{"id":4604,"date":"2026-07-30T17:14:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T17:14:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4604"},"modified":"2026-07-30T17:14:02","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T17:14:02","slug":"spider-man-the-last-blockbuster-franchise-nobodys-managed-to-screw-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4604","title":{"rendered":"Spider-Man: The Last Blockbuster Franchise Nobody\u2019s Managed to Screw Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<svg><\/svg> <span>Logo text<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\tThe Marvel Cinematic Universe, in recent years, has been rather messy \u2014 to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4602\">\u2018House of the Dragon\u2019 Star Fabien Frankel Finally Gets His Flowers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tDC movies, for whatever reason, have always been hit or miss.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Star Wars<\/em> is lost in space.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>The<\/em> <em>Fast and Furious<\/em> veered off the road with its last two efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThen there\u2019s Spider-Man\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen was the last time you saw a <em>bad<\/em> Spider-Man movie? <\/p>\n<p>\n\tEver since we first met Tom Holland\u2018s Peter Parker, getting a surprise visit from Tony Stark in 2016\u2019s <em>Captain America: Civil War<\/em>, the character has lit up the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHolland\u2019s jittery, earnest, winsome take on the iconic 64-year-old comic iconic was instantly likable, radiating teen-geek charisma.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEach of Holland\u2019s first three solo Spider-Man films has performed better than the last. In 2017, <em>Homecoming<\/em> grossed $880 million globally. Then 2019\u2019s <em>Far From Home<\/em> racked up $1.1 billion. Then <em>No Way Home<\/em> made an incredible $1.9 billion. All scored above 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSome critics say <em>Brand New Day<\/em>, which opens this week, is the best in the franchise. It\u2019s poised to explode at the box office, tracking to open at $465 million globally. The anticipation for the film is remarkable considering how little <em>Brand New Day<\/em> relies on the usual superhero franchise pump-up mechanics. There\u2019s no cliffhanger storyline leading into this film, no splashy new villain in the trailers, no end-of-the-world stakes, or parade of returning legacy stars. <em>Brand New Day<\/em> is simply: <em>Hey, Spider-Man is back<\/em>. As analyst Jeff Bock put it on X: \u201cSuperhero fatigue is real, but\u00a0Spider-Man fatigue is not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe success is all the more remarkable considering Spider-Man\u2019s wonky joint custody corporate stewardship. Peter Parker is like a kid with divorced parents who\u2019s been forced to split his time between mom and dad. The solo films are Columbia Pictures releases financed by Sony, with Marvel Studios acting as a creative manager, and handling MCU integration in the crossover films. Plus there\u2019s former Sony boss Amy Pascal, who helped engineer the Marvel deal in 2015, and has continued producing the solo movies through her Pascal Pictures banner and acting as a bridge between Sony and Marvel.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt\u2019s seemingly a \u201ctoo many cooks\u201d recipe for disaster, but it\u2019s somehow worked. One wonders, if Disney had managed to seize full control of the character, if the franchise would enjoyed the same stellar track record (one can only imagine the mandatory Disney+ spin-off series).<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=4600\">\u2018Clueless\u2019 Sequel Series Moving Forward at Paramount+<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tAll of Spider-Man\u2019s responsible parties would presumably love to exclusively claim credit for the franchise\u2019s success. But Marvel has had its stumbles of late, and Sony\u2019s Spider-Man-adjacent villain movies (like <em>Madame Web<\/em>, <em>Morbius<\/em> and <em>Kraven the Hunter<\/em>) have largely flopped, so neither is otherwise flawless at franchise management. Few ever talk about the writers on superhero movies, for some reason, but clearly Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers (who co-wrote <em>Homecoming<\/em> and are the sole credited writing team for the three other Holland films) deserve plenty of credit (while Holland\u2019s appearances in <em>Civil War<\/em>, <em>Infinity War<\/em> and <em>Endgame<\/em> were scripted by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely).<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut also: One suspects the way Holland has played Parker has helped inform how the character has been written and directed. A script informs an actor how to play a role. But particularly in a franchise, the actor\u2019s delivery can teach its creative shepherds how best to use him moving forward. One can argue over which actor has been the best Spider-Man, but there\u2019s no argument over which actor has been the most <em>successful<\/em> Spider-Man.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNotably, the two animated <em>Spider-Verse<\/em> movies were also box office and critical hits. So was nearly every <em>Spider-Man<\/em> movie since Sam Raimi launched the franchise\u2019s modern era back in 2002. There is only one outright creative dud in the mix \u2014 2007\u2019s <em>Spider-Man 3<\/em>. Many likewise bash 2014\u2019s <em>The Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/em>, though, in my book, Marc Webb\u2019s film is very underrated. Still, even if you count <em>Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/em> as a disappointment, that\u2019s still a success rate of nine films out of 11 (assuming <em>Brand New Day<\/em> is a hit, which is basically a given).<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSo there\u2019s perhaps another reason for the franchise\u2019s continued success: This is a character that\u2019s so beloved and straightforward, he\u2019s actually tough to mess up. On the DC side, the equivalent is probably Batman. You <em>can<\/em> make a lousy Spider-Man or Batman movie \u2026 it\u2019s just tougher to do so. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt helps that Spider-Man\u2019s name is inaccurate. The character \u2014 in the films, if not always in the comics and multiverse guest visits \u2014 is never really a <em>man<\/em>, exactly, with all the assorted baggage a fully grown male character carries. Parker is perpetually just on the verge of manhood \u2014 youthful, optimistic, with a somewhat innocent boyish sense of romance. It\u2019s an inherently lovable combination \u2014 not cloyingly childish, but not spoiled by the heaviness of adulthood. The films are set in modern times, but the character is stealthily nostalgic.
