Tom Hanks\u2018 forthcoming baseball film is ready to hit the ground running. <\/p>\n

Sony Pictures announced Wednesday that it is set to release The Comebacker <\/em>theatrically on July 30, 2027. Hanks stars in the movie that Marielle Heller helms from her own script, which adapts Dave Eggers\u2019 2024 short story of the same name.<\/p>\n

The Comebacker<\/em> stars Hanks as a pitching coach whose life is changed dramatically after he gets beaned in the head with a hit ball while standing at the mound. <\/p>\n

Playtone and Leah Holzer produce the project in cooperation with Major League Baseball.<\/p>\n

The Comebacker<\/em> is set to hit theaters in late July, which falls just past the typical midway point of the MLB season as the pennant races continue heating up. <\/p>\n

Hanks already has one classic baseball movie under his belt, as he starred alongside Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O\u2019Donnell in the beloved 1992 film A League of Their Own<\/em>. Hanks portrayed manager Jimmy Dugan in director Penny Marshall\u2019s 1940s-set ode to the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. <\/p>\n

That film, which similarly hit theaters in July, features Hanks delivering the line, \u201cThere\u2019s no crying in baseball.\u201d It ranked No. 54 on AFI\u2019s list of the best movie quotes.<\/p>\n

Heller most recently directed Amy Adams in 2024\u2019s Nightbitch<\/em>. Her other directorial credits include The Diary of a Teenage Girl<\/em>, Can You Ever Forgive Me?<\/em> and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood<\/em>, with the latter starring Hanks as the late Fred Rogers.<\/p>\n

A two-time Oscar-winning performer, Hanks returned to voice Woody in the animated hit Toy Story 5<\/em> that is now in theaters. His recent features include The Phoenician Scheme<\/em> and Here<\/em>.<\/p>\n
