Just ask Danya\u202fJimenez and Hannah McMechan, who met as freshmen at Loyola Marymount University\u2019s film school and last year co-wrote the Netflix animated hit and Oscar winner <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs the industry begins openly courting AI advancements, schools that introduced the controversial technology into the curriculum two years ago continue to double down, with UT Austin adding even more dedicated AI classes to their course catalogs. At the same time, other schools like AFI and Wesleyan are bolstering their celluloid offerings at a time when analog film is becoming an increasingly large selling point.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tEven with a top education, employment in the contracting entertainment industry is far from ensured, and student loans continue to be a massive burden for any aspiring filmmaker. But schools are looking out for students even after they turn in their cap and gown. At Chapman University, a seven-figure donation will be going toward the school\u2019s career center. And then there are the fully-funded MFA programs at Northwestern for an entirely tuition-free (albeit competitive) graduate degree.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWith all of this in mind \u2014 and after many calls, emails and all-nighters in the campus library \u2014 <em>THR<\/em> unveils its 2026 list of the nation\u2019s top film schools.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>USC<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tAfter already dominating the box office, alums Ryan Coogler and Sev Ohanian, who met while in their respective graduate film programs, swept through awards season with their hit <em>Sinners<\/em>. Never one to pass up a synergistic opportunity, the School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) then introduced a course focused on <em>Sinners<\/em> \u2014 an in-depth exploration of the making of the movie that will include talks from creative heads and executives, many of whom are (you guessed it!) USC alumni. As for favorite classes, alum Shawn Levy name-checks a course called Directing Actors taught by <em>Heroes<\/em> filmmaker Jeremy Kagan, saying, \u201cJeremy [taught] us about the cornerstone aspect of directing that so many filmmakers fail to learn: Decisive leadership is bedrock, it\u2019s essential; without it, a director \u2014 hell, a cast, crew and shoot \u2014 is screwed.\u201d Elsewhere, alum and Marvel head Kevin Feige has made a monetary gift that will go toward faculty, students and programming at the newly named Kevin Feige Division of Film &amp; Television Production. And while SCA\u2019s curriculum has always kept up with industry trends and interests (a new production lab will be focused on vertical dramas), it is impossible to future-proof a rapidly changing entertainment industry. But that doesn\u2019t mean it isn\u2019t trying, as is the case with a funding increase for the SCA First Jobs Program, which is meant to place grads in paid entertainment jobs and is available to alums five years out from graduation.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>TUITION<\/strong> $75,384 (undergraduate); $49,495 to $65,726 (graduate)<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>ALUMNI <\/strong>Jon M. NYU\u2019s\u00a0Tisch\u00a0School of the Arts partnered with Runway AI to make AI training available for free to select students, while a new undergraduate course \u2014 Generative Filmmaking in the Age of Hypercinema \u2014 was designed to give students hands-on virtual production experience and work with generative AI. As for faculty, Peter Saraf, the Oscar-nominated producer behind <em>The Farewell<\/em> and <em>Little Miss Sunshine<\/em>, is now heading up the undergraduate department of film and TV. While the industry continues to shift its focus to new tech (and AFI has an Amazon partnership that gives students access to AI tools), the conservatory is now requiring that fellows shoot one of their shorts on film stock, with celluloid reemerging among the highest echelons of studio and indie filmmaking, like Arkapaw\u2019s <em>Sinners<\/em>. The DP says her time at AFI gave her \u201cthe foundation and the confidence to understand what it truly takes to find a story.\u201d As for other alumni, the top winner at this year\u2019s Sundance Film Festival, <em>Josephine<\/em>, was written and directed by graduate Beth de Ara\u00fajo. A $1 million donation will be going toward the school\u2019s career center, which is dedicated to helping students find postgrad employment. A new endowed, need-based scholarship from writer and EU alum Seth Grahame-Smith (<em>The Lego Batman Movie<\/em>) will be awarded to four film students annually and will last the duration of their education. It is notable, then, that DePaul has launched full-tuition scholarships for incoming MFA students across directing, creative producing, screenwriting and animation, in addition to expanding the number of merit-based scholarships it will hand out to students pursuing graduate degrees in the arts. The school also has launched a postgraduate fund with $100,000 in cash and production resources for alumni looking to produce proof-of-concept pieces for larger projects. In the past year, there has been more than $2 million in new gifts, including more than $600,000 from Carol Burnett for scholarships and equipment, eight AI summits and new courses and summer workshops focused on virtual production.
