\n\tJean-Pierre Dorl\u00e9ac, the costume designer who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on Somewhere in Time<\/em>, the 1980 romantic fantasy that starred Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, has died. He was 83.<\/p>\n

\n\tDorl\u00e9ac died Thursday of natural causes at his Hollywood Hills home, a family spokesperson announced.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor television, Dorl\u00e9ac won Emmys in 1979 for his costume designs for the ABC sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica<\/em> and in 2001 for the AMC dark comedy The Lot<\/em>, set in 1930s Hollywood. He was nominated nine other times, four of those for NBC\u2019s time-traveling Quantum Leap<\/em> (he worked on all four seasons of the show, from 1989-93).<\/p>\n

\n\tStarting in 1977, Dorl\u00e9ac also designed for series including Blansky\u2019s Beauties<\/em>, Tales of the Gold Monkey<\/em>, Manimal<\/em>, The Greatest American Hero<\/em>, Airwolf<\/em>, Masquerade<\/em>, Berrenger\u2019s<\/em> and Matlock<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis big-screen r\u00e9sum\u00e9 included Buck Rogers in the 25th Century<\/em> (1979), The Blue Lagoon<\/em> (1980), Heart and Souls<\/em> (1993), The Only Thrill<\/em> (1997), Walking to the Waterline<\/em> (1998) and In Enemy Hands<\/em> (2004).<\/p>\n

\n\tDorl\u00e9ac was born on April 12, 1943, in Toulon, France, to an American military service member stationed with his family in Europe. He studied at the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts in France, and after his family moved back to the U.S., he started his career as an actor in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen one of his theater productions was looking for a costume designer, he grabbed that opportunity, which led him to design the costumes for Marat\/Sade<\/em> in 1973 for the West Coast Theatre in Los Angeles, earning a Drama Critics Circle Award. He would become a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of famed costume designer Edith Head\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs an author, Dorl\u00e9ac wrote the 2005 novel Abracabra Alakazama<\/em> and 2015\u2019s The Naked Truth: An Irreverent Chronicle of Delirious Escapades<\/em>, a book about Hollywood and glamour in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

\n\tSurvivors include his spouse, Gilberto Mello, whom he met 41 years ago in Rio de Janeiro. Per his wishes, there won\u2019t be a memorial service or funeral \u201cas he wanted people to remember him making jokes, telling stories, laughing and designing beautiful costumes.\u201d<\/p>\n
