It even had the name of the holiday in the title.<\/p>\n<p>With all that going for it, it\u2019s not surprising that <em>Independence Day<\/em> became top-grossing film of that year, earning $817.4 million at the global box office. As the enduring sci-fi classic celebrates its 30th anniversary, <em>THR<\/em> looks back at the cast and what they\u2019ve been up to in the years since Will Smith knocked out a nasty-looking alien and declared: \u201cWelcome to Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Will Smith as Capt. Steven Hiller<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As hard as it may be to believe now, director Roland Emmerich had to convince the studio to cast Will Smith in the part of the Marine captain who has first contact with the genocidal alien race and plays a key role in destroying them. Known at the time primarily as a Grammy-winning hip-hop artist and star of <em>The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air<\/em>, Smith was in <em>Bad Boys <\/em>the year before <em>Independence Day<\/em> came out, but his draw at the international box office was somehow still considered an open question.<\/p>\n<p>The July 4th favorite cemented Smith\u2019s movie-star status, and in its wake, he headlined 1997\u2019s <em>Men in Black<\/em> with Tommy Lee Jones. The same year, he released his <em>Big Willie Style<\/em> album, whose breakout singles included the <em>M.I.B.<\/em> theme song, along with \u201cGettin\u2019 Jiggy Wit It\u201d and \u201cJust the Two of Us.\u201d He went on to star opposite Gene Hackman in <em>Enemy of the State<\/em> (1998), followed by the deliciously campy <em>Wild Wild West<\/em> (1999), with that film\u2019s catchy title theme being featured on his <em>Willennium<\/em> album. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new millennium brought Smith continued success with the title roles in <em>The Legend of Bagger Vance<\/em> (2000) and <em>Ali<\/em> (2001), followed by the sequels <em>Men in Black II<\/em> (2002) and <em>Bad Boys II <\/em>(2003). His hot streak continued with the action sci-fi<em> I, Robot <\/em>(2004) and rom-com <em>Hitch<\/em> (2005), and he was ubiquitous in the zeitgeist by the time he starred in <em>The Pursuit of Happyness<\/em> (2006), <em>I Am Legend <\/em>(2007) and <em>Hancock<\/em> (2008). Smith once again donned \u201cthe last suit you\u2019ll ever wear\u201d in the time-traveling <em>Men in Black 3<\/em> (2012), with other highlights including the live-action version of <em>Aladdin<\/em> (2019) as Genie. He\u2019s also been a producer on numerous projects, including ones in which he did not star, like the 2010 <em>Karate Kid<\/em> reboot featuring his son, Jaden, and Jackie Chan.<\/p>\n<p>Smith won an Oscar for his lead performance in <em>King Richard<\/em> (2021), playing the father of Venus and Serena Williams. Famously, however, minutes before his name was announced, the A-lister slapped Chris Rock onstage after the comedian made a joke referencing Smith\u2019s wife. He apologized for his behavior and resigned from the Academy, but was banned from the Oscars for a decade, and the fallout reverberated into the reception of his follow-up project, <em>Emancipation<\/em> (2022). More recently, he executive produced <em>Bel-Air<\/em>, the dramatic reimagining of <em>Fresh Prince<\/em>, and in 2025 released his first musical album in two decades, <em>Based on a True Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Bill Pullman as President Whitmore<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Who knew that the actor who played Lone Starr in <em>Spaceballs<\/em> could produce the gravitas needed to deliver one of the most memorable presidential speeches in film history? Although, really, it should be no surprise since Bill Pullman already had a long r\u00e9sum\u00e9 that included <em>Newsies<\/em> (1992), <em>A League of Their Own<\/em> (1992) and <em>While You Were Sleeping<\/em> (1995) when he was cast as President Whitmore, the dashing but besieged U.S. president forced to reckon with an extraterrestrial invasion in <em>Independence Day<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to star in David Lynch\u2019s psychological thriller <em>Lost Highway<\/em> (1997), which also featured <em>Independence Day<\/em> co-star Robert Loggia. Pullman also played a police detective in Nora Ephron\u2019s <em>Lucky Numbers<\/em> (2000), starring John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow. Among his numerous other roles, he appeared in the horror flick <em>The Grudge<\/em> (2004), starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, and played a Napa Valley winery owner in <em>Bottle Shock<\/em> (2008), which cast Chris Pine as his son.