\nBonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose iconic raspy voice turned tracks like \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart\u201d and \u201cHolding Out for a Hero\u201d into some of the biggest songs of the \u201880s, has died. She was 75.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBonnie\u2019s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,\u201d said a message posted on Tyler\u2019s official website. In May, the singer had been placed into an induced coma after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery.<\/p>\n

\n\tBorn Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales in 1951, Tyler first broke through in the late \u201870s thanks to her breakout hit \u201cLost In France\u201d off her debut album The World Starts Tonight <\/em>through RCA Records. She followed that album with 1978\u2019s Natural Force, <\/em>which included the lead single \u201cIt\u2019s a Heartache.\u201d (The album was released as It\u2019s a Heartbreak <\/em>in the U.S.) Both the single and the album went gold in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTyler released two more albums with RCA before signing with Columbia, where she released Faster Than the Speed of Night <\/em>in 1983. That album went platinum and featured what became her biggest hit, the Jim Steinman-penned \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart.\u201d \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart\u201d went platinum as well, also earning a Grammy nomination for best female pop vocal performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe and Steinman had another hit in 1984 with the ultra-dramatic \u201cHolding Out for a Hero,\u201d which was featured on the soundtrack for Footloose. <\/em>Since then it\u2019s become a near-ubiquitious needle drop across media, finding its way into other films like Shrek 2 <\/em>and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, <\/em>tv shows like Euphoria<\/em> and Regular Show <\/em>and numerous ads.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1986, Tyler followed up Faster Than the Speed of Night <\/em>with Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire<\/em>, which featured \u201cIf You Were a Woman (and I Was a Man),\u201d written by legendary songwriter Desmond Child. That song didn\u2019t beat her previous hits, though its melody lives on, as Child collaborated with Bon Jovi for a reworked version, becoming one of the biggest rock songs of all time with \u201cYou Give Love A Bad Name.\u201d (That melody was repurposed again with Ava Max\u2019s hit song \u201cKings and Queens,\u201d in 2020.)<\/p>\n

\n\tTyler held steady releasing music through the early 2000s, and in 2013, she represented the U.K. in the Eurovision song contest with her song \u201cBelieve in Me\u201d off her album Rocks and Honey. <\/em>Tyler would release 18 studio albums in her career, with her final coming in 2021 with The Best Is Yet to Come<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe is survived by husband Robert Sullivan. The two married in 1973.<\/p>\n
