\n\tComing off of the success of Corsage<\/em>, an irreverent take on the 19th-century costume drama, Marie Kreutzer found that few were even entertaining the pitch for her next movie. The film was Gentle Monster<\/em>, an examination of the wreckage brought upon a modern middle-class family after its patriarch, Philip, is accused of distributing and possessing child sex abuse material. \u201cI was aware that this was a tough subject, and obviously it was difficult every step of the way with financing,\u201d says the Austrian filmmaker. \u201cSome actors \u2014 most of them \u2014 just told me directly that it\u2019s too heavy material for them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThis was not true for Gentle Monster<\/em>\u2019s ultimate star, L\u00e9a Seydoux, who signed on without hesitation. She gives a stark, haunting performance as Philip\u2019s wife, Lucy, a highly regarded pianist who\u2019s left to question the entire foundation of her life and determine how to move forward. \u201cI think it\u2019s controversial, but also realistic,\u201d the actress says. \u201cIt was important to tell this story because it\u2019s reality. I had no problem with the subject matter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film premiered in Cannes to a warm reception, with Netflix acquiring North American rights \u2014 it\u2019ll hit theaters Oct. 30 before streaming beginning Nov. 18 \u2014 and the streamer is now planning a significant awards campaign for the fall, with high-profile festival stops slated in Toronto and more. It\u2019s a fittingly timed showcase for Seydoux, who has built her career on daring and provocative material, from her breakout in Blue Is the Warmest Color<\/em> to another fearless 2026 Cannes title, Arthur Harari\u2019s The Unknown<\/em>, which remains without U.S. distribution. \u201cI don\u2019t think that people loved it \u2014 [reception] was mixed,\u201d the French star admits of that polarizing body-swap drama. \u201cBut it\u2019s radical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn Gentle Monster<\/em>, Lucy and Philip move out of Munich to the countryside at the latter\u2019s request, for a change of pace. Then police promptly show up to their home and arrest Philip, leaving Lucy desperate for answers. She avoids her husband, instead turning to his case\u2019s level-headed investigator, Elsa (Jella Haase), while trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy for their son. Kreutzer\u2019s approach is disquieting in its intimacy, keeping agonizingly close to Lucy\u2019s real-time perspective. What did Philip actually do, and how accurate are the allegations? It\u2019s for Lucy to find out, and for us to watch her.<\/p>\n

\n\tLucy is eager for easy explanations; she wants to believe that she has not, in fact, married a monster \u2014 despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Her behavior is never simple or righteous. \u201cWhat was very important for me from the beginning was that this couple would feel like they could be my friends. I could feel close to them. I could identify with them \u2014 as opposed to the stereotypes we very often have in mind when it comes to pedocriminals and how they live and commit their crimes,\u201d Kreutzer says. \u201cThese perpetrators are everywhere. It\u2019s not just the creepy guy hiding behind the corner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeydoux embraced this grey area. \u201cYou are with Lucy, always with her, with all these different emotions that are contradictory,\u201d she says. \u201cI have a lot of empathy. I\u2019m extremely emotionally sensitive. It was natural. Some characters are more difficult to find, but Lucy was not that hard.\u201d Kreutzer was surprised by the emotion that the Paris-born Seydoux imbued into the role, which is mostly spoken in German: \u201cWhat I really loved about L\u00e9a is that she\u2019s unconventional herself \u2014 she\u2019s really a free spirit. She questioned a lot of things and we discussed a lot of things, but she never questioned Lucy\u2019s actions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWithin an hour of meeting with Seydoux, the director knew she\u2019d found her lead. Somehow, the actor already seemed to know Lucy inside and out, how to step into her shoes without fear or compromise. When it came to filming, Kreutzer avoided giving Seydoux specific directions, watching her absorb the material, even in takes that ranged wildly in tone from one to the next. She wanted the actor to rummage around for the truth, as messy and complicated as it revealed itself every time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI felt that Marie sometimes was looking at me a certain way, and I don\u2019t know what crossed her mind exactly \u2014 but she was surprised by the things I did,\u201d Seydoux says. \u201cI did my own little mixture. I had to pour in my own secrets. Sometimes as an actor, you know the character even better than the director.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t**<\/p>\n

\nGentle Monster <\/em>was not an easy movie for Kreutzer to make off of Corsage<\/em>. For one thing, going from lush period imagination to realist contemporary drama was a big leap by design. \u201cAfter Corsage<\/em>, I got sent a lot of scripts and offers about historical figures, but I just didn\u2019t want to repeat myself,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be a brand. I don\u2019t want to do what people expect from me. I always try really to be true to my vision and to my ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut then there was the meta-overlap between the two films. Shortly after Corsage<\/em>\u2019s release, the male lead Florian Teichtmeister was charged with possession of child pornography and eventually pleaded guilty, serving a two-year suspended prison sentence. Kreutzer was inspired to write Gentle Monster <\/em>after reading an article about the undetected prevalence of predators, working on it in the immediate aftermath of that scandal.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen we approached the funding institutions with this script, they were like, \u2018Oh my God, does she really have to do that?\u2019 \u2014 meaning, stir it all up again,\u201d Kreutzer says. \u201cMy producers and I were at the standpoint of, \u2018Well, isn\u2019t that approach the best one? To confront it and to not be silent about it?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMarie is more guarded, and Corsage<\/em> was a bit more distant,\u201d Seydoux adds. \u201cWith this one, it\u2019s more emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe material hit close to home, giving added resonance to the most chilling effect of Gentle Monster<\/em>: It tells the kind of story that could be happening across the street, anywhere in the world. Kreutzer made several specific choices to emphasize that quality. She shot on film, for one. \u201cAnalog film is closer to the human eye than digital, and I think we feel immediately closer and more in the story,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s why I love it so much.\u201d The most pivotal scenes take place in parking lots, backyards, drab police-station hallways \u2014 spaces characterized by their mundanity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe story of the investigator, Elsa, runs in parallel to Lucy. Elsa is also making excuses for a troubled man at home \u2014 in this case, her dementia-addled father, whose nurse claims he\u2019s harassing her. But at work, she is competent, collected and committed. Elsa tells Lucy, who\u2019s baffled by her choice to chase child sex predators for a living, \u201cIt\u2019s the best job I\u2019ve ever had. It\u2019s the first one that makes sense.\u201d Kreutzer lifted this line of dialogue straight from a policewoman she met in her research.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFor Lucy, her life is torn apart, but for Elsa, this is just one of many, many, many cases,\u201d Kreutzer explains.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs one of the anchor points on Netflix\u2019s awards slate, Gentle Monster <\/em>will meet a larger audience than the director is used to. \u201cI tried not to think about sales [at Cannes] because I was not sure if, with this subject, anyone would want to see the film, to be really honest,\u201d she says. Having made TV movies back home in Austria earlier in her career, she remembers seeing overnight viewership data and thinking, \u201cI could never achieve that in the cinemas.\u201d Now, with her boldest movie yet, she\u2019ll experience that instant attention to a far greater degree.<\/p>\n

\n\tSeydoux, for her part, is ready for whatever comes their way. \u201cThere have not been many movies made about this, and with a platform like Netflix, I\u2019m curious to see how people will react. It\u2019s an important movie to watch,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I like when it\u2019s intense.\u201d<\/p>\n