<\/p>\n<p>Pullman has appeared on Broadway in <em>The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?<\/em>, which won the 2002 Tony for best play, as well as a production of David Mamet\u2019s <em>Oleanna<\/em>, opposite Julia Styles.<\/p>\n<p>He played a small-screen U.S. president in the short-lived series <em>1600 Penn<\/em>, and returned to the <em>Independence Day<\/em> fold for the 2016 sequel <em>Resurgence<\/em>, which included much of the original cast (except Will Smith, who opted to focus on other projects, and Mae Whitman, whose role was taken over by Maika Monroe). In <em>The Equalizer<\/em> (2014) and its 2018 sequel, Pullman played a CIA operative and confidant of Denzel Washington\u2019s Robert McCall.<\/p>\n<p>Pullman was also the only person to star in all four seasons of the anthology series <em>The Sinner<\/em>, as police Detective Harry Ambrose. More recently, he was one of the stars of the gone-too-soon Netflix series <em>The Boroughs<\/em>. Among his upcoming projects, Pullman will reprise his role as Lone Starr in <em>Spaceballs: The New One<\/em>, due out in 2027, with his son Lewis (<em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>) set to play his onscreen progeny.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Jeff Goldblum, who had already played an iconic role as Dr. Ian Malcolm in <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> (1993), played David Levinson \u2014 the brains to Will Smith\u2019s brawn \u2014 in <em>Independence Day<\/em>. A bike-riding environmental activist who was previously married to the White House communications director, David decodes the aliens\u2019 communications signal and later has the genius idea that allows humankind to fight back by giving the aliens\u2019 spaceships a computer virus.<\/p>\n<p>Goldblum would go on to star in the 1997<em> Jurassic Park <\/em>sequel, <em>The Lost World<\/em>, then took a break from the franchise before reappearing in <em>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom<\/em> (2018) and <em>Jurassic World: Dominion<\/em> (2022). He also broke into the Marvel universe as Grandmaster, the overseer of a gladiator competition on a faraway planet in <em>Thor: Ragnarok <\/em>(2017) \u2014 following a teaser appearance in the credits of <em>Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2<\/em> (2017) \u2014 as well as the series <em>What If \u2026?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The actor, known for his quirky choices, is a regular collaborator of Wes Anderson, with roles in <em>The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou<\/em> (2004), <em>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em> (2014), <em>Isle of Dogs<\/em> (2018) and<em> Asteroid City <\/em>(2023). The busy Goldblum made time to return to the <em>Independence Day<\/em> franchise for the 2016 sequel and has guested on TV shows from <em>Friends<\/em> to <em>Will &amp; Grace<\/em>, <em>Glee<\/em> and <em>Portlandia<\/em>. He\u2019s also had memorable turns in commercials, including for Apple in the \u201890s and lately as the spokesman for Apartments.com.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, he played the Wizard in the acclaimed movie adaptation of <em>Wicked<\/em> (2024) and <em>Wicked: For Good<\/em> (2025). This year, he voiced Henry David Thoreau in Ken Burns\u2019 miniseries on the writer-philosopher. When he\u2019s not acting, Goldblum has become well known as a jazz musician, releasing his first album, <em>The Capitol Studios Sessions<\/em>, in 2018. He\u2019s released several other albums since, including <em>Night Blooms<\/em>, a collaboration with The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, and regularly performs both in Los Angeles and worldwide. