\nVicky McClure wants to set the record straight.<\/p>\n

\n\tWe\u2019ve found a precious 40 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of press day for season four of ITV\u2018s Trigger Point<\/em> at London\u2019s Soho Hotel. Tucked into the corner of one of its underground bars, McClure speaks to The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>while her co-stars \u2014 Eric Shango, Natalie Simpson, Maanuv Thiara among them \u2014\u00a0dutifully pose for photos and laud the latest work of show creator Daniel Brierley.<\/p>\n

\n\tMcClure, returning as the no-nonsense bomb disposal expert Lana Washington in another high-octane, watch-behind-your-hands instalment, is taking us through her early years at Nottingham\u2019s Television Workshop, a Midlands-based film, TV, and theatre training school for kids from working-class backgrounds. She had initially eyed a career in professional dance and landed a place at the prestigious Italia Conti academy. But her family couldn\u2019t afford the tuition. She stayed with the Television Workshop until the age of 21.<\/p>\n

\n\tI halt the conversation early on to ask if what I\u2019ve read online \u2014\u00a0that McClure was mentored at the Workshop by The Odyssey <\/em>breakout Samantha Morton, a fellow Nottingham native \u2014 is true. The actress is quick to clarify: \u201cThat isn\u2019t correct. Sam is a huge part of the Workshop, and my word, I mean, even now, the gigs that she\u2019s in,\u201d she says, alluding to the latest Christopher Nolan hit, wide-eyed with awe. \u201c[But] we never crossed over. I actually didn\u2019t know her while I was in the Workshop.\u201d The pair would, later in their respective careers, meet at odd events. \u201cYou gravitate to each other if you\u2019re both from Nottingham or the Workshop,\u201d explains McClure, who was proudly born and raised in the English city (she has resisted the industry-induced pressure to relocate to the capital \u2014\u00a0a decision we\u2019ll come to later).<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was only when both of them were leading Dominic Savage\u2019s I Am\u2026 <\/em>series that McClure and Morton ended up \u201chaving a long chat on the phone.\u201d They\u2019ve stayed in touch, and McClure certainly calls her peer \u201can icon of the Workshop, and of the acting world.\u201d But, contrary to what the internet purports, this friendship didn\u2019t blossom until well beyond the Nottingham Television Workshop, which McClure remains a devoted patron of.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd while Morton\u2019s face currently graces thousands of cinema screens across the world, it is Vicky McClure who is known far and wide here in Britain. She has steadily risen through the ranks for two decades now to become one of the most prolific actors in the country, famed for her forthright characters and becoming, frankly, a legend of the U.K. police procedural (Line of Duty<\/em>, Broadchurch<\/em>, to name a few).<\/p>\n

\n\tWith Trigger Point <\/em>continuing to pull in millions of viewers \u2014\u00a0season three\u2019s seven-day consolidated average came in at 5.1m last year \u2014 and a hotly anticipated Line of Duty <\/em>return imminent, McClure, now 43, enters a chapter of her career marked by prolificacy, freedom, and industry-wide reverence.<\/p>\n

