A Court Will Decide If That\u2019s for One Movie \u2014 Or the Whole Series<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It featured a selection of literary works from Central and Europe deemed suitable for film or TV adaptations. \u201cOur long-term ambition with Book-to-Screen at KVIFF is to become a true Central-Eastern European IP market that helps develop dialogue between the film and publishing industries and create a more transparent environment for adaptation rights in the region,\u201d said Hugo Ros\u00e1k, the head of KVIFF Film Industry Programs.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, eight original literary IPs took the spotlight in the Czech spa town\u2019s Imperial Spa, which mixes traditional and modern architecture, similar to how the books in focus cover the past, present and future. Here\u2019s <em>THR<\/em>\u2018s closer look at the book pitches for potential screen adaptations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Cupid at the Kremlin Wall<\/em>\u00a0(Georgia)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>Author: Aka\u00a0Morchiladze\u00a0<br \/>Genre: historical drama, detective novel\u00a0<br \/>Publisher:\u00a0Sulakauri\u00a0Publishing\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Synopsis: \u201cThe historical drama\u00a0<em>Cupid at the Kremlin Wall<\/em>\u00a0takes place during a tragic train journey across Georgia, at the height of the Stalinist terror in the 1930s. Historian Aka\u00a0Morchiladze, its author, is an accomplished writer who has over 30 novels published in 15 countries. He has written several screenplays, and his\u00a0previous\u00a0book\u00a0<em>Journey to Karabakh<\/em>\u00a0was adapted into a film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: Publisher Nuka Gambashidze described the protagonist, a former revolutionary who is owning up to past mistakes, as \u201ca woman of action who is stubborn.\u201d She is also restless, even though she is trying to stay undercover. Fiction and historical reality intertwine as real-life characters show up in the novel, including such filmmakers as Sergei Eisenstein and Raisa Vasilyeva. \u201cIt really shows the effect the Great Purge had on filmmakers,\u201d the publisher explained. Stalin also features, and \u201che is shown in two different lights,\u201d she teased.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Playing Wolf\u00a0<\/em>(Czech Republic)\u00a0<br \/><\/strong>Author: Zuzana\u00a0R\u00edhov\u00e1\u00a0<br \/>Genre: folk horror, psychological thriller\u00a0<br \/>Publisher: Argo\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Synopsis: <em>Playing Wolf\u00a0<\/em>is \u201ca village novel you want to read in the safety of the city,\u201d KVIFF says. \u201cThis folk-horror thriller by writer and literary scholar Zuzana\u00a0R\u00edhov\u00e1, former head of Czech Studies at Oxford, was successfully published in France and the USA by \u00c9ditions du\u00a0Seuil\u00a0and Catapult, respectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: A couple moves from the city to a place in nature. One key character gets filmed with mobile phones while she is dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood, the pitching session revealed. \u201cThey come to a remote place in nature, but things just go down from there,\u201d said publisher Gabriela Kiszov\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The River Odyssey of Kora from Willow Meadow<\/em>\u00a0(Poland)\u00a0<br \/><\/strong>Author: Adam\u00a0Robi\u0144ski\u00a0<br \/>Genre: children\u2019s literature\u00a0<br \/>Publisher:\u00a0Widnokr\u0105g\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Synopsis: \u201cA representative of children\u2019s literature, the Polish title\u00a0<em>The River Odyssey of Kora From Willow Meadow<\/em>\u00a0by Adam\u00a0Robi\u0144ski tells the story of a young beaver named Kora with ecological relevance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: \u201cThis is a coming-of-age story and an unexpected formative journey of personal growth,\u201d publisher Anna Nowacka-Devillard explained, highlighting such themes as courage and resilience. \u201cAt the end of it, she is no longer the same young beaver she was at the beginning.\u201d And she argued that there are \u201cechoes of Frodo\u201d Baggins in this \u201cuniversal\u201d story. There is no human in the book beyond one young boy, signaling how the story cherishes nature.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Queen of Hearts<\/em>\u00a0(Moldova)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>Author: Iulian Ciocan\u00a0<br \/>Genre: dystopian novel\u00a0<br \/>Publisher:\u00a0Polirom\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Synopsis: \u201c<em>Queen of Hearts<\/em>, a dystopian satire by Moldovan author Iulian Ciocan, explores an ever-expanding, all-consuming crater in the middle of post-communist\u00a0Chi\u0219in\u0103u, Moldova.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=3171\">Sarajevo Film Festival Unveils New Award, the Prix Cineplexx, Spotlighting Necessity of Theatrical Releases<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: A corrupt politician \u2026 who is very happy to be pocketing money,\u201d explained literary agent Livia Stoia. \u201cHe built up his whole life on bribes,\u201d until he hurts his ankle when stepping into a hole. As a result, he experiences nightmares that the capital city Chi\u0219in\u0103u that he lives in will be swallowed by it. \u201cHe decides to go to a fortune teller, who tells him to find The Queen of Hearts to get redemption,\u201d she explained. \u201cOtherwise, this hole will swallow the whole capital.