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Judd Hirsch as Julius Levinson<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Judd Hirsch, a two-time Tony winner best known for playing Alex on the classic sitcom <em>Taxi<\/em>, played the overprotective father of Goldblum\u2019s character in <em>Independence Day<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to <em>Taxi<\/em>, Hirsch has starred in several other TV series. Among them, he starred in <em>Dear John <\/em>(1988-92) as a man who joins a support group after his wife suddenly leaves him; was a regular on <em>Numb3rs<\/em> (2005-10) as the father of the two main characters, Charlie and Don; played an antiques specialist on ABC\u2019s <em>Forever<\/em> (2014-15), about an immortal medical examiner; starred as an old-school donut shop proprietor in CBS\u2019 <em>Superior Donuts<\/em> (2017-18); and had a recurring role as Pop-Pop in <em>The Goldbergs<\/em> (2015-23).<\/p>\n<p>On the big screen, Hirsch appeared in 2001\u2019s Oscar-winning <em>A Beautiful Mind<\/em> as Professor Helinger. Other notable film roles include <em>Tower Heist<\/em> (2011), in which he played the tower\u2019s general manager; <em>The Meyerowitz Stories<\/em> (2017), as Harold Meyerowitz\u2019s old friend L.J. Shapiro; <em>Uncut Gems<\/em> (2019), as Adam Sandler\u2019s father-in-law, Gooey; and <em>The Fabelmans<\/em> (2022), as Uncle Boris.<\/p>\n<p>Now over 90 years old (he was born in 1935), Hirsch is still going strong: He appeared in four separate film projects in 2025. In the past few years, he\u2019s also popped up in guest starring roles on shows like Hulu\u2019s <em>Mid-Century Modern<\/em>, Fox\u2019s <em>Doc<\/em> and Adult Swim\u2019s <em>Bob\u2019s Burgers<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Vivica A. Fox as Jasmine<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Vivica A. Fox\u2019s early credits included a four-episode run on <em>Days of our Lives<\/em> and a small part in <em>Born on the Fourth of July<\/em>. For <em>Independence Day<\/em>, she played Will Smith\u2019s girlfriend (and eventual wife), who works as an exotic dancer to provide for her son.<\/p>\n<p>Later in 1996, Fox starred alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Kimberly Elise in <em>Set It Off<\/em>, about four women whose circumstances lead them to attempt a bank robbery. It grossed $41.6 million worldwide, with its soundtrack hitting No. 4 on the Billboard 200.<\/p>\n<p>The next year, she starred in <em>Soul Food<\/em>, a family drama that also featured Vanessa Williams and Nia Long. She later appeared alongside Halle Berry and Lela Rochon in <em>Why Do Fools Fall in Love<\/em> (1998) and starred in the sitcom <em>Getting Personal<\/em>, which lasted two seasons on Fox. That was followed by a stint on <em>City of Angels<\/em>, a medical drama that featured Blair Underwood and Viola Davis among its cast.<\/p>\n<p>Another career highlight was <em>Kill Bill: Vol. 1<\/em> (2003) and <em>Vol. 2<\/em> (2004), in which Fox played Vernita Green, one of the Deadly Vipers the Bride has sworn to kill. Since then, she\u2019s built a niche for herself in TV movies and holiday fare, becoming known as the queen of Lifetime movies. She also returned as Jasmine in the <em>Independence Day<\/em> sequel, played Candace on <em>Empire<\/em> and starred in the 2021 miniseries <em>Keeping Up With the Jonses<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This year, she was one of the stars of <em>Is God Is<\/em>, which earned a 97 percent fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes despite a tepid box office performance. She is cared for by Vivica A. Fox\u2019s Jasmine but dies of her wounds after being reunited with her family.<\/p>\n<p>The year after the blockbuster film\u2019s release, McDonnell played the judge in a made-for-TV remake of courtroom drama <em>12 Angry Men<\/em> directed by William Friedkin, whose star-studded cast also included Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Courtney B. Vance, James Gandolfini and Tony Danza. Then in 2001, she played Rose, the mother of the titular character in the cult sci-fi movie <em>Donnie Darko<\/em>, reuniting with fellow <em>Independence Day<\/em> castmember James Duval. Later film roles include <em>Scream 4<\/em> (2011) and <em>Margin Call<\/em> (2011), about the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>She was Emmy-nominated after a multi-episode arc on <em>ER<\/em> and received another guest acting nom in 2011 for playing Capt. Sharon Raydor on <em>The Closer.