\nSam Neill, the amiable and adventurous leading man who emerged from New Zealand to make his mark in such films as Jurassic Park<\/em>, The Piano<\/em>, Dead Calm<\/em>, In the Mouth of Madness<\/em> and so much more, has died. He was 78. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe news was shared in a post on Neill\u2019s official Instagram account.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is with immense sadness that the wh\u0101nau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia,\u201d the post read. \u201cSam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent\u2019s Private Hospital for their incredible care. More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNeill revealed in March 2023 that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma a year earlier.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not in any way frightened of dying. That doesn\u2019t worry me. It\u2019s never worried me from the beginning,\u201d he told the TV news magazine Australian Story<\/em> in October 2023. \u201cBut I would be annoyed, because there are things I still want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarly in his career, the boundary-breaking Neill starred in Sleeping Dogs<\/em> (1977), one of the first New Zealand films to play internationally; in the Australian period drama My Brilliant Career<\/em> (1979), opposite Judy Davis; and as Damien in the third Omen<\/em> film, The Final Conflict<\/em> (1981), filmed in the U.K.<\/p>\n

\n\tNeill also played a Russian officer in John McTiernan\u2019s The Hunt for Red October<\/em> (1990); a captain of a doomed spaceship in Paul W.S. Anderson\u2019s Event Horizon<\/em> (1997); the father of Scarlett Johansson\u2019s character in Robert Redford\u2019s The Horse Whisperer<\/em> (1998); and the patriarch of a family with a robot (Robin Williams) in Chris Columbus\u2019 Bicentennial Man<\/em> (1999).<\/p>\n

\n\tOn television, he portrayed a real-life spy on the 1983 ITV series Reilly: Ace of Spies<\/em>; the King Arthur magician Merlin in Hallmark miniseries that aired in 1998 and 2006; Cardinal Thomas Wolsey on Showtime\u2019s The Tudors<\/em> in 2007; the corrupt police inspector Chester Campbell on the BBC\u2019s Peaky Blinders<\/em> in 2013-14; and a husband whose wife goes missing in Peacock\u2019s Apples Never Fall<\/em> in 2024.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter starring alongside Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane in the psychological thriller Dead Calm<\/em> (1989), directed by Australian Phillip Noyce, Neill had quite the year in 1993 with his turns as the cynical paleontologist Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg\u2018s Jurassic Park<\/em> and as the cold, cruel frontiersman Alisdair Stewart in The Piano<\/em>, directed by New Zealander Jane Campion.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd in John Carpenter\u2019s In the Mouth of Madness<\/em> (1994) \u2014 one of his many horror films \u2014 Neill played the insurance man John Trent, whose investigation leads him into an insane asylum.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe versatile Neill portrayed heroes and villains with equal aplomb, sparkled in art house and tentpoles alike and had a knack for exploring the shades of gray in his characters. \u201cI\u2019d like to think I\u2019m able to suggest ambiguities and complexities in the people I play, because I think all of us have hidden aspects or contradictory qualities,\u201d he once said.<\/p>\n

\n\tNigel John Dermot Neill was born on Sept. 14, 1947, on the kitchen table in the family home in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, where his father, Dermot, a third-generation New Zealander, was stationed with the Royal Irish Fusiliers as a member of the British Army. His mother, Priscilla, was English.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey moved in 1955 to New Zealand, where his family had a wine and spirits merchant business, and he attended boarding school at Medbury School and Christ\u2019s College in Christchurch. He started calling himself Sam \u2014 he liked Westerns, and \u201cWestern people were called things like Sam,\u201d he wrote in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?<\/em> \u2014 and had a stuttering problem.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe got interested in acting while attending the University of Canterbury, then earned a degree in English literature at Victoria University. After graduation, Neill toured for a year doing Shakespeare with the Players\u2019 Drama Quartet and spent six years as a director of shorts and documentaries with the New Zealand National Film Unit.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe informal agreement there was that you\u2019d make one film for the post office or the railways or the banana company and you\u2019d make one for yourself,\u201d he said in a 2009 interview. \u201cI wanted to make a film about skiing \u2014 I love skiing \u2014 but I had to dress it up and say that it would be really good for tourism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNeill also did a bit of acting, and after he was spotted playing a priest in the short film Ashes<\/em> (1975), he was cast in the lead as a man on the run from a totalitarian government in Sleeping Dogs<\/em> (1977), directed by Roger Donaldson. The thriller, the first color film made in New Zealand, helped kickstart the country\u2019s \u201ccinema of unease\u201d movement.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe said he fell in love with Australia while he was portraying Davis\u2019 complicated love interest in Gillian Armstrong\u2019s My Brilliant Career<\/em> (1979), which screened in competition in Cannes and made him realize that he could make a living doing what he loved to do. Around this time, he also recurred as Ben Dawson on the Nine Network period soap opera The Sullivans<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tRecommended by James Mason, Neill got to play Damien \u2014 the antichrist is now a grown-up U.S. ambassador \u2014 in The Final Conflict<\/em>. Two years later, he was the dashing Russian adventurer turned British secret agent Sidney Reilly on Reilly: Ace of Spies<\/em>, and he earned a Golden Globe nomination for that.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe would become a favorite in Sweden after starring as the villain Brian de Bois-Guilbert on a 1982 TV adaptation of Ivanhoe<\/em> that airs on New Year\u2019s Day every year in the country, then starred alongside Meryl Streep for Aussie director Fred Schepisi in Plenty<\/em> (1985) and Evil Angels<\/em> (1988), the latter about one of the most controversial legal cases in Australian history.<\/p>\n

