The Sopranos<\/em>\u00a0creator\u00a0David Chase\u00a0drew a huge crowd at the\u00a060th edition\u00a0of the\u00a0Karlovy Vary\u00a0International\u00a0Film Festival\u00a0(KVIFF) in the Czech Republic on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

A day after discussing with select reporters at KVIFF one thing he\u2019d change about the enduring hit drama today and sharing insights into his new HBO limited series project, Project: MKUltra<\/em>, based on John Lisle\u2019s nonfiction book\u00a0Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA and the Tragedy of MKULTRA<\/em>, the seven-time Emmy winner took the stage at the\u00a0expanded and\u00a0broadened\u00a0KVIFF\u00a0Industry Days\u00a0program\u00a0of the festival.<\/p>\n

The title of his keynote appearance, moderated by Deadline Hollywood<\/em>\u2018s Zac Ntim: \u201cThe Sopranos<\/em> and Beyond: David Chase on Storytelling, Television, Film, and the Future of Creative Risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about whether Americans falling in love with the anti-hero character that Tony Soprano and Walter White helped pave the way for desensitizing Americans and had an impact on the political state of the country, hinting at whether U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s two election victories may have been affected by Americans\u2019 view on what is cool and right. \u201cWell, we have a convicted felon as a president,\u201d Chase said. But \u201cI don\u2019t think that the object of The Sopranos<\/em> was to say it\u2019s okay, it\u2019s cool if you\u2019re corrupt. I don\u2019t think that was the point. So, I don\u2019t think that exactly tracks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Discussing the state of Hollywood, Chase on Wednesday quoted Christopher McQuarrie, the writer of The Usual Suspect<\/em>s. \u201cHe left Hollywood, and he said the whole thing is run by only two things: greed and fear, and he\u2019s absolutely right,\u201d Chase offered. \u201cFor whatever reason we\u2019re going back to greed and fear. I think that\u2019s just the natural state of things.\u201d <\/p>\n

He also shared: \u201cI\u2019ve never really understood the film business. I think the profit margins are like 6 percent. Why do you want to be in that business, especially if you\u2019re afraid you\u2019re going to lose money? \u2026 Wouldn\u2019t you be better off selling running shoes?\u201d<\/p>\n

Recalling his early days working for U.S. network television, Chase said: \u201cTheir business was the selling of advertising time, and so they had these shows that came second to the advertising. All there was very, very strict. It was like it\u2019s like working for the politburo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about the ad focus of networks, he said to laughs from the audience: \u201cThe business of those people was to sell products, corn flakes and tampons, and cars.\u201d His advice to anyone facing worries about restrictions to creative ideas from networks or streamers: \u201cAll you can do is just do what you want and not listen to them.\u201d <\/p>\n

Chase even recalled pitching The Sopranos<\/em> to long-time CBS boss Leslie Moonves, who had some problems with Tony Soprano. He asked Chase if he was \u201cmarried to this Prozac thing?\u201d he recalled. Chase said yes. \u201cAnd he has to go to a therapist?\u201d Yes. The result: \u201cWe left\u201d the meeting, the creator recalled. Why was this a hang-up for Moonves. \u201cIt made Tony weak and sick and not heroic,\u201d Chase explained. It made him \u201ccomplicated.\u201d His takeaway was that \u201cambiguity is \u201cthe worst\u201d thing to pitch.<\/p>\n

Even big-name creators like Chase himself don\u2019t always get their way. A project he wanted to do at HBO \u201cfell apart on money,\u201d he shared. And then he did The Many Saints of Newark<\/em>, which HBO positioned as a prequel to The Sopranos<\/em>, which he didn\u2019t view that way,\u201d he explained, adding that he really wanted to make a crime B-movie.<\/p>\n

Why is he interested in the topic of how the U.S. considered weaponizing LSD, which Project: MKUltra<\/em> explores. \u201cMost likely because I took LSD when I was younger,\u201d Chase said to much laughter. \u201cI was not an acid head, but I took it eight or nine times, 10 times, and I believe that it changed my life.\u201d He called LSD \u201ca spiritual experience, and it\u2019s a party.\u201d <\/p>\n

He has also been working on a related film, which he described as \u201ca family story,\u201d in addition to the series, sharing: \u201cIt can be two different stories,\u201d and it\u2019s not so much about LSD but \u201cabout consciousness.\u201d For the film, \u201cwe don\u2019t have a distributor\u201d yet, sharing that he expects to first have to make it and then find one.<\/p>\n
