\n\tI\u2019ve always said that Apple TV\u2019s output looks better if you focus exclusively on the successes and pretend, like Apple TV does, that the failures or mediocrities simply don\u2019t exist. Remember the Billy Crystal drama Before<\/em>? Neither does Apple. But I probably need to stop saying it, because holy cow Apple TV had itself an Emmy nominations morning, with 87 nominations across the drama and comedy categories, including series nominations for Pluribus<\/em>, Slow Horses<\/em>, Your Friends & Neighbors<\/em>, Margo\u2019s Got Money Troubles<\/em>, Shrinking<\/em> and Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tYes,\u00a0Your Friends & Neighbors\u00a0<\/em>got an Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series and nothing else, a strange anomaly, though far from the day\u2019s strangest anomaly. But Apple had such a successful morning that\u00a0Pluribus<\/em>, a show initially promoted entirely as a one-woman showcase for Rhea Seehorn, received four acting nominations, for Seehorn, Karolina Wydra, Carlos-Manuel Vesga and even Jeff Hiller, last year\u2019s comedy supporting actor winner, whose total screen time in\u00a0Pluribus\u00a0<\/em>was\u2026minimal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe only thing Emmy voters love more than Apple TV shows are actors from\u00a0The Pitt<\/em>\u00a0and guest actresses from\u00a0Hacks<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u2019ve got countless points of incredulity \u2014 a nomination for Amazon\u2019s Heads of State<\/em> is the latest piece of evidence that the original movie for television category is outmoded and probably needs to be scrapped \u2014 and irritation, but where do you want to start, Angie? Perhaps some points of happiness?<\/p>\n

\nANGIE HAN:<\/strong> Honestly, Apple\u2019s dominance in this year\u2019s nominations might be one of my points of happiness. The streamer still has plenty of middling shows \u2014 some of which, if we\u2019re being brutally honest, are among the nominees \u2014 but it also put out some of my favorite shows of the past year.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong the announcements that made me happy-clap: All the love for Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em>, but especially for Kate O\u2019Flynn\u2019s precise and hilarious work as Patricia! All the love for Margo\u2019s Got Money Troubles<\/em>, but especially for Nick Offerman\u2019s achingly soulful turn as Jinx! (He also got a well-deserved nod for Netflix\u2019s Death by Lightning<\/em>! Double yay!) All the love for Pluribus<\/em> \u2014 I expected Rhea Seehorn (and God, it feels good to say that after years of grumbling at her going under-recognized for Better Call Saul<\/em>) but was thrilled to see several of her costars make the cut as well.<\/p>\n

\n\tOutside of Apple\u2019s lineup, I was pleased that the cast of HBO Max\u2019s The Pitt<\/em> got their due, even if part of me gets a little grumpy when one show dominates the acting categories too thoroughly. (At least it\u2019s not as bad as those years when Emmy voters seemed to believe Succession<\/em> and The White Lotus<\/em> were the only dramas in existence.) And to see HBO\u2019s DTF St. Louis<\/em> make such a strong showing in an otherwise pretty weak limited series field.<\/p>\n

\n\tThen there were the ones that just sort of made me laugh, like Connor Storrie scoring a \u201cWe\u2019re so sorry the Emmy rules won\u2019t let us nominate Heated Rivalry<\/em>\u201d nod for hosting Saturday Night Live<\/em>. Or All\u2019s Fair<\/em>, quite possibly the most dreadful show I\u2019ve seen in the past year, scoring two nominations (albeit in makeup and hairstyling, two very specific areas in which the show was fine).<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat were some of the announcements that delighted or amused you?<\/p>\n

\nFIENBERG:\u00a0<\/strong>I can stick to happiness, sure! At least short-term. Trust me, it won\u2019t last.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut yes, after all those years of \u201cHow are Emmy voters ignoring Rhea Seehorn and Nick Offerman?!?\u201d post-nomination conversations, it\u2019s wonderful to see Seehorn and Offerman as almost \u201cWhat? You think we\u2019d forget them?\u201d no-brainers. (Carrie Coon, never nominated for\u00a0The Leftovers<\/em>\u00a0has now similarly become an Emmy favorite, with her second\u00a0The Gilded Age<\/em>\u00a0nod.)<\/p>\n

\n\tI forgot to mention Miriam Shor among the\u00a0Pluribus<\/em>\u00a0nominees. What? No room for Samba Schutte, Emmy voters? But not every show gets to be\u00a0The Pitt<\/em>. I guess it was nice to see Patrick Ball, Gerran Howell, Fiona Dourif and Taylor Dearden getting the nominations they deserved last year, though if we\u2019re talking strictly season two, leaving out Isa Briones and Supriya Ganesh is peculiar. Really, the\u00a0Pitt\u00a0<\/em>actors I was most pleased for were guest stars Tina Ivlev as the sexual assault patient and Ernest Harden Jr. as Louie,\u00a0<\/em>plus Brittany Allen, whom HBO didn\u2019t even submit for consideration.<\/p>\n