<\/em> She reprised that part on the show\u2019s spinoff <em>Major Crimes<\/em>, then went on to play President Laura Roslin on <em>Battlestar Galactica <\/em>(2004-09).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More recently, McDonnell played Madeline Usher in Netflix\u2019s 2023 miniseries <em>The Fall of the House of Usher<\/em> and had a guest role on Netflix\u2019s <em>The Boroughs<\/em>. Upcoming projects in which she is expected to appear include Marvel TV\u2019s <em>VisionQuest<\/em> and the <em>Baywatch<\/em> reboot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Margaret Colin as Communications Director Constance Spano<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Margaret Colin, who got her start on the soap <em>The Edge of Night<\/em>, had a memorable role in <em>Independence Day<\/em> as the White House communications director, who\u2019s also the ex-wife of Jeff Goldblum\u2019s David.<\/p>\n<p>After the patriotic blockbuster, the actress starred opposite Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt in <em>The Devil\u2019s Own<\/em> (1997). Later, in the short-lived CBS sci-fi series <em>Now and Again<\/em>, she played the wife of a man whose brain is implanted into a new body after a train accident, as part of a government experiment. She went on to appear in movies like <em>Unfaithful<\/em> (2002), with Richard Gere and Diane Lane; <em>First Daughter<\/em> (2004), with Katie Holmes; and <em>Deception<\/em> (2008), with Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams.<\/p>\n<p>On <em>Gossip Girl<\/em>, on the wildly popular CW teen drama that ran from 2007-12, Colin played Blair Waldorf\u2019s (Leighton Meester) mother, a successful fashion designer. She also appeared in the show\u2019s HBO Max revival. Her most recent film credit is <em>Tox<\/em>, a psychological drama about cosmetic surgery that has yet to have a wide release. She appeared on Broadway earlier this year in the one-act original comedy <em>The Balusters<\/em>, which was nominated for the Tony for best play<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Randy Quaid as Pilot Russell Casse<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Randy Quaid, known by many as Cousin Eddie from the <em>National Lampoon\u2019s Vacation<\/em> movies, provided some comic relief in <em>Independence Day<\/em> as a Vietnam veteran who was kidnapped by aliens \u2014 though no one believes him, even after spaceships assemble over the planet\u2019s major cities \u2014 and is out for revenge.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of \u201896, Quaid also co-starred with Woody Harrelson in <em>Kingpin<\/em>, a Farrelly brothers comedy about competitive bowling. He went on to appear in a range of movies including <em>Vegas Vacation<\/em> (1997); <em>Hard Rain<\/em> (1998), a disaster-crime film starring Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater; and the parody <em>Not Another Teen Movie<\/em> (2001). He also played Elvis\u2019 manager \u201cColonel\u201d Tom Parker in a CBS miniseries about the King in 2005, earning an Emmy nomination, and that same year was in the Oscar-winning <em>Brokeback Mountain<\/em> as Joe Aguirre, the rancher who hires Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall\u2019s characters, leading to their romantic liaison.<\/p>\n<p>In the subsequent decade, Randy and his wife, Evi Quaid, became involved in several legal issues, including a burglary charge after allegedly breaking into the guest house of a property they once owned, which they claimed had been fraudulently transferred to another person. The couple sought asylum in Canada in 2010, but returned in 2015 and relocated to Vermont, where a judge dismissed the charges that they were fugitives from justice. Randy has since become a vocal supporter of President Trump, and he\u2019s reportedly a castmember in <em>Meemaw<\/em>, a TV series starring Roseanne Barr that has yet to find a home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Brent Spiner as Dr. Brakish Okun<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Brent Spiner is synonymous with <em>Star Trek<\/em>\u2019s Data to this day, but only two years after<em> The Next Generation<\/em> wrapped back in 1994, he portrayed a wild-haired Area 51 scientist who meets an unfortunate mishap while trying to dissect an alien in <em>Independence Day<\/em>. (It is revealed in <em>Independence Day: Resurgence<\/em> that he was not killed in the attack, but instead spent 20 years in a coma.)