attorney accused ESPN\u2019s star NBA reporter Shams Charania of being the recipient of a \u201cfalse\u201d leak from Buss siblings Joey and Jesse. In a report attributed to sources, Charania wrote that the trust of six siblings had voted to relinquish its 17.8 percent stake in the franchise. That would wind down the family\u2019s involvement in the team, marking a significant move for a clan whose patriarch, Dr. Jerry Buss, made the Lakers synonymous with the word \u201cShowtime\u201d in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\n\tNot so fast, says Buss\u2019 daughter. \u201cShams Charania of ESPN falsely reported that the six Buss siblings voted to sell the 17.8% ownership stake in the Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, and that my client, Jeanie Buss, is \u2018out\u2019 as controlling owner. This is just the latest instance of a years-long pattern whereby Joey and Jesse Buss leak false, defamatory and pernicious \u2018information\u2019 to Mr. Charania for the malicious purpose of doing harm to the Los Angeles Lakers so long as Dr. Buss\u2019s chosen successor, Jeanie Buss, carries out her father\u2019s wishes,\u201d Jeanie\u2019s attorney Adam Streisand wrote in a letter.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Aug. 12, Lakers owner Mark Walter, who purchased the team in a deal that closed last October, revealed that he inked an agreement to suddenly sell the franchise to a group led by Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger, with a reported valuation of $12.5 billion. The 41-year-old Kushner, who leads venture capital firm Thrive Capital, would be controlling owner in his personal capacity if the multibillion-dollar deal gets the seal of approval from the NBA\u2019s board of governors. Former Disney CEO Iger, who works at Thrive now, is expected to have a significant operational role at the franchise after the deal closes.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Walter acquired the team he agreed to keep Jeanie as the Lakers\u2019 \u201cgovernor\u201d for five years, after which he would have an option to buy out the family stake. Even if Jeanie succeeds in blocking her family\u2019s stake in the franchise from being sold, that wouldn\u2019t impact the sale that Walter orchestrated to Iger and Kushner. But it would impact how involved Jeanie is in the franchise going forward over the next several years.<\/p>\n

\n\tJeanie\u2019s attorney Streisand points to a court order in 2017 that states that she stay as controlling owner of the Lakers throughout her lifetime absent a further order modifying the trust. In writing to her siblings\u2019 attorneys, Steisand wrote: \u201cOn behalf of Jeanie Buss, I demand that your clients make clear publicly that Jeanie Buss is the Controlling Owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and that your clients shall take no action on this supposed \u201cvote\u201d to sell the 17.8% stake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat sentiment runs contrary to what the Buss siblings told ESPN hours ago in a family statement. \u201cWe have decided as a family to sell the remaining Buss Family Trust shares to the Bob Iger group as part of the ongoing transaction,\u201d read that unsigned statement. \u201cWe love the Lakers, Laker fans and will continue to support Los Angeles; but it is time to use this opportunity to move on and exit gracefully while we still can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSince Jerry Buss\u2019 death in 2013, his family had struggled for control over the franchise, with Jeanie at odds with brothers, including Jim Buss, over the direction of the team and who was setting that direction. There have been board fights and legal battles to determine which of Jerry\u2019s heirs would take the lead, with various siblings holding the upper hand at certain points. Jeanie had emerged victorious in recent years, ahead of the sale to Dodgers owner Walter. (The family drama was used as inspiration for Netflix sports comedy series Running Point<\/em>, which stars Kate Hudson as a fictionalized version of Jeanie Buss, who must contend with her siblings while running L.A.\u2019s basketball team. Jeanie also served as an EP on the series.)<\/p>\n
