\n\tWhen was the last time you heard about an actress<\/em> going fully Method during a movie production, staying in character constantly, weighed down by the self-inflicted burden of inhabiting a role so completely that it seems to consume their life?<\/p>\n

\n\tPretty much never, right?<\/p>\n

\n\tWhy is that?<\/p>\n

\nAnya Taylor-Joy has a theory. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Furiosa<\/em> and Queen\u2019s Gambit<\/em> star discussed the topic during a chat with Complex<\/em> while promoting Apple TV\u2019s limited series Lucky<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you\u2019ll notice, women don\u2019t method act because we have things to take care of,\u201d Taylor-Joy said. \u201cWe can\u2019t completely lose our minds. I see acting as kind of like a controlled psychosis in a way. You are pretending to be somebody else and having their thoughts 16 hours a day and moving with them and living in their house and in their clothes \u2026 But I\u2019m just very grateful that the people in my life understand that and know that. Sometimes if it gets a little bit out of hand, they\u2019ll call me by the character name, and they\u2019ll be like, \u2018Yo, we need to like check in again.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tContinued Taylor-Joy: \u201cBut yeah, I can\u2019t imagine keeping it up all the time because, again, you\u2019re going to work with hundreds of people. It is your responsibility to be good to them and to help them do their best job. If you\u2019re too invested in in being an asshole, then that\u2019s not going to be very fun.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tNatalie Portman actually made a similar argument in 2024, calling method acting \u201ca luxury that women can\u2019t afford.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRarely does any actor actually call their performance method acting. But some examples of actors who went to extremes to play a character that have been commonly cited as examples of method acting include Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Food<\/em> (reportedly had crew members move and spoon feed him rather than break character) and Lincoln<\/em> (reportedly maintaining the president\u2019s voice and persona during filming, including sending text messages to co-star Sally Field as his character); Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon<\/em> (staying in character as Andy Kaufman or his alter ego Tony Clifton); and Adrien Brody in The Pianist<\/em> (getting rid of his car and phone and isolating himself).<\/p>\n

\n\tDay-Lewis defended the practice at the London Film Festival last year. \u201cAll the recent commentary in the last few years about method acting is invariably from people who have little or no understanding of what it actually involves,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s almost as if it\u2019s some specious science that we\u2019re involved in, or a cult. But it\u2019s just a way of freeing yourself so that the spontaneity, when you are working with your colleagues in front of the camera, that you are free to respond in any way that you\u2019ll move to in that moment.\u201d He added that going Method doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re living separately from your actual life, but that \u201cyou\u2019re in a self-contained experience of your own.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMany other oft-cited examples tend to be actors who undergo extreme transformations, but don\u2019t actually stay in character between takes \u2014 such as Joaquin Phoenix in Joker<\/em> (though the actor has gone what one might call Method-adjacent in roles for I\u2019m Still Here<\/em> and Walk the Line<\/em>). <\/p>\n

\n\tThat said, there\u2019s at least one relatively recent cast of an actress doing what could be called method acting \u2014 Lady Gaga, for House of Gucci<\/em>, who said she lived as Patrizia Reggiani for 18 months, and stuck with the character\u2019s Italian accent for nine month. Said the pop star: \u201cI never broke, I stayed with her.\u201d<\/p>\n
