The first one was <em>Harold &amp; Kumar Go to White Castle<\/em>. The second one came out and was made right before <em>The Hurt Locker <\/em>was made, and they both came out around the same time. And everyone sort of was scratching their head, saying, \u2018How can you make <em>Harold &amp; Kumar<\/em>, which has a lot of really low-brow fart jokes and is a stoner comedy, and <em>The Hurt Locker<\/em>, which is a really high-minded, very intense war film?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His answer was simpler than anyone expected. \u201cIn my mind I was always thinking they are kind of the same movie. I love low-brow stoner comedies, and I also love really high-brow war films, so to me it was just working on something that I loved. I really loved both of those movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the status of the fourth <em>Harold &amp; Kumar <\/em>movie, Shapiro shared that the screenplay is currently being written. \u201cEverybody\u2019s back,\u201d he added. \u201cHopefully we\u2019ll be shooting soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Harold &amp; Kumar<\/em> franchise had its share of behind-the-scenes casting battles, Shapiro revealed. \u201cThere were different directors on each movie, and they are comedies, so you want to reach as broad an audience as possible. So there are a couple of people in some of those three movies that the directors did not want. I can\u2019t tell you who they are, but one of them ended up being just a remarkable surprise. And then there was another one, an underground comedy star that the director wanted that the studio refused to put in, and we somehow won that battle on that person. And it\u2019s just one of the funniest moments in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The broader lesson, he said, cuts both ways. \u201cMovies are a series of compromises. And often the most exciting things come out of a compromise\u201d \u2014 a dynamic he\u2019s seen play out in casting as much as anywhere else. \u201cI made some movies over the years where the financier or the studio said you have to cast this person. It\u2019s often in a supporting role, and you think this is a terrible idea \u2014 it\u2019s a YouTube star or it\u2019s a social media star. Sometimes that terrible casting idea ends up being something that\u2019s really exciting and pops, and people enjoy the movie because of it, even though that\u2019s in total opposition to what the director\u2019s vision was. So it cuts both ways. It\u2019s weird \u2014 sometimes the studio is right. I hate to say it, but it\u2019s true. And then sometimes, more often than not, the filmmaker is right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recent breakout success of <em>Backrooms<\/em> and <em>Obsession<\/em> only deepened his optimism \u2014 and pointed to something bigger. \u201cIt\u2019s Gen Z making movies for Gen Z,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can get the younger people back to the movie theater. I just think it creates a healthy ecosystem. So I\u2019m feeling weirdly positive, bullish about the state of the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=3191\">\u2018Dutton Ranch\u2019 Star Natalie Alyn Lind Unpacks \u2018Yellowstone\u2019 Sequel\u2019s Finale Bombshells<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a look at other takeaways from the session:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Producer\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>Voice<\/strong><br \/>\u201cWe always talk about a director\u2019s voice, but there is also the producer\u2019s voice,\u201d Asher said. \u201cI am very focused on filmmaker-driven projects,\u201d no matter what genre, she shared, highlighting her interest in specific voices trumps other considerations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning from Nick Nolte<br \/><\/strong>Shapiro used to work for Nick Nolte as an assistant, which he called \u201cmy film school.\u201d He shared that Nolte has \u201cthis approach of the actor as being in the service of the director.\u201d That includes situations where you don\u2019t agree with the filmmaker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pros and Cons of a Decisive Director<\/strong><br \/>A director\u2019s decisiveness can be an asset, but Shapiro admitted it has also left him with a \u201cgraveyard of projects\u201d that never got made because filmmakers wouldn\u2019t budge on casting. \u201cMovies are a series of compromises,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd often the most exciting things come out of a compromise.\u201d That\u2019s a lesson he\u2019s learned firsthand working with Kathryn Bigelow. \u201cWhen I work with Kathryn, it\u2019s a very easy dynamic, because she\u2019s so in control as a filmmaker that there\u2019s a certain safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pivoting<\/strong><br \/>Asher lauded her frequent director partner Chlo\u00e9 Zhao for being \u201csomeone who has the real strength of knowing what they want but also has the ability to pivot,\u201d which is great for getting projects done. \u201cShe is very good at pivoting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rare pivot is needed when a producer and director get a bigger budget than expected, such as the $5 million that Zhao and Asher got for <em>Nomadland<\/em>. \u201cWe were like, \u2018Oh my God, what are we going to spend all that money on\u2019\u201d the producer recalled. \u201cWe could make five movies. We were under budget, so we managed to figure out. One of the ways was to pay people really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How about AI?<\/strong><br \/>\u201cI know it is coming, and I\u2019ll use it,\u201d said Asher. \u201cI just want to make good movies. I\u2019m very excited about young filmmakers. That is where the revolution will come if we need a revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro has been working with AI companies to learn about the technology, and his experience is that most people at AI companies say the tech will not fully replace humans.
