\n\tOver more than 23 years in the Senate, Lindsey Graham was one of the Hill\u2019s most well-known hawks and, in recent years, one of Donald Trump\u2018s staunchest defenders.<\/p>\n

The South Carolina Republican has also, for over a decade, been among the media and pop culture\u2019s favorite senators \u2014 a staple both of the Sunday morning talk shows and (without his participation) Saturday and other late-night comedy shows.<\/p>\n

A media-friendly quippiness, easygoing manner and zeal for arguing on behalf of U.S. military action made the 71-year-old, who\u00a0died suddenly on Saturday night\u00a0of unknown causes, a go-to for broadcast and cable-news bookers. The point was underscored by Graham\u2019s scheduled appearance on\u00a0Meet the Press\u00a0Sunday morning. Graham had just returned from a barnstorming trip to Turkey and Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and was expected to argue on behalf of more aggressive U.S. intervention in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East on the current-affairs show.<\/p>\n

Graham\u2019s manner and media enthusiasm gave him a national profile far bigger than many other legislators, especially from small and midsize Southern states. Most Americans could not pick Graham\u2019s fellow junior senators from neighboring North Carolina or Tennessee out of a lineup (Ted Budd and Bill Hagerty, for the curious). But Graham was instantly recognizable, as much for his face as his wry barbs, usually delivered in a downhome drawl.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this Watergate or Peyton Place?\u201d\u00a0the then-House member famously asked during the 1998 Bill Clinton impeachment hearings about the president\u2019s affair with intern Monica Lewinsky, arguing that his fellow Republicans on the Judiciary Committee needed to chill the hell out.\u00a0As a\u00a0Washington Post <\/em>profile\u00a0at the time noted:\u00a0\u201cLindsey Graham, a Twang of Moderation,\u201ddescribing his \u201csingular, humorous and highly quotable voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where other senators were either not interested or not able to present their case on television, Graham appeared there time and again.\u00a0Graham was a hawk on immigration and argued on cable news for months, eventually successfully, for the June passage of a\u00a0$70 billion package to fund ICE. He also appeared last year on CNN\u2019s\u00a0State of the Union<\/em>\u00a0criticizing\u00a0President Donald Trump\u2019s pardoning of those convicted for Jan. 6 offenses, a rare recent split with the president.<\/p>\n

Graham kept a close relationship with TV journalists.\u00a0\u201cHe was at the center of all of these debates in the U.S. Senate, not just right now but over the course of his tenure,\u201d\u00a0Meet the Press\u00a0<\/em>anchor Kristen Welker,\u00a0told\u00a0NBC South Carolina affiliate WYFF on Sunday morning, noting she had spoken to Graham multiple times in the past week.<\/p>\n

Graham also had a refreshing way of dropping the veil on the staid goings-on up Capitol Hill.
At one point in the fraught Bret Kavanaugh SCOTUS hearings in 2018 \u2014 after a vote by the Judiciary committee meant a delay in confirming the president\u2019s handpicked choice \u2014 Graham appeared in a media scrum on news coverage explaining the latest, which he closed with a droll \u201cNow I gotta go tell Trump.\u201d The moment offered a rare glimpse into the psyche of a Republican legislator contending with a mercurial president.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat same year, Graham appeared in an HBO documentary, John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls<\/em>,
one of three white-haired hawks (Connecticut Democrat Joe Lieberman was the third) who would work across party lines on foreign-policy causes. All three are now gone.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was a TV newsmagazine appearance that actually helped give Graham his political career. In 1984, eight years before he would run for the South Carolina House of Representatives, Graham was an unknown lawyer working for the Air Force when he defended a pilot accused of marijuana use. He argued that the military branch\u2019s drug-testing procedures were flawed. Graham won the case and ended up in a segment on\u00a060 Minutes\u00a0<\/em>talking about it. Political insiders were suddenly aware of the obscure lawyer.<\/p>\n

