\n\tWidow\u2019s Bay<\/em> has captivated viewers (and now Emmy voters, with its staggering 19 nominations) since its series debut in April. Blending horror with comedy, the Apple TV show takes place in a fictitious New England island town afflicted by a centuries-old curse that brings about supernatural evils.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn episode one, Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) clashes with local resident Wyck (Stephen Root) as the latter tells him the cursed history of Widow\u2019s Bay. Loftis is immediately skeptical, and the argument turns personal.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI really like scenes where no one is really wrong and you can understand why everyone\u2019s arguing so hard for their case,\u201d says creator and showrunner Katie Dippold of scripting the interaction. \u201cTo Wyck, it\u2019s like the danger signs are there, but you\u2019re too arrogant to pay attention to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re catching the tail end of this ridiculous conversation [of] Wyck giving the island\u2019s history, and he\u2019s treating it as deadly serious. Loftis is watching Patricia [Kate O\u2019Flynn] get sucked into it, and Loftis finally just blows up,\u201d Dippold explains. \u201cI liked showing Loftis\u2019 impatience with Wyck and the island and also that he\u2019s ignoring all this stuff that\u2019s about to ruin his life.\u201d Dippold, who also jokes that Rhys is \u201cactually very good at swearing,\u201d adds that a lot of the show\u2019s comedy is Loftis just biting his tongue and many residents of the island \u201crage-baiting\u201d him. \u201cWyck also thinks Loftis doesn\u2019t take the island\u2019s history seriously, and it\u2019s that message of the dangers of not knowing your history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[Tom] has this dream of this island being \u2014 he says here the next Bar Harbor \u2014 but we learn later, what he really wants is Martha\u2019s Vineyard,\u201d Dippold says. \u201cBut to Wyck, that\u2019s just a waste of time. Like, you\u2019re really looking for some kind of external validation. \u2026 Loftis is like, \u2018I want this to be a better place for my son, and you\u2019re holding on to these old, ridiculous ideas. Why would you get in the way with this?\u2019 \u201d Conversely, Dippold adds, Wyck sees Loftis as this \u201ckid who only came to the island on summer visits, so he sees him as this outsider.\u201d But as the scene continues, it turns out that Wyck does<\/em> have a personal issue with Loftis.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Dippold pitched the character of Mayor Tom Loftis to Rhys, she felt in her gut that he was the right actor to portray him. \u201cHe just played it so beautifully, like he was in a drama, but being naturally funny with pitch-perfect comedic timing,\u201d she says, pointing to this dialogue as an example. \u201cWhen Loftis says this line, \u2018I have done nothing to deserve this lack of trust,\u2019 there is a genuine hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWyck seems like the town drunk, but he\u2019s actually very smart and has a very sharp eye and really can size someone up pretty quickly and accurately,\u201d Dippold explains. \u201cI think that he just always had Loftis sized up. He could respect a kid daring to ring his doorbell and run away, but what really bothers him is someone pretending. Honor is very important to him, and Wyck just sees a coward.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDippold gives credit where credit is due. \u201cThere\u2019s no one that knows toeing the line better than Stephen Root. I just like this scene when he says the line, \u2018That\u2019s how I know you\u2019re not a leader because you\u2019ve always been a goddamn coward.\u2019 The way he delivers that \u2026 I know this is so clich\u00e9, [but] it\u2019s all in the eyes. They\u2019re all very good actors, and watching these two go toe-to-toe is a blast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou don\u2019t learn this until episode two, but Loftis\u2019 father never respected him, and Wyck almost symbolizes that figure to Loftis,\u201d says Dippold. \u201cLoftis is, in a way, arguing with his father, and as much as he\u2019s frustrated with this local, it\u2019s something bigger for him and it opens this wound. So when it takes this turn and Wyck cuts to the core of something that would humiliate Loftis, that really rattles him.\u201d<\/p>\n
