{"id":3725,"date":"2026-07-16T05:36:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T05:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=3725"},"modified":"2026-07-16T05:36:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T05:36:20","slug":"the-odyssey-what-critics-are-saying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=3725","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The Odyssey\u2019: What Critics Are Saying"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<svg><\/svg> <span>Logo text<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\tThe time has come: reviews are in for Christopher Nolan\u2018s highly anticipated epic <em>The Odyssey<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=3723\">The Best 4K Smart TVs for Watching Live Sports<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tFollowing the success of 2023\u2019s <em>Oppenheimer<\/em> \u2014 which earned Nolan his first Academy Awards for best director and best picture \u2014 the filmmaker turned his attention to adapting Homer\u2019s ancient Greek epic. <em>The Odyssey<\/em> also made history as the first feature film shot entirely with Imax 70mm film cameras.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs of midday Wednesday, the film holds a 98 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, currently the highest of Nolan\u2019s career, and is tracking for a massive opening weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStarring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film follows the Greek king\u2019s long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War as he attempts to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland). The ensemble cast also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Travis Scott, Charlize Theron and more.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhile anticipation has remained high, the film has also faced online criticism in recent months. Nolan recently brushed off that backlash as \u201cirrelevant,\u201d saying many of those criticizing the movie had yet to see it.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAhead of the film\u2019s Friday release, here\u2019s what critics are saying about <em>The Odyssey<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s<\/em> David Rooney is among those praising the cast and impressive production: \u201cWhile\u00a0<em>The Odyssey<\/em>\u00a0is uneven, and no match for the sure-footedness and intellectual complexity of\u00a0<em>Oppenheimer<\/em>, it\u2019s elevated by the blindingly charismatic ensemble,\u201d he wrote. \u201cDamon is superb, going to dark places seldom if ever explored in his previous roles; Hathaway is a model of steely self-possession masking vulnerability \u2026 Work on the craft side unsurprisingly is top-notch. It doesn\u2019t help that Holland, while always an appealing screen presence, is wrong for the role. Like Pattinson, the Brit actor plays his character with an American accent. But he comes across as, well, Peter Parker in a tunic, sapping the gravitas from Telemachus\u2019 path to maturity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n<em>The Guardian\u2019s<\/em> Peter Bradshaw, wrote, \u201cThis is a film with thrilling ambition, boldness, seriousness, generosity and flair. There are some broad-brush moments in the dialogue, yes, but even these are applied with a muscular flourish. It has gasp-inducing, Imax-sized landscapes of loneliness shot by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema \u2014 who, incidentally, avoids the sea\u2019s traditional cliched color \u2014 and full-tilt battle sequences and fight scenes accompanied by the throbbing and thrumming of drums.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>IGN\u2019s<\/em> Scott Collura wrote, \u201cA must-watch cinematic experience, an epic film version of an epic poem that adapts many of the out-there concepts of Homer through a new eye that frequently brings a sense of horror and existential angst to the story \u2014 and even a bit of humor too! Matt Damon is fine as the title character if not revelatory, but the extensive supporting cast frequently prop up individual moments, as do some of Nolan\u2019s unique additions to the story. While Odysseus\u2019 emotional journey here can be as choppy as a rough day at sea, and the \u2018civilization is eroding\u2019 theme is undercooked, the film\u2019s bigger observations on the effects of war on those who are forced to participate in it are well met. <em>The Odyssey<\/em> isn\u2019t perfect, but it\u2019s a pretty great moviegoing experience all the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Empire\u2019s <\/em>John Nugent wrote, \u201cThe scale and scope here is, frankly, jaw-detaching. It is filmmaking at a\u00a0magnitude\u00a0few modern directors could ever realistically imagine, demand or execute. Yet what is most\u00a0striking about this film is its quieter moments \u2026 Samantha Morton\u2019s Circe, meanwhile, provides the closest Nolan has come to\u00a0full-on\u00a0horror, an astonishing sequence full of shocking fury and sadness at the baseness of men.\u201d He added: \u201cIt may be set in a mythical universe, but Nolan is again raging at the folly of a humanity we might recognize \u2014 on an enormous, IMAX-sized canvas. Nobody does it better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>The Telegraph\u2019s<\/em> Robbie Collin wrote, \u201cNolan and his collaborators have constructed a strange, fearsome and trailblazing machine of a movie \u2014 by some distance, the best of the year so far.
