\nGeorge R.R. Martin has had a difficult year. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Game of Thrones<\/em> author and House of the Dragon<\/em> co-creator says that he\u2019s recently struggled with depression, despite enjoying some great moments in his professional life. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn what the author described as his first self-penned blog post in six months, Martin wrote: \u201cThis year has been \u2026 stressful, to say the least. So much has been happening, it\u2019s been overwhelming.\u00a0Some great things. Dreams coming true. But there have been nightmares too. I have lost friends.\u00a0Battled sadness and depression.\u00a0The worst may be yet to come. I turned seventy-seven last September, and I tell you, getting old is no fun.\u00a0But there have been amazing times as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tContinued Martin: \u201cI suppose that\u2019s just life.\u00a0Of course, I knew that.\u00a0If you\u2019ve read my stories, you know that.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tMartin noted his other blog posts since February have been written by his \u201cminions\u201d (assistants) and that he\u2019d make an effort to post some more update. \u201cBut my posts are likely to be short and rushed.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tOne highlight, Martin noted, was that the first season of HBO\u2019s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/em> earned nine Emmy nominations, \u201cincluding the big one\u201d \u2014 outstanding drama series. <\/p>\n

\n\tAnother highlight has been the opening of Game of Thrones: The Mad King<\/em>, a prequel to Thrones<\/em> staged at the UK\u2019s prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company. The entire first run has sold out, and the production has only just started previews. \u201cHaving\u00a0the RSC bring Westeros to the stage is so incredible that sometimes I fear am dreaming the whole thing,\u201d Martin wrote in February. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition, House of the Dragon<\/em> returned for a third season, which has enjoyed good reviews and strong ratings.<\/p>\n

\n\tMartin previously discussed aging during a Hollywood Reporter<\/em> cover story profile in January,. \u201cI never thought I\u2019d live to be 77,\u201d Martin said. \u201cI\u2019m old, so I have some old-people stuff. My lower back hurts sometimes. I don\u2019t like to stand around. But I feel OK. Maybe you should make that your headline: \u2018George R.R. Martin Is Not Dying.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of Martin\u2019s longstanding frustrations has been trying to finish his sixth Ice and Fire novel, The Winds of Winter<\/em>, which he\u2019s been working on for more than a decade. \u201cI wrote a Tyrion chapter I just loved,\u201d the author said. \u201cThen I looked at it and said: \u2018I can\u2019t do this, it will change the whole book. I\u2019ll make this into a series of dreams. No! That doesn\u2019t work either \u2026’\u201d Martin noted he would \u201chate\u201d not finishing Winds<\/em>, that giving up on the project would feel like \u201ctotal failure.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tNext up for Martin is the second season of Knight<\/em>, which is based on his novella The Sworn Sword<\/em>, and is expected early next year. The showrunner, Ira Parker, recently told THR<\/em> that Martin gave him unpublished pages of Dunk and Egg\u2019s adventures that were incorporated into the scripts. <\/p>\n
