This is particularly gratifying given the absurd and cruel trolling the young actress received from the toxic corners of internet fandom leading up to the film\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=2592\">Jayda Cheaves Signs With WME After Leaving The Team (Exclusive)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tYet the praise for Alcock feels like watching a plane crash and seeing just one person get miraculously thrown clear of the wreckage without a scratch. The film\u2019s reviews range from negative to tepid praise (averaging a 58 percent Rotten Tomatoes score). Many point fingers at the film\u2019s script, with <em>Variety<\/em>\u2018s line \u2014 \u201ca comic-book movie with the worst script I can remember\u201d \u2014 going viral. That\u2019s surely hyperbolic (<em>Madame Web<\/em>, for starters, was <em>Showgirls<\/em>-level mockable). But the criticism is ironic given DC Studios\u2019 co-chief <strong>James Gunn<\/strong>\u2018s famous pledge of taking a script-first approach to franchise management. Gunn knows precisely what strong writing looks like, so one wonders if his company\u2019s eagerness to get <em>Supergirl<\/em> out one year after <em>Superman<\/em> resulted in some \u201cwe\u2019ll fix it as we go\u201d thinking without <strong>Kevin Feige<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cwe\u2019ll fix it as we go\u201d results. Box office tracking puts <em>Supergirl<\/em> at a $50 million opening weekend, and that\u2019s the most optimistic projection.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNot to pile on, but there\u2019s another recurring gripe from the reviews which stood out: Critics bashed the film as being murky, dark and gray, with poor VFX: \u201cMuddy CG sludge\u201d wrote one. Another said the film was full of \u201csludgy browns and grays\u201d and \u201cthe visual murkiness of the settings makes it hard to follow the already unintelligible action sequences.\u201d A third wrote the \u201cVFX is so rough it makes <em><strong>The Flash<\/strong><\/em> look like <em><strong>Avatar<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMoviegoers increasingly <em>despise<\/em> murky, dark visuals (often used to hide weak effects), along with obvious CGI, and incoherent action. They\u2019ve seen it so many times they\u2019ve become allergic. If there\u2019s one piece of unsolicited advice I could give studio executives green-lighting action films, it\u2019s this: <em>If you cannot afford \u2014 or don\u2019t have the time or talent available \u2014 to make your film\u2019s sets and action look as realistic and amazing as possible, then rewrite your script<\/em>. If Kara having wild space adventures with a bunch of aliens is going to look like slop, then ground her in Michigan with real sets and as many practical effects as possible. Remember how the first <em><strong>Thor<\/strong><\/em> movie was set in, like, a random town? Or how <em><strong>A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/strong><\/em> won over <em><strong>Game of Thrones<\/strong><\/em> fans by going smaller and doing less? <\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong><span>LOSER<\/span><\/strong>: Movie Influencers\t<\/h2>\n<p>\n\tOkay so this is <em>still<\/em> going on about <em>Supergirl<\/em>. You know those \u201cfirst look\u201d social media influencers that get early access to films and tend to skew extremely positive? The critic reviews of <em>Supergirl<\/em> didn\u2019t wind up in the same galaxy as the overwhelming majority of the gushing first reaction crowd. That\u2019s not unusual. But combined with <strong>Disney<\/strong>\u2018s embarrassing <em><strong>The Mandalorian and Grogu<\/strong><\/em> influencer stunt that backfired, a movie\u2019s first reactions on social media are increasingly being met with equal amounts of fan skepticism. As I broke yesterday, Universal has decided to skip \u201cword-of-mouth screenings\u201d entirely for <em><strong>The Odyssey<\/strong><\/em> and go straight to critic screening, which is an interesting move. This could become a new show-of-strength standard for marketing films, while catering to influencers could increasingly look a bit desperate. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=2590\">At Just 11 Years Old, Dexter Sol Ansell Is Already a Pro<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong><strong><span>WINNER<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>: <em>House of the Dragon<\/em> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\tThe season three return of the HBO fantasy drama was an improvement compared to season two on every level. The episode was more tightly written, had flashes of actual humor, and gave die-hard fans what they crave \u2014 some spectacular action with lots of dragon-on-dragon fighting. The result was the show\u2019s second-best IMDb score of any episode. Premiere ratings were strong \u2014 22 million viewers across three days, though that\u2019s down eight percent from the season two opener. Critics who watched the first several episodes grade the season as the best one yet, and say the upcoming third and fourth episodes are standouts.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHowever \u2026 let\u2019s be honest with each other: Did you actually care about the characters involved in the Battle of the Gullet? (Including a shouty antagonist, the axe-wielding Sharako Lohar, who was only introduced in the season two finale?) Were any of those characters as charismatic or interesting as minor figures from <em><strong>Game of Thrones<\/strong><\/em>, such as Gendry, Tormund or Olenna? Are the characters still having to remind you who they are three seasons into the show (\u201cThat\u2019s my sister!\u201d cries Rhaena)? Are Rhaenyra and Alicent still portrayed as sad victims of scheming men and misunderstandings rather than ruthless, flawed protagonists who help drive the story (like in <strong>George R.R. Martin\u2019<\/strong>s book)? Can you imagine Cersei or Daenerys getting haplessly locked in their bedroom during a war by their own guard? <em>House of the Dragon<\/em> keeps feeling like \u201cOops all Sansas,\u201d only without the empathy <strong>Sophie Turner<\/strong> generated for that character. But, you know, dragons burned a lot of boats.<\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong><strong><span>WINNER<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>: Apple\t<\/h2>\n<p>\n\tThe trend lately has been for streamers to focus on quality over quantity \u2014 or, at least, claiming to do so. \u201cNo consumer is asking for more content, but for better content\u201d as Warner Bros. Discovery boss <strong>David Zaslav<\/strong> put it (which doesn\u2019t explain <em><strong>The Franchise<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Duster<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Euphoria<\/strong><\/em> season three). This week, Apple senior executive <strong>Eddy Cue<\/strong> was all: <em>To hell with that<\/em>. \u201cWe want \u200bto keep getting better and more,\u201d Cue told Reuters. Apple\u2019s had serious success lately with <em><strong>F1<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Silo<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Pluribus<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>The Studio<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Widow\u2019s Bay<\/strong><\/em> (which was just renewed for season two), so it\u2019s no surprise they\u2019re feeling emboldened to ramp up while others tap the brakes.
