\n\tShe\u2019s sitting atop the call sheet. She\u2019s tackling an iconic character. She\u2019s plastered across billboards in Hollywood. Oh, did we mention she\u2019s only 11 years old? <\/p>\n

\nAlice Halsey is taking on the Laura Ingalls mantle in Netflix\u2019s new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie<\/em>, which premiered July 9. \u201cThere\u2019s never really been a billboard of me before, so this is insane,\u201d the 11-year-old tells The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s mind-blowing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHalsey had the Little House<\/em> books in her house growing up, but she didn\u2019t read them until she got the audition for Laura. \u201cThey\u2019re so good,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel like Laura has this power to pull people in with all the details and the descriptions and everything. She definitely has a lot of power with her words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress took preparing for Laura seriously. She read the script a lot, listened to podcasts and read books related to late 19th century era in which the show is set. \u201cI just wanted to get a sense of who the character was, how I would play her,\u201d Halsey says. She\u2019s impressively earnest and focused for such a young star.<\/p>\n

\n\tBeing on set and in costume helped immerse herself in the world. Halsey says was happy the whole day getting to be Laura. \u201cThe prairie can be really wild,\u201d she says, recalling her time shooting. \u201cIt feels like it\u2019s all alive when the breeze goes through and everything moves. It\u2019s really magical. But it\u2019s also really unpredictable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHalsey experienced that unpredictability while the show filmed \u2014\u00a0including the opening scene of the series, where the audience sees her character for the first time, slingshot in hand.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis warm wind came in \u2014 it\u2019s called a Chinook wind and it comes in every year,\u201d Halsey says. \u201cIt hit us and tents were blowing and rows were flying away and everybody was freaking out. I was just cracking up because it was all the chaos. I just found it so funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHalsey felt a bit of pressure working on Little House<\/em>, as she is at the top of the call sheet. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a big responsibility,\u201d she says. She also can\u2019t stop raving about what a good environment the set was. She says everyone was putting their heart and soul into the project, which made them like one big family. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat definitely helped relieve some of the weight off of my shoulders,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty easy to act with all the people that I\u2019m acting with. They are all such amazing actors and so good at their work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHalsey is aware of the legacy of Little House on the Prairie<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s a story that\u2019s been beloved to so many people over generations and generations. Part of it is because of Laura\u2019s words and Laura\u2019s tale, but also it\u2019s relatable in every time,\u201d she says. \u201cNo matter what year it is, no matter what\u2019s going on at that time, there\u2019s always something in Little House<\/em> that\u2019s a comfort and relatable to what you\u2019re experiencing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHalsey already has a few years of acting experience under belt. Her first gig was Lessons in Chemistry<\/em> with Brie Larson, but where she got the most experience was on soap opera Days of Our Lives<\/em>. The 11-year-old credits her time on the show as helping her become the actress she is today.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere are so many amazing actors and actresses on that show that I was privileged enough to work with, and they\u2019re all really experienced,\u201d she says. The older actors helped her learn to find her light and to work under the show\u2019s impressively packed schedule. \u201cThere\u2019s one take per scene. That\u2019s all you get,\u201d she says. \u201cOn a regular show or movie, it\u2019ll be like you have multiple takes, and you have to be really good on each one because you don\u2019t know what the editor\u2019s going to pick.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe adds of her work on Days<\/em>, \u201cIt was a great learning experience. Having a schedule that\u2019s so fast-paced \u2014 you would shoot a couple episodes in one day \u2014 was very new to me. It kind of whipped me into shape.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNext, she\u2019s set to been alongside Viola Davis in Amazon MGM\u2019s Ally Clark<\/em>. \u201cActing with Viola is like stepping into another dimension. You look into her eyes and there\u2019s a whole other world inside them. It\u2019s almost surreal,\u201d she says. \u201cShe\u2019s also super funny and nice, and I love working with her.\u201d<\/p>\n
