Sharon Horgan brought star power and insights into her upcoming HBO series Youth<\/em> to Karlovy Vary\u2019s KVIFF Industry Days\u00a0program\u00a0of the festival on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

She appeared just after a session with The Sopranos<\/em>\u00a0creator\u00a0David Chase at the industry strand of the\u00a060th edition\u00a0of the\u00a0Karlovy Vary\u00a0International\u00a0Film Festival\u00a0(KVIFF) in the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n

With HBO being a topic at both keynote appearances, Horgan also faced a business question, namely what may happen to HBO after Paramount Skydance acquires its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. \u201cWho knows?\u201d the multihyphenate replied. \u201cYou just don\u2019t know. I\u2019m hopeful that nothing changes with HBO, because it would be kind of crazy. It\u2019s such an iconic brand. It is the ultimate premium streamer. I don\u2019t know why you would want to interfere with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Director and cinematographer Andrij Parekh (House of the Dragon<\/em>, Succession<\/em>) shared a similar thought: \u201cI just hope that they have the wisdom to leave it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two creatives appeared in an on-stage conversation entitled \u201cThe Cinematic Series: Storytelling in the Age of Streaming,\u201d moderated by Deadline\u2019s Diana Lodderhose.<\/p>\n

One audience member asked Horgan on Wednesday if her Apple TV series Bad Sisters<\/em> could return for a third season one day, and she didn\u2019t rule it out. Maybe \u201cin the future, at some point \u2013 I\u2019m always having ideas for stories,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just that at the moment the focus is the HBO show,\u201d namely Youth<\/em>. Horgan shared about it: \u201cThere\u2019s a small element of autobiography to it \u2013 it\u2019s a little more similar to Pulling<\/em> and Catastrophe<\/em>, \u2026 and it\u2019s about being a woman of a certain age \u2013 that\u2019s inspired by me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that the comedy show is \u201cabout the sandwich generation as well. It\u2019s about a certain time in your life where your parents are becoming more elderly, your children are refusing to leave home, you\u2019re caring for everyone, but how do you care for yourself when you\u2019re in that situation?\u201d Horgan said the series is set to debut in September.<\/p>\n

Parekh was also asked what he is working on, mentioning a Netflix series called The Retrievals<\/em>, which the streamer unveiled in May and \u201cwhich is shooting this fall.\u201d He explained: \u201cIt\u2019s actually shockingly uncommercial, but it\u2019s a true story of a nurse at a Yale hospital that was replacing fentanyl in women\u2019s IVF injections [to feed her opioid addiction] with saline, so the women went through an extraordinary amount of pain. And they were sort of gaslit by the hospital and the whole IVF system into believing that they were not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Written and executive produced by Molly Smith Metzler (Sirens<\/em>, Maid<\/em>), the show is adapted from the Susan Burton podcast of the same name. About his roles on the show, Parekh highlighted: \u201cI am shooting the pilot as DOP and then directing two episodes.\u201d<\/p>\n
