\n\tThe autodidact Ramadan has made a name for himself as an actor, director and screenwriter, winning several awards for his portrayal of Ali \u201cToni\u201d Hamady, the head of a Berlin drug cartel, in the German drama series 4 Blocks<\/em>, which has also been discovered by an ever-increasing international audience in the streaming age. He has further made a splash with the likes of\u00a0Asbestos<\/em>, a drama series about a soccer player whose dreams of going professional are shattered when he is framed by his uncle for a crime. Speaking of shattered: The series did just that to the record for the best start ever of a series on public broadcaster ARD\u2019s ARD Mediathek streaming service.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe followed up that success with another ARD hit, namely two seasons of Testo<\/em>, in which he starred while also co-writing and co-directing. The show follows five prisoners who rob a bank while on free access. When a security guard is accidentally killed, they are forced to take hostages, and the situation quickly escalates.<\/p>\n

\n\tRamadan also directed the movie Haltlos<\/em>, starring Lilith Stangenberg as a woman experiencing a crisis and deciding to give up her newborn baby for adoption. The film earned rave reviews for its intensity. The creative further wrote, directed and starred in \u00c9galit\u00e9<\/em>, the psychogram of a family father.\u00a0He also handled all those jobs on the TV movie In Berlin W\u00e4chst Kein Orangenbaum<\/em>, which can be translated as No Orange Trees Grow in Berlin<\/em>. In it, he plays Nabil, who is released from prison after 15 years due to terminal cancer and finds out that he has a daughter, to whom he wants to leave his share of the loot from the robbery that put him behind bars.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn short, Ramadan has accomplished and won pretty much everything there is to accomplish and win in Germany.<\/p>\n

\n\tNow, he is bringing his ability to slip into complex characters to the family drama Hijamat<\/em>, written and directed by none other than\u00a0Nader Saeivar\u00a0(The Witness<\/em>) and produced and edited by\u00a0none other than Jafar Panahi. Yes, that is the creative duo that co-wrote\u00a0Cannes 2025 Palme d\u2019Or winner\u00a0It Was Just An Accident<\/em>, which was nominated for two Oscars. The film will be taking the spotlight with its world premiere at one of the oldest film festivals in the world when it debuts at the\u00a060th edition\u00a0of the\u00a0Karlovy Vary\u00a0International\u00a0Film Festival\u00a0(KVIFF) on Wednesday, July 8, in\u00a0the Czech festival\u2018s Crystal Globe main competition. <\/p>\n

In Hijamat<\/em>, Ramadan portrays Murad, who is shaken to the core and struggles to protect his younger brother Kerem, played by Jael Cem Ilhan, when he learns that Kerem is gay. Long-buried secrets threaten to tear his deeply religious Muslim family and their life in Berlin apart as he finds himself subjected to pressures from all sides, including from his father, who has close ties to the local imam. Nicolette Krebitz, Aziz Capkurt,\u00a0Moritz Bleibtreu\u00a0and Nastassja Kinski also star in the ensemble cast.<\/p>\n

\n\tRamadan, born in Lebanon before his family moved to Germany when he was a young kid, took time out of his busy schedule to share with THR<\/em> how he approached his lead role in Hijamat<\/em>, working with the celebrated film auteurs behind it, the challenge of preparing for the film while serving a prison sentence, why acting is all about honesty, and why Hijamat<\/em> is a story about freedom.<\/p>\n

\nHow did you approach and \u201cbecome\u201d Murad in Hijamat<\/em>?
<\/strong>
Do you know the Austrian director Marvin Kren? In 4 Blocks<\/em>, he at some point made a robot out of my character,\u00a0Toni Hamady.\u00a0And I remembered that and felt that this was a very similar role.<\/p>\n

Murad fights a lot for the family and takes on so much just so that everything fits. But he never even thinks about himself. And he doesn\u2019t see that he has a disease. Actually, it\u2019s not a disease; it\u2019s a co-dependency. And he has ADHD.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Could you tap into your personal experience as a loving family man to slip into the character Murad?
<\/strong>
The motto for me in this role was honesty and authenticity. I have family and children myself. And I have siblings. And film is about honesty and authenticity. If you\u2019re not honest in a\u00a0film, then it doesn\u2019t work \u2013 at least for me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nI don\u2019t know why, but watching you, this felt like a very physical role, even though Murad doesn\u2019t run marathons or have big fights. What do you think?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI wanted to get into this role and not have a lot of dialogue. I focused on expressing a lot through the eyes, body and this honesty.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nWell, you managed to touch me<\/strong>. I\u00a0thought to myself repeatedly, while watching Hijamat<\/em>: Please, somebody give Murad a hug or something!
<\/strong>
You know, I\u2019ve been waiting for a hug since I was a kid. But the hug is there for me when I have a good screenplay and a great director.\u00a0And that was the case here. I had a great director and a great screenplay.\u00a0I\u2019m an actor, I\u2019m a juggler, and we go into different roles.\u00a0Here, we had a director who really brought great emotion to the set.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen you have a director who honestly thanks you after every take, and you say thank you back, that is not common.\u00a0I\u2019ve rarely had that in Germany, where things are more technical. There was love and that human element in the communication,\u00a0and that\u2019s art for me.<\/p>\n

