\n\tClio Barnard\u2019s I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning<\/em> has won the People\u2019s Choice Award of Cannes\u2019 Directors\u2019 Fortnight sidebar.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe kitchen-sink drama follows five working class friends \u2014\u00a0Patrick, Shiv, Rian, Oli and Conor \u2014 who came up together in a tower block in Birmingham who are now in their 30s and find themselves on increasingly divergent \u2014 and for most of them, increasingly constrained \u2014 paths to the future.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe People\u2019s Choice award is backed by the Fondation Chantal Akerman, set up in honor of the late French director Chantal Akerman (Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce<\/em>), a Directors\u2019 Fortnight regular. It comes with a \u20ac7,500 ($8,700) cash bursary for the director of the winning film.<\/p>\n

\n\tBarnard\u2019s fifth feature is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kieran Goddard. Enda Walsh, the writer behind Die My Love<\/em> and Hunger<\/em>, adapted the novel for the screen. The film stars Anthony Boyle, Joe Cole, Jay Lycurgo, Daryl McCormack and Lola Petticrew.Tracy O\u2019Riordan produced for Moonspun Films. Curzon Film is distributing in the U.K., with Charades handling world sales.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nBarnard is no stranger on the Croisette. Her feature <\/em>The Selfish Giant<\/em> won the Europa Cinemas Label prize back in 2013.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n\tA second Directors\u2019 Fortnight prize, the Coup de C\u0153ur des Auteurs prize from French rights collection society SACD, went to Shana<\/em>, the solo feature debut of French director Lila Pinell.<\/p>\n

\n\tAdapted from her own short film, Shana<\/em> stars Eva Huault as the titular character: a volatile small-time drug dealer with a toxic boyfriend about to get out of prison. No\u00e9mie Lvovsky, In\u00e8s Gherib, Ana\u00efs Monah, Bettina De Van, Genevi\u00e8ve Krief and S\u00e9kouba Doucour\u00e9 co-star. It is produced by Ecce Films and CG Cinema \u2014 the latter also behind Cannes Competition title Minotaur<\/em>, by Andrey Zvyagintsev. Losange Films is handling world sales.<\/p>\n
