Vachon previously called the situation \u201ca tragedy\u201d and explained in an industry talk at Edinburgh how she and her long-time collaborator Haynes managed to rebuild the project after Phoenix\u2019s exit.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHost Wendy Mitchell joked: \u201cI actually like [Pascal] better than Joaquin Phoenix anyway,\u201d to which Vachon responded: \u201cI kind of do too!\u201d The tightly-packed crowd at Edinburgh\u2019s Central Hall laughed with them.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tVachon continued: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t an easy situation. And as I also stated, it was devastating that Todd didn\u2019t get to make a movie again that year. If you take the [\u2026] glass half-full version, and \u2018everything happens for a reason\u2019 [perspective], maybe the reason was that this was a role that Pedro was born to play. He is certainly extraordinary in the film, and by the way, so is Danny [Ramirez]. I mean, both of them are a revelation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGetting a \u201cdo-over\u201d allowed them to find a better shoot location, said Vachon, which showed her everything worked out for the best. Pascal was brought on board via her work with him on Celine Song\u2019s <em>Materialists<\/em>. \u201cPeople always say to me, \u2018Is he as nice as he seems?\u2019 [\u2026] He is. People are so invested. They love him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs a titan of independent film production, Vachon \u2014\u00a0in Edinburgh with her latest film <em>Pretty Babies<\/em>, directed by Tyler-Marie Evans, who spoke to <em>THR <\/em>in depth about winning over Vachon just this week \u2014\u00a0was also probed on the box office success of <em>Obsession <\/em>and <em>Backrooms <\/em>this year, two movies that have challenged the status quo in Hollywood. \u201cI do,\u201d she said when asked if she likes the energy coming out of YouTube. \u201cBut when we were making movies like <em>Poison<\/em> [and] <em>Go Fish<\/em>, we also identified an audience\u2026 Back in those days, the LGBTQ audience could go to bars. There were parts of town [where you] could take your leaflets and just go specific places where people gathered and say, \u2018Look! We made this! She cannot deny, however, that \u201cwe\u2019re at a time of great disruption,\u201d and the queer film landscape is a little rocky with so much division in the U.S. at the moment. \u201cIt\u2019s a conundrum right now. We have something like <em>Heated Rivalry <\/em>which couldn\u2019t be a bigger hit, and we still have politicians campaigning on who gets to use what bathroom. And it\u2019s happening [in the U.K.] too. It\u2019s not like we have the monopoly on [marginalizing] LGBTQ people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI remember when I would go see screenings of <em>Poison <\/em>or <em>Swoon<\/em>, which were boy queer [films] and [the theater] would be filled with lesbians because they were like, \u2018I guess I\u2019ll go see this.\u2019 But now there is more choice,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd the power of narrative to actually change people\u2019s perspectives is stronger than it\u2019s ever been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOn the toss-up of a box office hit or flop, Vachon confessed she can\u2019t predict the commercial outcome of her movies. She\u2019s actually pleased streaming services can get movies to wider audiences nowadays. \u201cWhen Todd Haynes\u2019 <em>Safe<\/em> came out, it didn\u2019t do anything at the box office. People weren\u2019t interested in seeing it. The reviews were a little head-scratchy, like, \u2018Not quite sure what he was going for here.\u2019 But in the mid-late \u201990s, I can\u2019t remember exactly when, a newspaper [called] the Village Voice, which was incredibly influential at the time, did a survey of every single movie critic in America. What was the best movie in the \u201990s? <em>Safe <\/em>was number one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cSometimes the answer is that people just didn\u2019t want to see it. They just didn\u2019t, and you can\u2019t really put your finger on why it didn\u2019t hit the zeitgeist in that way. Who knows why? It was either too late or too soon. And now, the good thing in my mind [is] we have access to things and [movies] can find their way later.