\nDid you know Nader Saeivar<\/strong> before Hijamat<\/em>, and how did you get cast for the role?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tNo, I was asked to do the role and waited two years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut in those two years, I was in prison for a year. I thought a lot about it in prison and if I could shoot this movie at all. I get a lot of requests, but I really wanted to play this role because it totally grabbed me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tI really want to thank producer Said Nur Akku\u015f for all his trust and for bringing me to this wonderful project and giving me the chance to work with the amazing Nader Saeivar.<\/p>\n

\nYou served an open prison sentence in Germany for repeatedly driving without a license. Under this set-up, you could serve time in a low-security facility and can get permission to work during the day and return at night. Can you share a bit about how this affected the communication with the Hijamat<\/em> team and your preparation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tIn my one year in prison, I had direct contact\u00a0with the director and everyone. I\u2019m very grateful for that. That was a matter of trust for me. I had to prepare in prison\u00a0and then get into the role.\u00a0Actually, the first days of shooting took place\u00a0when I was still in prison.<\/p>\n

\n\tI also quickly got my driver\u2019s license\u00a0while I was in prison,\u00a0because I have a lot of car ride scenes in the film, and I didn\u2019t want to be doubled. I hate doubles.\u00a0If someone can be my double, it\u2019s another Kida Khodr Ramadan.<\/p>\n

\nSince we discussed prison, I want to ask you about someone who is supposed to go to prison, again, in Iran.<\/strong> Did you know Jafar Panahi\u2018s films well before agreeing to do Hijamat<\/em>? <\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tYes, I\u2019ve seen them. He always does great stuff. They told me that Panahi is a producer\u00a0on this\u00a0and will cut the film.<\/p>\n

Everyone asked me if I wasn\u2019t afraid to be edited by Panahi.\u00a0But why should I be afraid?\u00a0I\u2019m ready.\u00a0When I\u2019m in costume and mask,\u00a0I\u2019m prepared for the project.\u00a0Filmmaking is sometimes\u00a0like\u00a0love and war.\u00a0You have to get through it. You have to trust your body,\u00a0and you have to trust your soul.\u00a0You have to be present and in the moment \u2013 whether the editor is Hans-Peter\u00a0or Panahi.\u00a0I\u2019m happy to be a participant\u00a0in a great movie\u00a0written by Nader, who trusted me, and edited by Panahi. <\/p>\n

\n\tNader was my captain,\u00a0and we focused on\u00a0bringing this ship home.\u00a0It\u2019s nice when you can just\u00a0focus on that and dive into the role.<\/p>\n

\n\tMy director\u00a0fled from his country\u00a0because he wasn\u2019t allowed to live there\u00a0without being afraid for his family. It\u2019s all so paradoxical.<\/p>\n

\nWas being directed by Nader different from your past experiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tThe most important thing\u00a0was to understand\u00a0the system of an Iranian director and\u00a0how he works.\u00a0In the German system,\u00a0it is very different,\u00a0and you play differently. I noticed that timing was\u00a0very important for the film.\u00a0Timing was extremely important.\u00a0We had a lot of one-takes, so you just have to be there and be ready.<\/p>\n

\n\tI actually ate better and slept better during the production.\u00a0It is very important\u00a0with such a film that you\u00a0are\u00a0in good shape mentally. You need this energy.\u00a0Otherwise, it\u2019s disrespectful\u00a0to the audience\u00a0if you don\u2019t show\u00a0what you can do.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nTell me bit about the great cast you have around you in Hijamat<\/em>.<\/strong> Were you familiar with Jael before, for example? I had never seen him before.<\/strong> And then you have such stars as Moritz Bleibtreu and Nastassja Kinski<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

\n\tNo, I didn\u2019t know Jael, but he did his job\u00a0so well. For me, it was really important\u00a0that we all pull together,\u00a0and I think that\u2019s why it worked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tNastassja Kinski is a friend of mine.\u00a0I asked Nader about her, and he said I should\u00a0bring her in, and I did right away. She\u2019s a legend.\u00a0We all look up\u00a0to Nastassja.\u00a0And then I brought in\u00a0Moritz.<\/p>\n

And I was so very grateful,\u00a0very grateful\u00a0indeed,\u00a0that I had such a great partner\u00a0in the film in Nicolette Krebitz.\u00a0She gave me the security in my role.\u00a0She was a very important point for me.<\/p>\n

\nReligion plays a key but different role for the various characters in Hijamat<\/em>, but it doesn\u2019t feel like a film about religion. What role do you see religion playing in the film?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tSome people will likely confuse it for a religious film. For me, it\u2019s a film about freedom.\u00a0It has nothing to do with nationality\u00a0or religion,\u00a0but with people wanting to be free.\u00a0And that was the theme for me.\u00a0Freedom. A person wants to be free,\u00a0but he has his limits. And sometimes you have to\u00a0cross those limits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nI don\u2019t want to keep you any longer, given all your work and other commitments. What can you share with me about projects that you are currently working on or preparing for?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI have been doing a lot of directing,\u00a0but now I want to work\u00a0more as an actor again.\u00a0I am preparing for the lead role of G\u00f6z<\/em>\u00a0by Nuran David Calis, [a contemporary reimagining of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\u2019s G\u00f6tz von Berlichingen<\/em>].<\/p>\n

And then I will shoot\u00a0[a satire about a village thrown into disarray by the arrival of extraterrestrials] with the twins\u00a0who did the series Die<\/em>\u00a0Discounter<\/em>. I will play the main character in this film from\u00a0Bruno Alexander\u00a0and Emil and Oskar Belton.\u00a0The film is called Aliens Over Meck-Pomm<\/em>.<\/p>\n
