L\u00e9a Seydoux Embraced the Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nEric Goode, the filmmaker behind both, as well as <em>Chimp Crazy<\/em> (he\u2019s also a very successful hotelier), grew up obsessing over reptiles, much like the other characters in his new HBO series. He drew the line at smuggling, whereas his human subjects in <em>Monsters of God<\/em> did not. That makes them (and possibly you, too) the monsters.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe title of the Goode Films\/A24 series (in association with Central Pictures) \u201creally refers to the people, not the reptiles,\u201d Goode told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> on a Zoom call ahead of Thursday\u2019s premiere. \u201cWe\u2019re monsters of God, and we always separate ourselves from the animal kingdom through religion \u2014 where we say humans have dominion over all life whether it swims, crawls or flies, and all of life is sort of meant for us to do what we want with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIf you love animals and nature, as Goode truly does, human beings are the most dangerous animal on Earth. But this writer is not the only one who missed the quiet-yet-powerful intent.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cA lot of people in the reptile world are confused by the title and are thinking, \u2018We\u2019re vilifying the reptiles by calling them monsters,&#8217;\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGoode borrowed from author David Quammen\u2019s book <em>Monster of God<\/em>, which focuses on four apex predators: lions, tigers, crocodiles and bears. It wasn\u2019t exactly the heist of the century \u2014 Goode and Quammen sit together on the board of directors for an organization called Rainforest Trust, so Quammen\u2019s permission was granted.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNear the very end of the series, which won the TV Premiere Audience Award at the 2026 SXSW Film &amp; TV Festival, one of its participants\/villains, Tommy Crutchfield, serendipitously refers to the serpents as \u201cthese Monsters of God.\u201d Goode says he didn\u2019t purposely plant the phrase for Crutchfield, but acknowledges that they have filmed together so much over the past decade and a half that he \u201cmay have said it at some point.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI remember in real time, when he said it, it almost drew tears in his eyes,\u201d Goode said of the reformed reptile trafficker.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tYes, Crutchfield used to really suck (not as much as fellow snakes Anson Wong or Mike Van Nostrand, but more so than Hank Molt \u2014 all are in the docuseries). He\u2019s sorry about all of that.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFellow <em>Monsters of God<\/em> executive producer Jeremy McBride (Josh Safdie is among the dozen or so others) was just \u201calong for the ride with these eccentric, obsessive people,\u201d he tells <em>THR<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s a really fraught world with a lot of hypocrisy and a lot of unintended consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt is also filled with some of the prettiest creatures we haven\u2019t yet made extinct. Goode is partial to the big lizards: the \u201cmonitors, Komodo dragons, big iguanas,\u201d he says while wearing a hat dedicated to his love of tortoises (he\u2019d add them to his list). McBride\u2019s favorite is the Gila monster, one of the only venomous lizards in the world. They can clamp and bite you, and really significantly injure you. But the glands were extracted and used for this early development of GLP-1s,\u201d McBride said. \u201cSo this very thing that can kill you can also basically save your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe guys wanted to get that story into the series, they said, but it just didn\u2019t fit anywhere. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThough <em>Monsters of God<\/em> generally shorthands its featured creatures with \u201creptiles,\u201d it also includes amphibians, like frogs and gnarly toads \u2014 the bumpy kind that makes you run away from lawn-mowing duties in suburban New Jersey. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tGoode, in all his wisdom, thinks I should not be afraid of these monsters of Satan.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe reason you should not be afraid of frogs is there\u2019s never been an incident in the world where a frog has ever hurt a human being or killed a human being \u2014 other than a poison arrow frog, which are only in South America and Central America,\u201d Goode said, clearly lying to me. \u201cThey\u2019re tiny, and I don\u2019t even know if <em>they\u2019ve<\/em> killed anyone.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cA toad, on the other hand \u2014 yes, some toads have glands on the back of their head that people are using\u2026 to get high. All I would say is: Don\u2019t eat toads. Frogs you can eat. Frog legs are yummy. They eat them in France and they taste like chicken,\u201d he added. \u201cThere\u2019s very few cases of anyone dying from a amphibian. Much more people die from car accidents. You don\u2019t ever have to worry about a toad attacking you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThen you mow my lawn, Eric.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFinally, I asked Goode to rank his documentaries in terms of the subjects\u2019 damage to the natural world. I didn\u2019t get a ranking, but that does not mean Goode ducked the question.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cHonestly, I think it\u2019s difficult to rank them. It\u2019s all one big ball of wax, more interconnected than people realize. Joe Exotic didn\u2019t just have tigers; he had bears, primates, reptiles, birds \u2014 everything. It wasn\u2019t just chimps in Tonia\u2019s world either \u2014 she had otters, wallabies, etc.,\u201d he said. \u201c<em>Tiger King<\/em>, <em>Chimp Crazy<\/em>, <em>Monsters of God<\/em> \u2014 the labels make it look like separate animal worlds, but it\u2019s all interconnected, even if the motivations and interests behind each one differ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201c<em>Monsters of God<\/em> is about invisibility \u2014 a smuggling economy most people never see, doing damage to wild populations you can\u2019t even count,\u201d Goode continued. \u201cIf we\u2019re talking biggest offenders, none of my docs actually get there \u2014 that\u2019s bushmeat and wildlife consumption around the world, which dwarf all three films combined and feed right into the same system.
