A (very) short list: Netflix\u2019s The American Experiment<\/em> is topically worth a binge, and History is debuting a new special Ralph Lauren\u2019s American Icons<\/em>. PBS, naturally, is going all in \u2014 as are news stations. Pluto compiled 250 \u201chand-selected films\u00a0celebrating the people, places and stories that have shaped America\u201d \u2014 all free, of course. ABC and ESPN2 will share the men\u2019s Nathan\u2019s hot dog-eating contest at 12:30 p.m. ET; ESPN\u2019s apps will live-stream the women\u2019s event at 10:45 a.m.<\/p>\n

Macy\u2019s fireworks (live on NBC, Peacock and Telemundo, 8 p.m. ET to 10 p.m.) are always a crowdpleaser and the most-watched TV event of the day. But the coolest piece of content may be something else<\/em> live on NBC (and Telemundo) on the Fourth.<\/p>\n

America\u2019s 250<\/em> (7 a.m. ET to 1 p.m. ET), which is NBC\u2019s coverage of Sail 4th 250, will be covered by 23 of the network\u2019s anchors, reporters and correspondents positioned all over New York and New Jersey. Today<\/em> anchors Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin will host the coverage from Governors Island; they\u2019ll be joined by colleagues Al Roker, Carson Daly, Willie Geist and Jenna Bush Hager. (Roker actually covered the last big Fourth of July tall-ship parade \u2014 the bicentennial sail \u2014 as a cub reporter out of Syracuse.)<\/p>\n

If you think that\u2019s a lot of talent, it is, but there will be twice as many cameras \u2014 by air, by land and by sea \u2014 capturing this thing, with nine hard cameras, 15 handheld cameras, six drones, a helicopter, a blimp, and additional cameras aboard several vessels.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Sail 4th (get it? \u201cSail forth,\u201d but for our nation\u2019s birthday) event is \u201cexpected to be the largest maritime and aerial gathering in U.S. history with (48) tall ships, naval vessels and aircraft from 46 nations,\u201d per NBC.<\/p>\n

Sail4th 250 is the successor to Operation Sail, Inc. \u2014 the organization President John F. Kennedy endorsed in 1961 to use tall ship gatherings to \u201cpromote international friendship, maritime heritage, and support for sail training.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, \u201ctall ship\u201d is the class of vessels\u2019 official name. Kind of dumb, yes, but perfectly descriptive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe name is so simple, and the ships are so intricate \u2014 it\u2019s an oxymoron,\u201d Jon Slobotkin, senior vice president of live events at NBC Sports Regional Networks, acknowledged.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really can\u2019t find the words until you stand in front of one,\u201d Maggie McCarthy Baxter, vice president of programming and community, told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. \u201cYou just see the grandeur and the awe \u2014 it is really remarkable. So, I don\u2019t know if there is the right word for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sail 4th boats will duck under the Verrazzano Bridge, past the Statue of Liberty, and up the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge. The tall ships will leave from Sandy Hook, New Jersey at 7 a.m. and enter the New York Harbor at 9:30 a.m. The Queen Mary 2 will be there, as will the U.S. Coast Guard\u2019s Eagle, known as \u201cAmerica\u2019s Tall Ship.\u201d<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t forget to look up \u2014 like, even higher than the masts \u2014 the parade will include 200 airplanes and helicopters, including the U.S. Navy\u2019s Blue Angels. Together, it will be quite the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to the moment that the lead boats come past Governors Island as the aerial review begins, the simultaneous moment [with] screaming jets above,\u201d Slobotkin said.<\/p>\n

Baxter, Slobotkin, and Matt Carluccio, executive producer of Today<\/em> weekends and special events, will be among the NBC executives braving the heat and potential thunderstorms for that first ship to the final one. Fingers will be crossed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have an inclement weather plan here,\u201d Carluccio said. \u201cWe never did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, he\u2019s got one idea for the NBC\/Telemundo teams \u2014 and for spectators \u2014 to beat the heat.<\/p>\n