\u201d Calling the book a \u201chilarious post-Communist satire,\u201d the publisher warned the audience not to expect a happy ending, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Aspic Bistro<\/em>\u00a0(Lithuania)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>Author:\u00a0Ieva\u00a0Dumbryt\u0117\u00a0<br \/>Genre: magic-realism satire\u00a0<br \/>Publisher:\u00a0Kitos\u00a0knygos\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Synopsis: \u201c<em>Aspic Bistro<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Ieva\u00a0Dumbryt\u0117, set in a surreal, almost Orwellian-controlled kitchen environment, won several awards in her native Lithuania, including the prize for the Most Creative Book of the Year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: The protagonist is a history student who becomes the first university graduate in his family, film rights agent Benas B\u00e8rantas told KVIFF. But he has no \u201cproper job, so he feels like a failure,\u201d just like his parents do, he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s a very harsh and almost-Orwellian kitchen,\u201d he said, mentioning that \u201csurvival matters more than comfort.\u201d But a woman brings \u201ca glimpse of hope\u201d to his life, until she may turn into a pig. The tone was, not surprisingly, described with such words as \u201cabsurd\u201d and \u201cdark humor.\u201d B\u00e8rantas\u2019 closing pitch: \u201cIt\u2019s like the film <em>Delicatessen<\/em> in an Eastern European kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The True Way Out\u00a0<\/em>(Czech Republic)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>Author:\u00a0Patrik\u00a0Banga\u00a0<br \/>Genre: coming-of-age, autobiography\u00a0<br \/>Publisher: Host\u00a0<br \/>\u201c<em>True Way Out<\/em>, journalist\u00a0Patrik\u00a0Banga\u2019s memoir about growing up in a Roma community in Prague\u2019s\u00a0Zi\u017ekov\u00a0neighborhood\u00a0in the 1990s, won the Magnesia\u00a0Litera\u00a0award for best debut in 2023.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: Publisher Michaela Dermauw highlighted such themes as poverty, racism, rejection and police brutality that the book explores. The story reflects the author\u2019s childhood experiences, she explained. But it\u2019s not all dark and pessimistic. After all, \u201che is also describing the way out of this misery,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is an incredible story of a man who never gave up. \u2026 It gives you hope. \u2026 And it\u2019s full of music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Zone<\/em>\u00a0(Slovakia)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>Author: Daniel\u00a0Majling\u00a0<br \/>Genre: graphic novel\u00a0<br \/>Publisher:\u00a0Brak\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Synopsis: In this graphic novel\u00a0by the author and playwright, \u201ca mysteriously hostile space takes on the title role itself. Absurd characters, dark humor, striking visuals, and cult status among Central European comics fans (the novel received the Czech Muriel Prize) all contribute to its strong adaptation potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: Where is the story in the post-communist era set? \u201cIn the poorest part of Slovakia,\u201d said publisher Franti\u0161ek Mal\u00edk, explaining that there are people with \u201canti-superpowers.\u201d For example?! \u201cDepression is inheritable. And some people can kill you just by talking.\u201d The protagonist is \u201ca oser comic writer and artist who lives by himself and has only one friend who disappears.\u201d So, he goes looking for him. How does Mal\u00edk describe the protagonist? \u201cHe is absurd and melancholic. I might call him the Slovak Woody Allen \u2013 but from the better first half of his career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Amadoka<\/em>\u00a0(Ukraine)\u00a0<br \/><\/strong>Author: Sophia\u00a0Andrukhovych\u00a0<br \/>Genre: historical\/war novel\u00a0<br \/>Publisher: The Old Lion Publishing House\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Synopsis: The war in the Donbas serves as the starting point in\u00a0<em>Amadoka<\/em>, \u201ca novel that combines an intimate human story with the vast historical trauma of Eastern Europe in a deeply cinematic way.\u201d Writer Sophia\u00a0Andrukhovych\u00a0won the International Hermann Hesse\u00a0Prize\u00a02024 for it. Her debut novel\u00a0<em>Felix Austria<\/em>\u00a0won the BBC Ukrainian Book of the Year award and was adapted into a film titled\u00a0<em>Devoted<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pitch highlights: \u201cAmadoka is one of the key metaphors, and it symbolizes erased memory, hidden or lost identity, and lost generations,\u201d said publisher Ivan Fedechko. The book addresses Stalin\u2019s repression, famine, the Holocaust and the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine, among other defining traumas of Ukrainian history.