\n\tNeill auditioned for James Bond in The Living Daylights<\/em> (1987) but said he really didn\u2019t want the part, he explained in a 2021 interview.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI felt so awkward all that day when we made that thing. It went on and on and on,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m so relieved they offered it to someone else. You really don\u2019t want to be the Bond that no one likes. That\u2019s a fate worse than death.\u201d (Timothy Dalton would play 007 for the first time in that film.)<\/p>\n

\n\tNeill described Dr. Grant in a 2001 interview as a man who has \u201ctremendous ambivalence. He knows Jurassic Park is a horrible place to be and knows there\u2019s nothing more dangerous than a dinosaur that is not behind bars. But because he lives and breathes dinosaurs, he finds them completely compelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe would return as Grant in Joe Johnston\u2019s Jurassic World III<\/em> (2001) and Colin Trevorrow\u2019s Jurassic World Dominion<\/em> (2022).<\/p>\n

\n\tHe wrote in his memoir that The Piano<\/em>, winner of the Palme d\u2019Or and three Oscars, was a \u201clonely\u201d job because Holly Hunter, who portrayed Ada, the wife his character abuses, \u201cwas of necessity remote\u201d (not surprising since Alisdair cuts off her finger in the movie). \u201cHappily,\u201d he added, \u201cJane is a very caring director for her cast and was always there to hug me when I was at my lowest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNeill also did lots of work (2002\u2019s Dirty Deeds<\/em>, 2008\u2019s Dean Spanley<\/em>, TV\u2019s Old School<\/em>, etc.) alongside his \u201cbrother from another mother,\u201d Aussie actor Bryan Brown.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis film r\u00e9sum\u00e9 also included Possession<\/em> (1981), Death in Brunswick<\/em> (1990), Carpenter\u2019s Memoirs of an Invisible Man<\/em> (1992), Country Life<\/em> (1994), Restoration<\/em> (1995), Snow White: A Tale of Terror <\/em>(1997), The Dish<\/em> (2000), The Zookeeper<\/em> (2001), Perfect Strangers<\/em> (2003), Skin<\/em> (2008), Daybreakers<\/em> (2009), The Hunter <\/em>(2011), Taika Waititi\u2018s Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/em> (2016) and, as a stage actor playing Odin, Thor Ragnarok<\/em> (2017) and Thor: Love and Thunder<\/em> (2022).<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1983, Neill bought some acreage in central Otago in New Zealand \u2014 this was \u201calways the land of my dreams; this was where we came for holidays when I was a kid,\u201d he said in 2020 \u2014 and launched his Two Paddocks vineyard.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t expect people to take me seriously, but I\u2019m determined that they respect my wine,\u201d he told the London Times<\/em> in 2014. \u201cA few weeks ago it won a trophy and two gold medals in London. I call that the \u2018up yours\u2019 factor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also was a comforting, entertaining presence during the pandemic, when he posted videos of him singing and playing the ukulele on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\n\tSurvivors include his children, Andrew, Tim and Elena, and six grandchildren.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter a long relationship with New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow (they met on The<\/em> Final Conflict<\/em>), he was married to Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe (they met on Dead Calm<\/em>) from 1989 until their 2017 divorce. More recently, he dated Laura Tingle, a political journalist for Australia\u2019s ABC network.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2022, a writer for the Sydney Morning Telegraph<\/em> noted that Neill is the least \u201ccelebrity\u201d celebrity there is.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI do hope I\u2019m not a celebrity because \u2026 I think it\u2019s two different jobs,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can be an actor \u2014 hopefully a very good actor \u2014 but it\u2019s another job to be a celebrity, and that\u2019s one you can sign up for or not. And I never signed up for that. I\u2019ve avoided that like the plague.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe winemaking thing is absolutely half my life and has been immensely rewarding, and it\u2019s very different from everything else that I do. I\u2019m sort of \u2026 half-farmer, half-thespian, if you like.\u201d<\/p>\n
