\nChristopher Nolan has directed everything from sci-fi thrillers such as Interstellar<\/em>, Tenet<\/em> and Inception<\/em> to historical dramas like Dunkirk<\/em> and Oppenheimer<\/em>, mysteries like The Prestige<\/em> and Memento<\/em> and superhero films with his Dark Knight <\/em>trilogy. But there\u2019s one genre the Oscar-winning filmmaker said he\u2019d be \u201cterrified\u201d to tackle: romantic comedies.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/em> Thursday, Nolan discussed the lengths he went to shoot his adaptation of Homer\u2019s Greek epic The Odyssey<\/em> on 70mm IMAX cameras, making it the first feature film to do so. Fallon jokingly asked the director if he ever thinks about doing an \u201ceasy\u201d next film, specifically asking, \u201cHow about a Christopher Nolan rom-com?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult,\u201d Nolan replied. \u201cI love watching those movies. But, no, I think people who direct comedy, people who do comedy, I think that\u2019s one of the hardest things in the world to make people laugh that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cParticularly the risk they take,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhen you make a film \u2026 you know, if I show a film to people and maybe they don\u2019t respond to bits of it, I\u2019m like, \u2018Ah, they don\u2019t get it. Whatever.\u2019 There\u2019s no hiding behind that when you do comedy.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen it comes to the genre, Nolan admitted, \u201cI would be terrified of doing anything like that.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWhile romantic comedies aren\u2019t on his radar, horror is another story. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, Nolan was asked whether The Odyssey<\/em> had whet his appetite for directing a horror film, given that it features several horror-like sequences.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt very much whets my appetite for more,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut I\u2019ve always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea,\u201d Nolan added. \u201cWhen you go see a film like\u00a0Obsession<\/em>, that\u2019s an amazing idea. That movie works like a motherfucker. It\u2019s not about the technical side. It\u2019s not about what technical itches I would have to scratch. It\u2019s about story. So I\u2019m always looking.\u201d <\/p>\n
