\n\tThe Television Academy welcomed seven new members into its Hall of Fame Thursday night, honoring a class that has spent decades defining television across comedy, drama, documentary, journalism and entertainment. <\/p>\n

\n\tActors Ted Danson and Jean Smart, South Park<\/em> creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, documentary pioneer Sheila Nevins and the late broadcast journalist Ed Bradley made up the 2026 class, bringing together careers that have transformed television. <\/p>\n

\n\tFor Parker and Stone, the honor arrived on a fitting anniversary. South Park<\/em> premiered exactly 29 years earlier, on Aug. 13, 1997. Since its debut, the Comedy Central juggernaut has become one of television\u2019s longest-running animated series, earning five Emmys while establishing Parker and Stone as two of the most fearless satirists. The pair, who also created the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon<\/em>, have served as writers, producers, directors and lead voice actors on the series. <\/p>\n

\n\tStone credited the show\u2019s longevity in part to deadlines. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t get anything done without a deadline,\u201d he said. Meanwhile, Parker joked that he turned to AI for help with his acceptance speech. \u201cNo matter how hard I tried, ChatGPT just couldn\u2019t seem to get it right,\u201d he said before launching into a bit built around an AI generated speech. He ended on a more earnest note about the show\u2019s commitment to skewering all sides. \u201cWe can\u2019t stop laughing at ourselves, at each other,\u201d Parker said, \u201cbecause when any one group starts taking itself too seriously, really, really bad shit happens.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSmart\u2019s induction honored one of television\u2019s most versatile performers. She first broke through as Charlene Frazier on the 80\u2019s sitcom Designing Women<\/em> before moving between comedy and drama in Frasier<\/em>, 24,<\/em> Samantha Who?<\/em>, Fargo<\/em>, Watchmen<\/em> and Mare of Easttown<\/em>. Her career has found another act in HBO\u2019s Hacks<\/em>, where her performance as veteran comedian Deborah Vance has earned her multiple Emmy wins. <\/p>\n

\n\tCalling the induction \u201can amazing and truly unexpected honor,\u201d Smart said being included among her fellow inductees was \u201ca gift of a lifetime.\u201d She also poked fun at her relationship with celebrity, recalling a recent elevator encounter in which a stranger asked, \u201cAre you famous?\u201d \u201cWell, apparently not,\u201d Smart recalled as the room burst into laughter. <\/p>\n

\n\tOne of the evening\u2019s most poignant tributes belonged to Bradley, the groundbreaking CBS News journalist who died in 2006 after 25 years at 60 Minutes<\/em> and reporting on more than 500 stories. Fellow correspondent Lesley Stahl remembered her longtime colleague as a journalist who always \u201csearched for the human story\u201d and cared deeply about people without power. Bradley\u2019s widow, Patricia Blanchet, accepted the honor and reflected on his significance as one of the few Black journalists of his era with such broad national visibility. Bradley\u2019s refusal to be defined solely by race or restricted to the \u201crace beat,\u201d she said, \u201cwas and remains a radical act.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tBlanchet also invoked her husband\u2019s legacy while addressing current threats to journalism. \u201cLet us pick up Ed\u2019s baton and speak truth to power,\u201d she urged. \u201cLet us walk his walk and better safeguard all that is at risk that we hold so dear in our sacred democracy.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tNevins, who could not attend after contracting COVID and pneumonia, delivered a taped acceptance speech. Actress and longtime friend Lily Tomlin introduced the longtime HBO documentary president, crediting her with making documentaries \u201cmust-see TV\u201d and championing filmmakers who tackled subjects others avoided. <\/p>\n

\n\tJerry Seinfeld inducted Sarandos with a speech that doubled as a tribute to the Netflix co-CEO and a not-so-subtle campaign for his own Hall of Fame induction. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to believe that I am not the one receiving this very special honor tonight,\u201d Seinfeld joked, before comparing their r\u00e9sum\u00e9s for the benefit of the Hall of Fame nominating committee. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTo give you some idea how fond I am of Ted, I flew from New York to do this, the longest flight I have ever done for a two-minute non-paying gig in my 50-year comedy career,\u201d he said, before going on to emphasize, \u201c50, Academy, 50!\u201d But beneath the humor was genuine admiration for the executive whose tenure at Netflix helped transform Hollywood\u2019s traditional television model. <\/p>\n

\n\tUnder Sarandos\u2019 content leadership, the streamer moved aggressively into original programming with shows including House of Cards<\/em>, Orange is the New Black<\/em>, The Crown <\/em>and Stranger Things<\/em>, while helping popularize binge-watching and the release of full seasons at once. \u201cTo a lot of us in the industry, it\u2019s not Netflix, it\u2019s Tedflix,\u201d Seinfeld said, calling Sarandos \u201cnot only the most respected, but also the most loved industry executive I have ever seen in my career.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tIn his speech, Sarandos reflected on Netflix\u2019s impact on the industry, tracing his instincts back to his teenage years working in a video store and discovering how much he enjoyed connecting audiences with stories. \u201cNetflix put audiences in control and let you watch anything anytime you wanted,\u201d Sarandos said. \u201cIt kind of changed the way we watch TV, but it also changed the way we create TV.\u201d But Sarandos argued that technology hasn\u2019t changed television\u2019s fundamental appeal. \u201cTelevision is the best way to tell great stories,\u201d he said. \u201cThe relationship we have with people on TV is intimate.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe final honor of the night went to Danson, whose induction capped a television career spanning more than four decades. His portrayal of Sam Malone on Cheers<\/em> made him a defining sitcom star of the 1980s and \u201990s, but he continued reinventing himself through Becker<\/em>, Damages<\/em>, CSI<\/em>, Fargo<\/em>, The Good Place <\/em>and, most recently, Netflix\u2019s A Man on the Inside<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n\tIntroduced by his wife, Oscar-winning actress Mary Steenburgen, Danson recalled discovering acting while a college student at Stanford. \u201cThe light bulb had turned on,\u201d he said. \u201cI was an actor, and all of my life made sense all of a sudden.\u201d Decades later, his affection for television production and Hollywood appeared undiminished. \u201cThank you so much for everything we\u2019re all doing to make sure that Hollywood stays healthy and vital,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s magic. We shouldn\u2019t let our magic slide.\u201d<\/p>\n
