\nHeated Rivalry<\/em> producers Jacob Tierney and Brendan Brady say the queer hockey drama\u2019s second season will lean on feeling over plot twists \u2014 and that fans already have most of the answers.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe producers behind HBO Max and Crave\u2019s breakout queer romance Heated Rivalry<\/em> are staying coy on specifics for season two \u2014 but not because there\u2019s much left to hide.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s so funny about the level of secrecy is like there\u2019s a book \u2014 you can just look at it,\u201d creator, writer and director Jacob Tierney said of the Rachel Reid novels, the Game Changers series, the show is adapted from. \u201cIt\u2019ll tell you honestly, 90 percent of what you\u2019d like to know is in that book.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeason one of the series drew primarily from Heated Rivalry<\/em>, Reid\u2019s second Game Changers novel, which introduced the story of Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov\u2019s (Connor Storrie), two on-ice rivals who develop a passionate, secret, long-term romantic relationship. Tierney also folded in elements and characters from the series\u2019 first book, which centers on Scott Hunter (played by Fran\u00e7ois Arnaud) and Kip Grady (played by actor Robbie G.K.).<\/p>\n

\n\tFor season two, Tierney has said the show will continue Shane and Ilya\u2019s story, drawing primarily from Reid\u2019s sixth book, The Long Game<\/em>, which finds the pair now in a committed relationship and learning to build a life together while still hiding their feelings from the public. Season two will also weave in the storylines from book five, Role Model<\/em>, whose plot runs concurrently with The Long Game<\/em>\u2018s timeline. Role Model<\/em> focuses on Troy, a professional hockey player who is traded to the Ottawa Centaurs in Reid\u2019s source material, and Harris, the team\u2019s social media manager. It was announced earlier this month that Charlie Gillespie has been cast as Troy, with Justice Smith to play Harris.<\/p>\n

\n\tTierney was careful to note that even with two books\u2019 worth of story now in play, the show isn\u2019t built to withhold plot from its audience. \u201cThis is not the usual suspects. Like, we\u2019re not trying to hide a villain from you\u2026 there are books, read them, and then make two guesses, three guesses, and I bet two of them will be right,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really this show is not built on secrets. It\u2019s built on feelings and sensation. It\u2019s a very visceral show. It\u2019s very sensual in that way, and it\u2019s all in the execution of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTierney is sharing writing duties on season two with Mike Goldbach \u2014 whose credits include Mayfair Witches<\/em> and On Becoming a God in Central Florida<\/em> \u2014 as co-writer. \u201cMike is such a good writer, and he\u2019s been so amazingly helpful to me,\u201d Tierney said, \u201cWe\u2019re very happy with where we\u2019re at with the scripts. We\u2019re really happy with this cast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe noted that, as with the casting of Williams and Storrie, the new additions were cast \u201cto make sure that we\u2019re putting couples together that we think are going to just shine on the screen.\u201d Some fans of the books have pushed back on the casting, arguing it departs from Reid\u2019s description of Harris as stockier and less conventionally athletic-looking than his book counterpart. Reid has pushed back on this, posting on Instagram: \u201cThinking about all the people last summer who told me the casting for Ilya and Shane was wrong and bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe show also announced other key season two castings to expand the Ottawa Centaurs roster. Emily Hampshire and Priyanka were also cast in two roles which originate from Reid\u2019s third novel, Tough Guy<\/em>, which suggests, as many suspected, Tierney\u2019s plans to incorporate the other novels in the Game Changers series. But so far, there\u2019s been no announcement on casting for that book\u2019s lead couple: hockey enforcer Ryan Price and aspiring singer (and hockey hater) Fabian.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere has been no mention yet of adding characters or plot lines from Common Goal<\/em>, Reid\u2019s fourth novel in the series. But Kyle Swift, one half of that book\u2019s leading couple, made a brief appearance in the first season of Heated Rivalry<\/em>, played by Matthew Finlan.<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked what he\u2019s most looking forward to going into the new season, Tierney pointed to trusting his own instincts amid a much bigger spotlight than season one drew. \u201cI\u2019ve never experienced fandom like this before, and I have to just trust myself the way I trusted myself last time,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m gonna try to make the best show I can make \u2014 that\u2019s really all I can do. I can never make everybody happy at the same time. I hope I can make a majority of you happy, and I hope you also just cut me the slack to wait and see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeason two of Heated Rivalry<\/em> began shooting this year and is aiming for a spring 2027 release on Crave and HBO Max.<\/p>\n