\n\tHer starring role aged 23 as Lol Jenkins in\u00a0Shane Meadows\u2019s 2006 film This Is England<\/em>, and in the Channel 4 sequel mini-series This Is England \u201986<\/em>, This Is England \u201988<\/em> and This Is England \u201990 <\/em>from 2010 to 2015, is what she considers her long-awaited big break. \u201cBut I went straight back to the office,\u201d McClure tells THR<\/em> about her job at a house valuation company. \u201cThere\u2019s just an illusion that once you\u2019re in a film or you\u2019re in something, that\u2019s it. Onward you go,\u201d she continues. \u201cI\u2019d train new people, then I sort of went into the HR department, looked after things like the vending machines, the post, a wide variety. I was even fire warden at one point, which I think has done me well for drifting into Lana,\u201d she laughs. \u201cThat was my thing. I\u2019d go off and do This Is England<\/em>, and then I\u2019d come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe worked at the business for eight years, and in that time, starred in a film directed by Madonna, Filth and Wisdom<\/em> (2008). \u201cWe always think people care more than they do,\u201d McClure says when asked what her office mates thought of the Madonna gig. \u201cYou know what I mean? They go, \u2018Oh, amazing. That\u2019s cool. Well, we\u2019re having lunch.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe reality is, while McClure was shooting with mega-stars, she was also getting told \u201cno\u201d a lot. \u201cI learnt very quickly to stop telling people when I had an audition because nine times out of 10, I never got the job,\u201d she admits. She recalls going up for roles in Peaky Blinders <\/em>and Sarah Gavron\u2019s 2015 Suffragette <\/em>film. \u201cThat was one of those moments,\u201d she says about feeling particularly heartbroken by the Suffragette <\/em>casting, which eventually went to Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff and Meryl Streep. \u201cI wasn\u2019t really that bothered about learning too much at school. I\u2019d missed out on lots of history, so Jonny [Owen, McClure\u2019s husband, also an actor and producer] sat down with me and we talked about the suffragette movement in great detail. I started getting really attached to this world and these characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOver time, she nailed the accent \u2014\u00a0\u201cat the Workshop, it wasn\u2019t like you trained to do accents, you just did them\u201d \u2014 but eventually, nothing came of it. \u201cThey\u2019re a bit naughty,\u201d she says. \u201cSometimes casting directors can do that thing where they go, \u2018So you\u2019re available for those dates?\u2019 Come on, guys. That\u2019s basically a: \u2018Let\u2019s shake hands and roll the cameras!’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, on TV especially, McClure gradually made a name for herself with small roles in Five Daughters<\/em>, The Body Farm<\/em> and True Love<\/em>. Then, in 2012, Jed Mercurio\u2019s Line of Duty <\/em>hit BBC Two. The series, about an anti-corruption unit inside a fictional police force, accrued a cult following around the world. Perhaps for the first time, McClure, as the driven, undaunted Detective Constable (later Sergeant and Inspector) Kate Fleming, was getting her flowers.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think I felt fame throughout This Is England<\/em>,\u201d she ponders. \u201cPeople were really respectful of that show, and it was such an ensemble piece that it didn\u2019t belong to just one person. It was a really special show\u2026 [And] I think Line of Duty<\/em> [is too]. It\u2019s not a fluke because Jed\u2019s writing is obviously impeccable, but it\u2019s all down to the audience, and if they start tuning in and if they show [interest], then you\u2019re in a good spot. But there\u2019s every chance it can go [the other way], and shows do, don\u2019t they?\u201d says the veteran of British broadcast television, likely well acquainted with the graveyard of BBC and ITV shows haunting various streaming platforms. \u201cNo one watches them, and then a few years later, there\u2019s this weird surge where everyone starts watching them again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the news of Line of Duty<\/em>\u2018s season seven broke last year, it certainly wasn\u2019t a surprise to McClure. \u201cWe\u2019d never closed the door,\u201d says Mercurio\u2019s star. \u201cMe, Jed, [co-stars] Martin [Compston] and Aidy [Adrian Dunbar] meet up for a curry at least a couple of times a year. We\u2019ve always had a sociable time when we make the show,\u201d she continues, \u201cand I think that comes across. We always said, \u2018Oh, it\u2019d be a shame if [season six] was the last one,\u2019 because we felt like we had a really different experience [during] COVID\u2026 So then it was a case of: How are the stars going to align? We\u2019ve all been lucky to get other gigs. Of course, Jed\u2019s busy. He\u2019s got to write it. We knew when he started to pick up his pen again\u2026\u201d she pauses, flashing a grin.