Carter De Haven III, who as a member of a distinguished, multigenerational Hollywood family produced such notable films as Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round<\/em>, Ulzana\u2019s Raid<\/em> and Hoosiers<\/em>, has died. He was 94.<\/p>\n

De Haven died Friday at UCLA West Valley Medical Center, his son, film editor Carter De Haven IV, told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. He lived at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills for the past eight years.<\/p>\n

De Haven III also produced three (well, maybe 2 1\/2) films directed by John Huston: A Walk With Love and Death<\/em> (1969), starring Anjelica Huston; the spy thriller The Kremlin Letter<\/em> (1970), starring Bibi Andersson and Richard Boone; and the thriller The Last Run<\/em> (1971), which was completed by Richard Fleischer after De Haven had to fire Huston amid griping from star George C. Scott.<\/p>\n

He also shepherded two neo-noir crime films directed by John Flynn: The Outfit<\/em> (1974), starring Robert Duvall, and Best Seller<\/em> (1987), starring James Woods and Brian Dennehy and written by Larry Cohen.<\/p>\n

De Haven made his feature producing debut on the heist film Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round<\/em> (1966), starring James Coburn \u2014 that also marked Harrison Ford\u2019s big-screen debut \u2014 and after the three Huston movies had a critical hit with Robert Aldrich\u2019s Ulzana\u2019s Raid<\/em> (1972), an revisionist Western that starred Burt Lancaster.<\/p>\n

He found his biggest success with the David Anspaugh-directed Hoosiers<\/em> (1986), starring Gene Hackman as Hickory High School basketball coach Norman Dale, who takes his small-town, underdog team all the way to the Indiana state championship.<\/p>\n

Hoosiers<\/em> ranks among the most beloved sports film ever made, with THR<\/em> placing it No. 17 on a list it published in August.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a gloriously earnest celebration of the overlooked human spirit \u2014 and a weaponized 105-minute countdown to a final five minutes guaranteed to make you cheer and cry,\u201d THR<\/em> wrote. \u201cIt works beautifully no matter how many times you\u2019ve seen it or how many imitators you\u2019ve sat through.\u201d<\/p>\n

An only child, Carter De Haven was born in Los Angeles on Feb. 16, 1932. His grandparents, the first Carter De Haven (real name Francis O\u2019Callaghan) and Flora Parker, were vaudeville stars who received top billing as \u201cMr. and Mrs. Carter De Haven\u201d in silent film comedies including Twin Beds<\/em> (1920) and The Panic\u2019s On<\/em> (1923). Later, his granddad worked with Charlie Chaplin as assistant director on Modern Times<\/em> (1936) and as assistant producer on The Great Dictator<\/em> (1940).<\/p>\n

His father, Carter De Haven Jr., was an A.D. on Picnic<\/em> (1955), The Caine Mutiny<\/em> (1954) and Days of Wine and Roses<\/em> (1964) and an associate producer on Cool Hand Luke<\/em> (1967).<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s his dad\u2019s younger sister, Gloria DeHaven, a star of such MGM musicals as Thousands Cheer<\/em> (1943) and Step Lively<\/em> (1944). She also portrayed her mom in 1950\u2019s Three Little Words<\/em>, starring Fred Astaire and Red Skelton.<\/p>\n

Carter De Haven III graduated from Hollywood High and UCLA, then was stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army Reserve. When he told his folks he missed listening to music in the service, his father\u2019s friend Frank Sinatra sent him a box of records.<\/p>\n

De Haven was an A.D. director starting in the late 1950s on such TV programs as Schlitz Playhouse<\/em>, Mike Hammer<\/em>, Wagon Train<\/em>, Tales of Wells Fargo<\/em>, Riverboat<\/em>, Bachelor Father<\/em>, Alfred Hitchcock Presents<\/em>, Thriller<\/em>, Laramie<\/em> and The Virginian<\/em>.<\/p>\n

His first film as an A.D. was Under the Yum Yum Tree<\/em> (1963), starring Jack Lemmon and Edie Adams.<\/p>\n

He quit his day job at Universal to go into producing. When Bernard Girard, who would write and direct Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round<\/em>, showed him the script for the film, \u201cI flipped over it,\u201d he recalled in 2016. \u201cI said, \u2018Jesus, I\u2019ll make a deal with this.\u2019 He said, \u2018How do you know that?\u2019 I said, \u2018I don\u2019t know, but I will\u2019 and got lucky. The first people I sent it to said, \u2018Let\u2019s make the movie.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

According to his son, De Haven didn\u2019t think much of Ford\u2019s prospects as an actor, even though he had just one brief uncredited scene as a bellhop in Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round<\/em> \u2014 \u201cnot a chance\u201d was the exact quote. However, the two later became friends and got a kick out of that.<\/p>\n

When Scott, who was coming off his Oscar win for Patton<\/em>, complained to De Haven that Huston was messing with the script on The Last Run<\/em> and that this \u201cis not the picture I signed on to make,\u201d the producer had to pink-slip one of Hollywood\u2019s most imposing directors.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot many people can recover from firing John Huston, but my dad did,\u201d his son noted.<\/p>\n

De Haven, who read about 10 scripts a week, produced Orion Pictures\u2019 Hoosiers<\/em> with Angelo Pizzo, who wrote the screenplay and insisted that Anspaugh, his former Indiana University classmate, direct his first feature.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat attracted me most to the script was that it rang of truth about a certain time, place and event in America,\u201d De Haven says in Allan Hunter\u2019s 1987 book, Gene Hackman<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of passion, a lot of caring and a tremendous amount of hard work that\u2019s gone into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

His producing r\u00e9sum\u00e9 also included Lewis Gilbert\u2019s Operation Daybreak<\/em> (1975), Seniors<\/em> (1978), Michael Schultz\u2019s Carbon Copy<\/em> (1981), the Graham Chapman-starring parody Yellowbeard<\/em> (1983), Cohen\u2019s Perfect Strangers<\/em> (1984), Maxie<\/em> (1985) and The Exorcist III <\/em>(1990).<\/p>\n

In addition to his son, who edited films including Dumber and Dumber<\/em> and Orgazmo<\/em>, survivors include his daughter, Melinda; his grandchildren, Carlye, Chelsea, Carter V, Patricia, Tess and Davis; and his great-grandkids, Sophie, Sadie, Quinn and Beau. His daughter Brooke died in 2012.<\/p>\n