\n\tI was more pleased with all the nominations for DTF St. Louis<\/em>, a show I was worried might prove too tonally challenging for voters; it received nominations for nearly its entire ensemble, with Joy Sunday and Richard Jenkins joining more obvious accolades for Linda Cardellini, David Harbour and Jason Bateman, who has received six additional Emmy nominations in the past 30 minutes, not for anything in particular, just because Emmy voters love Jason Bateman.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking of HBO shows I worried would perplex Emmy voters, the writing and directing nominations for\u00a0The Chair Company\u00a0<\/em>made me smile.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther happy surprises? Yahya Abdul-Mateen II\u2019s nomination for\u00a0Wonder Man<\/em> was the Disney+ series\u2019 only recognition, but it was very worthy. Kudos to Salli Richardson Whitfield, with a pair of directing nominations for\u00a0Task\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Gilded Age<\/em>. Michelle Pfeiffer would have been a worthy double-nominee, but it was good to see her\u00a0Margo\u2019s Got Money Trouble<\/em>\u00a0nod as a reminder of how great the\u00a0Married to the Mob<\/em>\u00a0star is when she gets to give human shadings within a broadly comic performance. And, given that she\u2019s also hosting the Emmys telecast, it was nice to see Mariska Hargitay add \u201cEmmy nominated director\u201d to her resum\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tI think, however, that I\u2019ve run out of happy-making observations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLet\u2019s start my irritation with Cailee Spaeny, legitimately my favorite member of the Beef<\/em> season two ensemble for a performance that became increasingly funny and increasingly dark as the series went along, but the only member of the core ensemble who didn\u2019t receive a nomination. Big miss.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore I meander off on various extended rants, where would you like to begin your complaints?<\/p>\n

\nHAN:<\/strong> Given the Emmys\u2019 general lack of enthusiasm for Sterlin Harjo\u2019s Reservation Dogs<\/em> \u2014 by our estimation one of the finest shows of this century \u2014 I guess it\u2019s not exactly shocking that his follow-up, The Lowdown<\/em>, was totally blanked. But still! You\u2019re telling me five-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, in a starring role that fits him like a broken-in cowboy boot, couldn\u2019t move the needle? Nothing for Emmy favorite Peter Dinklage\u2019s pitch-perfect guest role? Or for previous Emmy winner Keith David\u2019s excellent supporting work?<\/p>\n

\n\tI could go on about The Lowdown<\/em> specifically, but let\u2019s move on to other shows. I was similarly unsurprised but disappointed at HBO\u2019s Industry<\/em> getting completely shut out yet again, despite only getting sharper, darker and more ambitious with its fourth season. I was hoping Marisa Abela and Myha\u2019la\u2019s rising careers might get their original breakthrough roles here some attention, at the very least. And while I don\u2019t think NBC\u2019s The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins<\/em> ever had a great shot, it would have been nice to see Emmy voters remember there are network shows besides Abbott Elementary<\/em>. Oh, and it really bums me out that Netflix\u2019s laugh-out-loud funny and profoundly moving Long Story Short<\/em> got nothing, even if, again, no one seemed to know it existed.<\/p>\n

\n\tSlightly more surprising to me was that Netflix\u2019s Lord of the Flies<\/em> only scored a couple of (well earned) nods in the sound categories. In addition to its impressive cast of young and undiscovered talents, its sumptuous and striking visuals made it perhaps the best-looking Netflix show since 2023\u2019s Ripley<\/em>. So many shows look downright awful these days; we need to reward the ones that make a real effort on that front! At least FX\u2019s similarly gorgeous Alien: Earth<\/em> scored in the cinematography and VFX categories, even if it strikes me as a shame that its cast \u2014 including a mesmerizing Sydney Chandler and a slippery Babou Ceesay \u2014 went without.<\/p>\n

\n\tI could probably keep going, but I\u2019ll stop before I get too nitpicky. What are some other omissions \u2014 or inclusions! \u2014 that frustrated you?<\/p>\n

\nFIENBERG:\u00a0<\/strong>Nah. You covered most of \u2019em. I could underline the shows and performances you mentioned, but in the time it would take me to complain more, Jason Bateman will have received between five and 10 additional nominations, and that\u2019s not a risk I\u2019m prepared to take.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u2019m just finding it harder and harder to ascribe authority to a group of voters who have now snubbed Ethan Hawke in\u00a0The Good Lord Bird<\/em>,\u00a0Reservation Dogs<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Lowdown<\/em>. I\u2019m finding it harder and harder to respect the judgement of voters who think the task of casting the two biggest stars on TV in\u00a0The Beast in Me<\/em>\u00a0was worthier of recognition than finding a sprawling cast of wholly unknown juvenile stars in\u00a0Lord of the Flies.\u00a0<\/em>I\u2019m finding it harder and harder to defend or critique a system in which, by my own judgement, at least half the shows in the drama field are absolutely comedies and several of the comedies are probably dramas (though not\u00a0Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em>, which is definitely a comedy). And, again, you get a nomination for\u00a0Heads of State<\/em>\u00a0because there\u2019s some fear of dissolving a field that no longer reflects the way television works in 2026. And this is without getting into my annual \u201cIf Emmy voters watched Dark Winds<\/em>, Zahn McClarnon would have four Emmy nominations and instead he has none\u201d rant.<\/p>\n

\n\tEmmy voters are silly and don\u2019t watch very much television. Emmy categorizations and classifications are silly and fundamentally broken. I\u2019m sure we have better things to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n
