{"id":4807,"date":"2026-08-03T18:08:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T18:08:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4807"},"modified":"2026-08-03T18:08:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T18:08:06","slug":"5-reasons-spider-man-brand-new-day-crushed-superhero-fatigue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4807","title":{"rendered":"5 Reasons \u2018Spider-Man: Brand New Day\u2019 Crushed Superhero Fatigue"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n<em>Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/em> just scored the highest-grossing domestic opening weekend ever. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4806\">\u2018Soulm8te\u2019 Review: Erotic Fembot Thriller From the M3GAN-Verse Is Enjoyably Lurid Pulp That Comes Up Short on Satirical Bite<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Sony-Marvel production grossed $360 million domestically and $572 million overseas, for a $932 million global launch.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt\u2019s an <em>extraordinary<\/em> result, and it\u2019s quite interesting that the previous domestic record holder was 2019\u2019s <em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBecause it was <em>Endgame<\/em> that marked the conclusion of the golden age of the MCU and, after the pandemic struck, comic book films at the box office were perceived as struggling with their own chronic ailment \u2014 superhero fatigue. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThere have been post-<em>Endgame<\/em> successes, of course. DC had successful franchise reboots with <em>The Batman<\/em> in 2022 and <em>Superman<\/em> in 2025. For Marvel, there was 2022\u2019s <em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/em>, 2023\u2019s <em>Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/em> and 2024\u2019s blockbuster <em>Deadpool &amp; Wolverine<\/em> \u2014 the only non-<em>Spider-Man<\/em> Marvel title to cross the billion mark since <em>Endgame<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe causes of superhero fatigue \u2014 which have recently arguably mutated into full-on franchise fatigue for many properties \u2014 have been endlessly discussed. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut let\u2019s look at why <em>Brand New Day <\/em>broke through the superhero doldrums of recent years to deliver an opening weekend that some in the industry had begun to wonder would ever happen again.   <\/p>\n<p>\n\t1. <strong>Every movie featuring Tom Holland as Spider-Man leading up to <em>Brand New Day<\/em> has been fun and popular<\/strong>. This means there\u2019s an impeccable \u201cchain of custody\u201d of Holland\u2019s character leading into the new film. <em>Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/em> (2017), <em>Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> (2019) and <em>Spider-Man: No Way Home<\/em> (2021) were all critical and audience favorites. Holland\u2019s appearances in blockbusters <em>Captain America: Civil War<\/em> (2016), <em>Avengers:<\/em> <em>Infinity War<\/em> (2018) and <em>Endgame<\/em> were well handled. Marvel similarly spent a decade effectively building its stories and characters toward <em>Infinity War<\/em> and <em>Endgame<\/em> has since been criticized for floundering a bit \u2014 awkwardly trying and discarding various characters and stories. But the stewardship of the Spider-Man brand has been immaculate.  <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4804\">Jaafar Jackson Set to Join Will Smith in Action Thriller \u2018Supermax\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t2. <strong><em>Brand New Day<\/em> has a more grounded, street-level vibe compared to many recent superhero films<\/strong>. And feeling more grounded and realistic is something audiences seem to be responding to largely (from lo-fi hits like <em>Obsession<\/em> and <em>Backrooms<\/em>, to epics heavily leaning on practical storytelling like <em>Project Hail Mary<\/em> and <em>The Odyssey<\/em>). Words like \u201cgrounded\u201d and \u201crealistic\u201d might seem like an overstatement \u2014 <em>Brand New Day<\/em> isn\u2019t exactly <em>Manchester by the Sea<\/em>. But in terms of Marvel movies, even compared with other <em>Spider-Man<\/em> movies, the film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton has a refreshingly non-manic pace, and many scenes which feel like Actual Drama. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhereas some weaker recent superhero movies, such as the space-based <em>Supergirl<\/em> and the <em>Fantastic Four<\/em>, relied heavily on otherworldly CG. Arguably, the weakest part of <em>Brand New Day<\/em> (<strong>mild spoiler<\/strong>) is the most Marvel-y \u2014 a lengthy boss fight between Spider-Man and the Hulk that could have been removed without affecting the story.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t3. <strong>The lack of MacGuffin<\/strong>. This point comes courtesy of longtime Spider-Man comic book writer, J. Michael Straczynski who took to Substack to praise <em>Brand New Day<\/em> and suggest the story works because it\u2019s character-driven rather than having its characters trying to obtain a magical object. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe worst thing any film, in any genre, can do is to fail to surprise the audience, by virtue of showing them something they\u2019ve already seen many times in various forms,\u201d Straczynski wrote. \u201c\u2026 a [MacGuffin] story is about the characters\u00a0<em>as a subset<\/em>\u00a0of a search for the stone, the orb, the tesseract, the godkiller sword, the spear of destiny \u2026 A character story, on the other hand, can start in a thousand different ways and resolve itself in just as many \u2026 in the end,\u00a0the solution is character based, not based on what happens to an external, inanimate object.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n\tStraczynski goes on to suggest superhero fatigue might actually be MacGuffin fatigue because the structure has been used so often, and notes many of the best superhero films (such as the 1978 <em>Superman<\/em> movie, <em>Iron Man<\/em>, <em>Logan<\/em> and <em>The Dark Knight<\/em>) are not \u201cMG\u201d films.  <\/p>\n<p>\n\t4. <strong>Tom Holland and Zendaya<\/strong>. Stars still matter. Holland and Zendaya are at the top of their game, and at the height of their box-office power. Fans are enamored with the now-married couple\u2019s real-life relationship, and that affinity bleeds over into the film, where Peter and MJ\u2019s relationship \u2014 or lack-thereof in the wake of Doctor Strange\u2019s spell causing the world to forget Peter Parker \u2014 is a central part of the film from the very beginning, and the two have several effective moments.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t5. <strong>Simply put, <em>Brand New Day<\/em> is terrific<\/strong>. As many critics have pointed out, <em>Brand New Day<\/em> is arguably the strongest Spider-Man film of the Tom Holland era (the best of any of them, in my view). The film\u2019s 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes audience score \u2014 though not its critics\u2019 score \u2014 is the highest of any live-action <em>Spider-Man<\/em> film. Holland\u2019s acting has never been better. There are cameos, twists and a fair amount of busywork setting up future films, but but the film\u2019s focus remains squarely on Holland\u2019s twin mission of defeating a mysterious new enemy and dealing with the aching loss of his girlfriend. <br \/><em>Brand New Day<\/em> has moments were even the most causal fans will <em>feel<\/em> things \u2014 there\u2019s a scene with Peter and MJ on a rooftop, in particular, that\u2019s devastating, and brings both our hero and the audience to a point of emotional surrender.
