\nRami Malek almost turned the down his role in Ira Sach\u2019s The Man I Love<\/em>, as a gay, singing performance artist in 1980s New York at the height of the AIDS crisis, because he worried he\u2019d be accused of self-plagiarizing his Oscar-winning role as Freddie Mercury in 2018\u2019s Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAt first when I read [Sachs\u2019s] script I said, \u2018No, I can\u2019t do this. There\u2019s too many similarities. It could be problematic,\u201d Malek said Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film, which received a 7-minute standing ovation at its world premiere Wednesday night and is now being talked about as a potential winner of the Palme d\u2019Or.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a certain sense of fear,\u201d he continued, \u201cand I started to really think about what I was afraid of. Was it the similarities? Was it the singing? Was it obviously what was going on in the period?\u2026 And I knew I had to address the fear. If there\u2019s anything Freddie taught me, it was \u2018Address the fear.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMalek is already getting Oscars buzz for his performance as Jimmy, an enigmatic and magnetic performance artist preparing for what he knows may be his last time onstage. <\/p>\n

\n\tMalek said he soon realized Jimmy and Freddie weren\u2019t nearly as similar as they appeared on paper. Freddie Mercury was an icon, and Jimmy, his character in Sachs\u2019s film, was a talented but struggling artist doing a downtown experimental theater recreation of a French movie nobody\u2019s heard about, in what he knows may be his last time onstage. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJimmy is just searching for creativity and love and intimacy and joy and pleasure in every moment, and he can sing,\u201d Malek explained. \u201cDoes he sing as well as Freddie? No\u2026. Was it ever going to be perfect? Didn\u2019t have to be. It was just about this element of creating and living in joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJimmy, like a lot of artists in New York at the time, just wanted to impress the people who lived next door, Sachs explained.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere are a lot of people who aspire to be someone like Freddie Mercury,\u201d Malek went on, \u201cand there are a lot of artists in the world who don\u2019t get to that level, but still have an abundance of talent and skill and a world to offer that is maybe unseen by the masses, but communally get some recognition, or they find a way to recognize it amongst themselves, and perhaps that can be almost as gratifying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd with Jimmy, he said, he wanted to make a portrait of those people, whose work was beloved by a few, and who died far too young, but who should nonetheless not be forgotten.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tMalek said he also had a fear that Sachs wouldn\u2019t want to work with him, after he requested a meeting with the director, whose work he\u2019s admired for years. \u201cPeople often say, after the Oscar, you just kind of get offered things,\u201d said Malek. \u201cIt\u2019s just not the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the two hit it off and Sachs said he cast Malek because Jimmy needed to have certain star quality that everyone around him would be drawn to. \u201cI think that there is this suspense of \u2018What\u2019s going to happen?\u2019 within a second,\u201d Sachs told Malek at the press conference. \u201cWith Rami, you never know if he\u2019s going to jump over the counter\u2026 There\u2019s a danger there, and I think it\u2019s really important for acting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDanger seems an important element for a film that Sachs said was based on the \u201crage\u201d and \u201canger\u201d of having lived through the 1980s AIDS crisis at a time when the U.S. government was largely abandoning gay men.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSachs pointed out that at the time he was a member of ACT UP, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power \u2014 a guerilla activist group who staged protests like chaining themselves to the New York Stock Exchange to protest the high price of the only FDA-approved HIV\/AIDS drug, AZT.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd the motto of ACT UP is \u2018Silence Equals Death,\u2019\u201d said Sachs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTelling stories like this (and selling movies like this), Sachs said \u201cis a fight, but we hope that in some ways the fight disappears. But the rage is in this film.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tIt was important for him and his writing partner Mauricio Zacharias to write this movie, Sachs added, \u201cBecause we lived it\u2026 both of us were, I guess in a way, survivors of that time, and also we remembered so much about it that maybe other people couldn\u2019t feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

It just took them 15 years and six films to get to this one, Sachs said. They wanted to convey that it was a dark period, but also one of light and creativity. \u201cIt was a period of loss and great sadness, but there was also this collective spirit of filled with art, filled with joy, filled with pain,\u201d said Sachs. \u201cWe had so much that we wanted to convey in that conflict between what was lost and what existed, but it just took a long time for us to be ready and have a perspective on the story we wanted to tell.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
