\n\tWhen entering Dan Abrams\u2019 New York office, I had no idea what his abs looked like \u00ad\u00ad\u2014 not a topic that usually comes up in media profiles. By the time I walked out, that was no longer the case. But let\u2019s not get ahead of ourselves.<\/p>\n

\n\tAbrams, a court reporter turned entrepreneur, has a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 that prints out like a CVS receipt. He\u2019s the CEO of content studio Law&Crime, which recently acquired Court TV, where Abrams got his start. He\u2019s chief legal analyst at ABC News, founder and CEO of website Mediaite, host of SiriusXM radio series The Dan Abrams Show<\/em> (SiriusXM POTUS) and host and exec producer of the cable series Court Cam<\/em> (A&E) and On Patrol: Live<\/em> (Reelz).<\/p>\n

\n\tPicturing the man\u2019s workday, one could use a drink \u2014 and Abrams has me covered. The father of two is a vineyard owner (Ev&Em, named after his kids), a restaurateur (Danny\u2019s American Wine Bistro in the Flatiron District) and the purveyor of his Rotten Tomatoes-for-booze company The Daily Pour. \u201cHe\u2019s always got his eye out for an opportunity,\u201d Abrams\u2019 friend and GMA<\/em> colleague George Stephanopoulos tells me, and \u201cthe energy to pursue it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUntil a few months ago, Abrams also counted NewsNation show Dan Abrams Live <\/em>among his gigs. He finally had to say \u201cwhen\u201d with that one. \u201cThe truth is, the NewsNation show took up more than 50\u202fpercent of my day,\u201d Abrams says. \u201cThe idea of giving up a cable news show \u2014 a primetime <\/em>show \u2014 would never have been something I would have thought I\u2019d do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs if he weren\u2019t already making the rest of us look lazy, Abrams also has authored six books \u2014 four of them New York Times<\/em> best-sellers \u2014 and he\u2019s got at least one more in him.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m thinking about a health and fitness book called Scars, Sanity and a Six-Pack at 60<\/em>,\u201d Abrams tells me.<\/p>\n

\n\tI can vouch for the scar and the six-pack. Abrams lifted his shirt to reveal a 12-inch surgical scar running from chest to \u2014 well, he\u2019d have to take his pants off for that one, and this is<\/em> still a place of business, last I checked.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe cover would be that,\u201d Abrams says, \u201cshowing a massive scar.\u201d (And the six-pack, of course.)<\/p>\n

\n\tAbrams is a survivor of testicular cancer (add that to his list of accomplishments). He was diagnosed in 2003 while working on-air at MSNBC. The doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center told Abrams there was a 50 percent chance the cancer \u2014 which he self-discovered (\u201cCheck your balls; it could save your life,\u201d he tells me) \u2014 had spread to the lymph nodes in his stomach.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was 37, single and completely freaked out,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n

\n\tAbrams kept the diagnosis and treatment to himself for about a year. He only shared his cancer journey publicly, via an eight-minute Today<\/em> segment, after reading about the death of Sean Kimerling, a weekend sports reporter at WPIX Channel 11 in New York City. Abrams and Kimerling never knew each other but existed in similar orbits. Not only were they both NYC-based journalists, but they were the same age, had the same type of cancer and were treated at the same hospital at the same time.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe almost looked like me,\u201d Abrams says, \u201cand he died of testicular cancer. That could have been me. It just happened that I discovered it earlier, and he didn\u2019t.\u201d Abrams has long been cancer-free; he stopped needing annual screenings in 2013.<\/p>\n

\n\tAbrams, who turned 60 on May\u202f20, tries not to drink \u201cat least\u201d three nights a week, he tells me. When he does, it is either his vino or bourbon, which he fell for during the Live PD<\/em> days. You remember Live PD <\/em>(A&E), the hit On Patrol: Live<\/em> predecessor that was knee-jerk canceled after George Floyd was killed in May 2020. Live PD<\/em> was ended to appease employees at the basic\u202fcable channel, Abrams says. \u201cI think that even the folks who made the decision to cancel Live PD<\/em> would say in retrospect that it was a mistake. Now they would tell you that they didn\u2019t have a lot of options, meaning there was a lot of pressure internally. It did feel like we were hung out to dry.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was angrier at the time than I am today,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

\n\tWell, sure, he almost lost his bourbon buddies.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe started bringing in drinks because, you know, we\u2019re there till midnight, right? No one has a social life on weekends if you\u2019re doing the show Friday and Saturday nights,\u201d Abrams said. \u201cSo, every Friday night, I would bring in some wine, other people brought in some whiskey. I started trying whiskey, and it does have the layers of flavor that wines have.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAbrams\u2019 palate is on display at Danny\u2019s, which opened in October and sells what the titular Danny calls \u201celevated comfort food.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe restaurant has \u201cexploded,\u201d Abrams said, and is \u201cone of the hardest reservations to get in New York right now.\u201d Worth it, Stephanopoulos vouches.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn opening night, he dined there with wife Ali Wentworth and another journalist\/actress married couple, Peter Lattman and Isabel Gillies. \u201cWe had the fried chicken, which was excellent. We had a burger,\u201d Stephanopoulos said. \u201cIt was awesome. We just split a bunch of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen I asked Stephanopoulos to share an only-in-New-York story about Abrams, he thought for a moment, and then did me one better: \u201cWell, you can\u2019t get more New York than opening a restaurant named after yourself, in the hottest restaurant district in town.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tDan\u2019s Typical Friday\t<\/h2>\n

\n7:15 a.m.<\/strong>Wake up and review newsletters from Axios, Politico and Punchbowl and scan Mediaite\u2019s front page. Send notes to the producer of my SiriusXM show.<\/p>\n

\n8 a.m. <\/strong>Go to the kitchen to sit with my daughter before she goes to school.<\/p>\n

\n9 a.m. <\/strong>Gym for an hourlong workout: stretching, weights, rowing, running and jumping rope.<\/p>\n

11 a.m. <\/strong>Make it to the office (the walk takes about 10 minutes).<\/p>\n

11 a.m.-1 p.m.<\/strong> Full slate of meetings. Usually eat lunch at my desk around 1 (I don\u2019t eat breakfast).<\/p>\n

1-2 p.m.<\/strong> Free time to prepare for my show and as needed put out any professional fires.<\/p>\n

2-3 p.m. <\/strong>My show is live.<\/p>\n

3:30 p.m. <\/strong>May have an interview at ABC News for one of its longform documentaries.<\/p>\n

\n4:30 p.m.<\/strong> Get picked up to go to Jersey City for On Patrol: Live<\/em>. There is tons of traffic, so I usually arrive around 5:30 there <\/p>\n

\n6 p.m. <\/strong>We have an early dinner there and then have our show meeting.<\/p>\n

6:45 p.m.<\/strong> I go to makeup and am on set to shoot some promo content by 7 p.m.<\/p>\n

7:30 p.m.<\/strong> Usually have a break and have to be on set at 8:30 p.m. to watch the live feeds coming in.<\/p>\n

9 p.m.<\/strong> On Patrol: Live<\/em> starts at 9\u202fp.m. I\u2019m on set until midnight.<\/p>\n

MIDNIGHT<\/strong> We then have pizza, bourbon and wine for about 30 to 45 minutes after the show, and I\u2019m usually home around 1:15 a.m.<\/p>\n