<\/p>\n<p>In 1997, Spiner appeared on Broadway in <em>1776<\/em>, which was nominated for the best revival of a musical Tony. The actor also would go on to reprise the part of Data in <em>Star Trek<\/em> films including<em> First Contact<\/em> (1996), <em>Insurrection<\/em> (1998) and <em>Nemesis<\/em> (2002). He also recently returned to the role in the well-received Paramount+ series <em>Star Trek: Picard<\/em> (in which he also played the android\u2019s creator).<\/p>\n<p>Spiner has appeared in films like <em>Dude, Where\u2019s My Car?<\/em> (2000), <em>I Am Sam <\/em>(2001) and<em> The Aviator<\/em> (2004) and played LAPD captain Ned Vanderhoff in the 2020 Showtime miniseries <em>Penny<\/em> <em>Dreadful: City of Angels<\/em>. His most recent credit was on the reboot of <em>Night Court<\/em>, where he played Bob Wheeler, a recurring character he portrayed on the original show in the 1980s. In 2021, he released a novel, <em>Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Robert Loggia as General Grey<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An acting legend who appeared in films like <em>An Officer and a Gentleman<\/em> (1982), <em>Scarface<\/em> (1983), <em>Jagged Edge<\/em> (1985) and <em>Big<\/em> (1988), along with the <em>Pink Panther<\/em> franchise, Robert Loggia brought authority to his role as General William Grey in <em>Independence Day<\/em>. Even Bill Pullman admitted to being starstruck on set, going so far as to ask the veteran actor to call his brother on the phone. Pullman had another chance to act opposite Loggia in 1997\u2019s <em>Lost Highway<\/em>, a surrealist horror film directed by David Lynch.<\/p>\n<p>In later years, Loggia went on to appear in <em>The Proposition<\/em> (1998), <em>Holy Man<\/em> (1998), <em>Funny Money <\/em>(2006), <em>Shrink<\/em> (2009) and other lesser-known movies, and made guest appearances on numerous popular TV shows like <em>Fraiser<\/em>, <em>Dharma &amp; Greg<\/em>, <em>The Sopranos<\/em>, <em>Monk<\/em> and <em>Hawaii Five-0<\/em>. He continued to work until his death in 2015, including a cameo in <em>Independence Day: Resurgence<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>James Duval as Miguel<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>James Duval, who played fighter pilot Russell\u2019s (Randy Quaid) oldest son in <em>Independence Day<\/em>, has a whopping 200 acting credits on his IMDb page, so it\u2019s hard to pick just a few to highlight. The actor is a frequent collaborator with Gregg Araki, including the director\u2019s Teen Apocalypse trilogy (<em>Totally Fucked Up<\/em>, <em>Doom Generation<\/em> and <em>Nowhere<\/em>), a working relationship that has continued to the present day with an appearance in the upcoming Olivia Wilde starrer <em>I Want Your Sex<\/em> (due out July 31).<\/p>\n<p>He had a memorable turn in the cult favorite <em>Donnie Darko<\/em> (2001) as Frank, the man in a rabbit costume around whom the twisted plot revolves. Other notable credits include <em>Gone in 60 Seconds<\/em> (2000), as a member of the car-theft ring; <em>Wild Horses<\/em> (1998), starring Angelyne; <em>May<\/em> (2002), a horror film that also featured Angela Bettis and Anna Faris; and the horror-comedy <em>Beast Mode<\/em> (2020). When he\u2019s not acting, Duval is a musician and trained yoga instructor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<article>\n<h2>Mae Whitman as Patricia Whitmore<\/h2>\n<p><!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Whitman, who played the president\u2019s daughter, made her big-screen debut in <em>When a Man Loves a Woman<\/em> (1994), as Meg Ryan\u2019s daughter.