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt is interesting, McClure adds, that Line of Duty<\/em> is predominantly a cast of working-class people, \u201cwritten by Jed, who grew up in a working-class family in Birmingham,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd it plays out on screen \u2014\u00a0you have accents and you have characters that are able to tap into certain flaws. Relationships were formed that are so long-lasting. Martin and Aidy are family now. I adore them both. So [hiring working-class talent] works. People need a bit more belief in those lives and characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMcClure has been a champion of opening doors for working-class creatives her whole career. Her work with the Television Workshop is testament to that, though she isn\u2019t content yet \u2014\u00a0by any means. \u201cLondon should not be the center of the universe. For anything,\u201d she says. \u201cDon\u2019t get me wrong, it\u2019s an amazing city. But there is Nottingham, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow\u2026 The world\u2019s a beautiful place, but with the industry in tow, it can\u2019t all be London central. It has been and it still is, for so many years. And it\u2019s just not serving anyone now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen I put to her that there has been something of a production boom outside of the capital \u2014 in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland \u2014\u00a0she maintains that while shoots are there, all of the really important get-togethers still happen in London. \u201cIt\u2019s really naive of us to think that people can just afford that horrendous train fare or the petrol, or whatever it may be, [and] to just up and leave to get to that meeting. And I remember it was tricky for me. To get here and go, \u2018I need to grab a sandwich and a cup of tea\u2019 or something. It\u2019s expensive.\u201d McClure knows from first-hand experience that thousands of young actors will miss out on network-building because they can\u2019t pay London rent: \u201cIt\u2019s a very privileged space, a very privileged industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd even when the long-hoped-for acclaim arrives, the quote-unquote \u201cfame\u201d comes with unwanted side effects. \u201cI don\u2019t want to sit here and go, \u2018It\u2019s been a problem for me,’\u201d concedes McClure, who says that staying in Nottingham has made showbiz a more liveable place \u2014\u00a0literally \u2014\u00a0for an actor of her calibre. \u201cI like to do things here and there. When I get nice invitations, if I can make them, and it\u2019s something I want to do, I\u2019ll go, and the paps [paparazzi] will do what they\u2019ll do. You can kind of control it, to a degree. You can choose to put yourself out there a bit more \u2014\u00a0and sometimes you need it. You need the promotion to help whatever business it is you\u2019re trying to sell.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis is the more pragmatic side to McClure. With a BAFTA and a handful of wildly popular shows under her belt, you can\u2019t deny it: She knows the ropes. \u201cIt\u2019s a business and I\u2019m in my mid-40s now,\u201d she continues. \u201cI\u2019m a bit wiser, a bit longer in the tooth. I can see what things are, and you\u2019re less naive. I\u2019m not Hollywood. I feel<\/em> Hollywood talking to The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>,\u201d she says, smiling again, though admitting she\u2019s never even been to L.A. (Tinseltown may yet come knocking \u2014\u00a0McClure\u2019s next film, Kenneth Branagh\u2019s The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde<\/em>, sees her next to Jodie Comer, Patricia Arquette and Michael Sheen.) \u201cI think when I\u2019m on my deathbed,\u201d she continues, \u201cI won\u2019t be worrying about my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat might McClure be more concerned with? Her charity work, for one \u2014\u00a0in 2019, she formed Our Dementia Choir following her late grandmother\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s\u00a0diagnosis. The organization was the subject of a BBC documentary, led by McClure, and over the years the group has performed in front of tens of thousands, including at Nottingham\u2019s Splendour Festival. She also has a production company co-founded with her husband, Build Your Own Films, backed by All3Media and committed to nurturing projects \u201crich in subject matter, diversity and representation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRight now, however, it\u2019s more Trigger Point <\/em>on the telly for McClure. Releasing soon, the new season promises a deeper look into Lana\u2019s trauma and, as you might have guessed, some pretty explosive drama. \u201cThere\u2019s no joke to her job. It is life and death,\u201d McClure says about returning to everyone\u2019s favorite Expo. \u201cWe feel like we\u2019ve seen it all in Trigger Point<\/em>. Different types of scenarios.\u201d She stops. Eye contact. \u201cYou haven\u2019t seen it all.\u201d She says this season\u2019s writing team had a lot of fun concocting more dire situations for the Met Police bomb squad. \u201cAnd we really own that. If there\u2019s anyone that can go out with a bang, it\u2019s Trigger Point<\/em>. This is the bomb show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe remembers reading a Times <\/em>paper describing the series as \u201cScooby-Doo <\/em>on acid.\u201d It was meant to be, according to McClure, a bit of a diss. She loved it. \u201cIt is Scooby-Doo <\/em>on acid!\u201d she beams. Most importantly, this Nottingham native is given the opportunity to take on the fearless Lana Washington once more, and it\u2019s exactly where Vicky McClure wants to be. \u201cI love it when she has one of them \u2018fuck you\u2019 moments. I always slip in a few more fuck\u2019s than I probably should!\u201d<\/p>\n