Graham\u2019s news-media profile soon turned into a frequent spotlighting on late-night comedy shows. First Kate McKinnon and then James Austin Johnson played him on Saturday Night Live,\u00a0<\/em>giving Graham the kind of notoriety many senators with dreams of higher office crave.\u00a0McKinnon memorably gave voice to him after Jan. 6, when she satirized the senator defending Trump. \u201cHe didn\u2019t attempt a coup. He is coo\u2019. He\u2019s the coo-est guy I know,\u201d she\u00a0riffed\u00a0in the 2021 sketch.<\/p>\n

A recent\u00a0SNL<\/em>\u00a0caricaturization came during the 2024 campaign, when Johnson played Graham in the cold open at a dinner of Republican lawmakers where everybody decried Trump\u2019s tactics and then\u00a0declared him\u00a0the greatest president since Lincoln.<\/p>\n

Graham\u2019s hawkishness often would draw the comedic attention of late-night hosts. Jon Stewart, in particular, made much of his fearmongering on foreign threats.\u00a0\u201cThe poor man lives his entire life trapped in The Blair Witch Project<\/em>,\u201d Stewart famously deadpanned in 2014 after Graham warned of imminent threats from ISIS.<\/p>\n

Stewart would routinely impersonate his drawl and homespun metaphors (as he did in \u00a02013 when Graham went after President Obama in a committee hearing), often with a heavy dose of subtext about Graham\u2019s personal life.<\/p>\n

(The unmarried senator, who had a\u00a0long record\u00a0of\u00a0opposing gay rights, was often the subject of personal-life speculation. The matter bubbled up in 2018 when Chelsea Handler insinuated in a tweet that it was time for him to come out,\u00a0prompting\u00a0him to tell TMZ<\/em>,\u00a0\u201cTo the extent that it matters, I\u2019m not gay.\u201d\u00a0SNL\u00a0<\/em>would sometimes\u00a0play off\u00a0the same subtext.)<\/p>\n

Stewart featured Graham in a segment as recently as January after the forced removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. \u201cYou\u2019re an old-hand at warmongering,\u201d he said. The host then\u00a0teed up\u00a0a clip of Graham, before ultimately making the joke about Trump and his unwillingness to get the memo that the messaging should be about American safety, not oil.<\/p>\n

Graham actually appeared himself on\u00a0The Daily Show\u00a0in the spring of 2016 during Trevor Noah\u2019s tenure, becoming\u00a0a rare conservative politician to occupy the guest seat. Graham\u00a0said\u00a0that presidential campaign season that he was endorsing Ted Cruz despite Cruz\u2019s unpopularity. \u201cThat tells you everything you need to know about Donald Trump,\u201d\u00a0Graham said, to a major reaction from the audience. \u201cI think his campaign is opportunistic,\u00a0race-baiting, religious bigotry, xenophobia,\u201d\u00a0Graham added. \u201cOther than that, he\u2019d be a good nominee.\u201d\u00a0The piece now plays like a Paley Center piece of archival footage, excavated from a distant era.<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert, a fellow South Carolinian, sometimes made Graham the target of his Late Show monologues, particularly the senator\u2019s flip-flopping on Trump \u2014 including the controversy late in his first term on an alleged quid pro quo the president made with Zelenskyy over military aid. \u201cDon\u2019t look away Lindsey,\u201d Colbert\u00a0repeated\u00a0in the popular bit.<\/p>\n

One of the wildest pieces of political viral video ever had Graham at the center. During a\u00a0feud\u00a0in the 2016 campaign,\u00a0Graham called Trump \u201ca jackass\u201d on\u00a0CNN\u00a0and\u00a0CBS This Morning<\/em>, leading the then-underdog candidate to dox Graham at a rally, giving out his cell phone number. Graham responded with a produced video that\u00a0showed him\u00a0destroying his cell phone in all kinds of creative ways, from dousing it in lighter fluid to pi\u00f1ata-ing with a stick. The move instantly gave the senator a profile with millions of people who never followed Congressional politics.<\/p>\n

Graham\u2019s death had numerous implications for South Carolina and the U.S. Senate, which now moves to a far more contested election in November after Graham, who\u00a0fended off an America First primary challenge last month, was expected to coast to a fifth term.<\/p>\n

But it also shakes up matters in a different way: removing a key relationship between casual news consumers and Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n
