For the second time in 2026, a U.S. moment of television feelgood unity has become an infight-y referendum on the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

The reason for that? The Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Mostly.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s successful gambit this weekend of asking for \u201ca review\u201d from FIFA president Gianni Infantino of the red card given U.S. striker Folarin Balogun has, not surprisingly, caused everyone you\u2019d expect to get upset to get upset and everyone you\u2019d think would defend the move to defend the move.<\/p>\n

It combines to make what had been a non-partisan story of the USMNT\u2019s success \u00a0\u2014 they play Belgium in the Round of 16 Monday night on Fox and Telemundo in what will be a ratings extravaganza \u2014 a partisan story, through no fault of the team\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just like the U.S. Men\u2019s Hockey team gold-medal win over Canada at the Olympics in February became a partisan story, through no fault of the team.<\/p>\n

As you no doubt know, the U.S. Men\u2019s National Team has been an incredibly feelgood story at the World Cup after going 2-1 in Group play and then beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 despite playing down a man for much of the second half.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It has become a feelgood story with genuinely good guys and a melting-pot multiracial squad \u2014 coach Mauricio Pochettino from Argentina, star winger Christina Pulisic from Pennsylvania, attacking midfielder Malik Tillman raised in Germany, striker Balogun a British-Nigerian (born in Brooklyn while his parents were on a trip here), Mexican American striker Ricardo Pepi and right-back Tim Weah, who\u2019s a Florida-raised child of the man who would become the Liberian president. The team also features the World Cup\u2019s only known Jewish player in keeper Matt Turner. Not for nothing did the Bosnia match\u00a0garner 33 million viewers on Fox and Telemundo, the most for a U.S. soccer broadcast by the length of three pitches.<\/p>\n

As you no doubt also know, Trump didn\u2019t like that Balogun was given a red card\u00a0in the Bosnia game for what looked like an inadvertent ankle-trample on a contested ball. Trump soon learned \u00a0(in fairness, like many Americans) that it meant a suspension for the Belgium game. So this weekend he called Infantino, who had given him a \u201cPeace Prize\u201d recently and had clearly been playing the Trump-obeyance game. (Haven\u2019t these people heard of backchanneling?) The decision was soon reversed under so-called \u201cArticle 27,\u201d which FIFA reserves for such moments announced Sunday.<\/p>\n

By Monday morning the battle lines were drawn, and you could chalk them without even opening your eyes.\u00a0Europe was up in arms. UEFA, the European soccer federation, called the reversal\u00a0\u201cincomprehensible and unjustifiable.\u201d The Norwegian coach\u00a0called it\u00a0a big mistake.\u00a0Belgium coach Rudi Garcia quipped\u00a0\u201cI didn\u2019t know that\u00a0July 5\u00a0was\u00a0April 1.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the other side, Infantino threw up his hands\u00a0more dramatically than Messi after a challenge and said that \u201cFIFA\u2019s judicial bodies are independent.\u201d\u00a0Trump said\u00a0\u201cI didn\u2019t think it was a foul.\u201d And\u00a0Trump supporter and Fox Sports commentator Alexi \u201cSoccer President\u201d Lalas\u00a0went on\u00a0Fox News to say, literally, \u201ctake it up with FIFA.\u201d<\/p>\n

(That the whole thing is playing out on Fox News sister unit Fox Sports only adds to the stickiness; will Euro-centric commentators like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry join their continental siblings in protest Monday night or be gently encouraged to can it?)<\/p>\n

The insertion of Trump into what should have been a continued feelgood story (\u201cTrump may have just broken the World Cup,\u201d\u00a0 New York <\/em>magazine\u00a0said) elicited shudders and eyerolls for any fan who\u2019s been craving a great story. Just as it did when Kash Patel showed up to chug in the men\u2019s hockey locker room in Milan and then Trump invited the club to the State of the Union for a gold-medal victory lap. Many who watched that win with unadulterated joy on NBC that Sunday suddenly felt like they may be getting used during the network broadcast of the SOTU on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Now the same thing is happening again. Some liberal fans who don\u2019t like the president were flooding social media saying they\u2019d root for Belgium. And even if you didn\u2019t go that far, things do feels \u2026 tainted.\u00a0Trump said the reinstatement would help because a U.S. loss would feel rigged (to him). Of course, now a U.S. win will feel rigged (to everyone else). So much for the Miracle on Nice.<\/p>\n

ESPN columnist Sam Borden\u00a0labeled the national feeling an \u201cuncomfortable paradox, a jumble of joy tinged with a heavy slice of unease.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another way of saying it: so much for those pure Knicks vibes.<\/p>\n

So while all this may have increased the USMNT\u2019s chances to win on the pitch, it reduced the team\u2019s chances to win as part of a national feelgood burst, which is what the point of all these international sports tournaments is in the first place. And all because of one call that Infantino took and appeared to have acted on. (Really, haven\u2019t these people ever heard of backchanneling?)<\/p>\n

But don\u2019t feel too bad for Belgium and their pearls. Lost in all their cries is that many soccer experts believe that Balogun\u2019s move did not merit a red card.<\/p>\n

Also lost in this is that FIFA reversed a three-game suspension for Portugal\u2019s Cristiano Ronaldo before the tournament and has created Article 27 so it can do precisely that.<\/p>\n

So you can blame Donald Trump for calling Infantino (seriously, have these people never heard of backchanneling?!)? even as you also can\u2019t blame Donald Trump for exploiting a system so many have exploited before. CNN\u00a0noted\u00a0that \u201cthe very integrity of the tournament is being questioned because of the apparent actions of one man and his too-close-for-comfort relationship with the FIFA president.\u201d To which I can only say: are you new here? If you believe that the integrity and officiating of the tournament were unassailable before Donald Trump fished his cellphone out of his pocket, you clearly haven\u2019t been watching the World Cup. For 40 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe World Cup is not supposed to be political!,\u201d as some non-U.S. fans are now yelping, is the funniest thing to be uttered this tournament. And Zlatan has been pretty hilarious.<\/p>\n

The real losers in all this? Who else \u2014 the fans. Those of us who genuinely wanted to root for this U.S. men\u2019s team Monday night as part of a national moment. At least with hockey it wasn\u2019t ruined until after.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s ironic is that Trump is doing this division thing while trying to create another unifying Miracle on Ice. He clearly loves that television event, which he watched in his early 30s having grown up in the shadow of the Cold War. He including it in his montage for \u201cAmerica\u2019s Eras Tour\u201d two different times this weekend and somewhat randomly hosted 13 of its team members at the White House in December to give them\u00a0the Congressional Gold Medal.<\/p>\n

But a Miracle on Ice was a country winning while united against a foreign enemy, not a country winning while divided against itself.<\/p>\n

Trump could complain about\u00a0that<\/em>\u00a0landscape but, well.<\/p>\n

Come to think of it, kinda like FIFA. A group that, having time and again created seat-of-their pants optics and played blatant favorites, is now complaining they\u2019re being discriminated against. UEFA doesn\u2019t exactly have a clean sheet here either. I\u2019d give anything to know what the Portugal delegate said (or didn\u2019t say) when its federation was drafting that statement.<\/p>\n

So sure, complain about FIFA and Donald Trump, you\u2019d be right to. But also see the larger picture. For instance, liberal American fans rooting for Belgium might want to be gently nudged before donning Red Devils gear: Belgium\u2019s prime minister is currently\u00a0Bart De Wever, a right-wing Flemish nationalist who styles himself after Margaret Thatcher.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are no\u00a0easy or feelgood moves here.\u00a0Just outrage and hypocrisy ones. Hey, at least people will watch.<\/p>\n
