\n\tThe young British star is, for The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2018s benefit, re-enacting his run-in with comedy legend Steve Carell at HBO Max\u2019s U.K. launch party a couple of months ago. \u201cI go around, I\u2019m just saying hi to people, and people are saying hi. And then I walk around this corner, and there\u2019s just Steve Carell on a chair.\u201d (Cue aforementioned recreation of starstruck-ness.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was like, \u2018Should I say hi or should I not? I don\u2019t know what to do!\u2019 and Mummy went, \u2018Oh, go on, just say hi,’\u201d he explains. \u201cSo I creeped over, and then I went, \u2018Hi,\u2019 and he went, \u2018Omg! I love you! You\u2019re amazing!\u2019 Steve Carell knows who I am? That was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCrazy is an apt descriptor for what this kid\u2019s life has looked like since his first audition (for U.K. soap Emmerdale<\/em>, of all things) at age four. He has continued to impress in every project since, such as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes<\/em>, where he played a young Coriolanus Snow, and later, in 2024\u2019s mystery-horror The Moor<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut no one could have prepared themselves for the sheer talent \u2014\u00a0and striking maturity \u2014\u00a0with which Ansell co-led season one of Ira Parker\u2019s triumphant Game of Thrones <\/em>spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/em>. As the mischievous squire Egg (who would go on to reveal his true identity as Prince\u00a0Aegon Targaryen), a smooth-headed Ansell shot to stardom upon its January release on HBO. Rave reviews ensued for him, Peter Claffey (as Ser Duncan the Tall), and the entire show. It was pegged as a light-hearted departure from the doom and gloom of Thrones <\/em>and House of the Dragon<\/em>, and the verdict was pretty unanimous: it worked.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe season two shoot is already underway in Ireland, where Ansell is calling from. His head is freshly shaved and that same cheeky, yet surprisingly eloquent Egg-ness immediately comes through over our half-hour interview. Ansell\u2019s mother, Debbie, sits just off-camera. She\u2019s on hand for when the actor can\u2019t quite conjure up particular details from his booming career (which of course he can\u2019t help \u2014\u00a0he was four when this all began, remember?)<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the last six months are clear as day for Ansell, who has just been named IMDb\u2019s youngest-ever STARmeter Award recipient. He\u2019s still reeling from the premieres, the parties and, he tells THR, <\/em>a recently-made WhatsApp gif of his character, which his friends are \u201cspamming\u201d their group chats with.<\/p>\n

\n\tHis depiction of Dunk\u2019s tenacious sidekick received George R. R. Martin\u2019s approval early on in the process (Seven Kingdoms<\/em> is based on Martin\u2019s Tales of Dunk and Egg<\/em>\u00a0novellas). He recalls meeting the fantasy legend: \u201cHe\u2019s very happy. He didn\u2019t give me any advice. He said, \u2018You look and sound like you just jumped out of the books.\u2019 That was fun.\u201d Ansell adds about the graphic novel adaptations of Dunk and Egg<\/em>: \u201cIf you actually look at the drawings, which were drawn, like, five years before I was born \u2014\u00a0they could have made it then, but they didn\u2019t. They waited for me,\u201d he teases, putting two hands under his chin and looking up like a cherub in a Renaissance painting. \u201cBut those drawings of Egg look exactly like me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnsell finds he has a lot in common with the character personality-wise, too. \u201cHe has lots of humor, and he\u2019s very funny, like me. I can be quite funny sometimes.\u201d THR <\/em>can concur. Though playing Egg also came with some hurdles: \u201cThere were some really hard moments where I had to juggle being a Targaryen and being just a stable boy, and if you watch season one, you can see the little moments where I\u2019m juggling Targaryen-ness and squire-ness. That was a lot of hard work [I put] into that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe\u2019s truly putting his own spin on Egg, given that he can\u2019t pull much inspiration from Game of Thrones <\/em>\u2014\u00a0very much an adult watch \u2014\u00a0and has only seen clips of House of the Dragon<\/em> (mostly the ones where dragons feature, though he did catch the recent, epic Battle of the Gullet). It does help, however, that he\u2019s acquired a true friend in Claffey. In fact, this is what Ansell describes as the highlight of his Seven Kingdoms <\/em>journey so far. \u201c[The best part is] probably hanging out with Peter. A few weeks ago, he came to my house, and we had a weekend when the national horse race stuff [the U.K.\u2019s Grand National] was on\u2026 He\u2019s a really good singer,\u201d he says when we ask what audiences might be surprised to find out about Claffey, \u201cand he plays the guitar really well. We can both sing, so we should write some songs and make an album,\u201d he declares. \u201cCall it Double Trouble<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNaturally, we\u2019re keen to find out what we can about the second instalment of Seven Kingdoms<\/em>, but this young actor is already an absolute pro. \u201cI\u2019m having a lot of fun, but if you really want to know more, there is a book!\u201d is his diplomatic response. He emphasizes again: \u201cThere\u2019s a book, and if you want to know more, just read it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe purpose of our call isn\u2019t actually to discuss A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms<\/em>, though it comes up almost immediately in the context of Ansell\u2019s endlessly impressive year. Out in U.K. cinemas on Friday, June 26 is 500 Miles<\/em>, a feature film adaptation of Mark Lowery\u2019s novel Charlie and Me <\/em>by Malcolm Campbell, directed by Morgan Matthews. \u201cI really wanted to do a good feature film \u2014\u00a0a good independent film,\u201d says Ansell. \u201cSo I was like, \u2018This is great. I love the story, I loved the character I was playing, so I thought, \u2018Let\u2019s do it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn this heart-wrenching blend of British and Irish cinema, Ansell plays a young boy named Charlie. With his older brother Finn (Jojo Rabbit<\/em>\u2018s Roman Griffin Davis), the siblings embark on the 500-mile journey from Sheffield to the west coast of Ireland to visit their estranged grandfather John (Bill Nighy), in the hope he can knit their broken family back together. It must have been a no-brainer for the casting directors \u2014\u00a0and Debbie, who reads the scripts before passing them on to her son \u2014\u00a0when Ansell\u2019s audition tape came through; he and Charlie are similarly spirited, sassy, and light up a room.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was a lot of ad-libbing, actually,\u201d says Ansell. \u201cObviously, the scripts are there, but they all let us throw in some words now and then, and I like that. But Charlie is fun, he is very cheeky, he wants to get his own way, but he\u2019s also not aware of everything. I wouldn\u2019t say he\u2019s very intelligent at times.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUnsurprisingly, the ad-libbing didn\u2019t throw him at all. Ansell relished it, though at just 11, each set continues to be a real learning experience. \u201cEvery day you learn more, no matter who you are, you can always learn more, and every single day working with Peter [Claffey] and Bill Nighy and Maisie Williams and all these amazing people, it\u2019s a great experience,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople are such great actors, and they teach you stuff, and then everyone bounces off of each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe admits he didn\u2019t know much about legendary British actor Nighy before signing on, but he\u2019s firmly on that train now: \u201cI knew he was massive. I was like, \u2018Oh, he sounds great, let\u2019s see.\u2019 And then I was like, \u2018Okay, wow, he\u2019s amazing.\u2019 In the middle of [the shoot] when we\u2019re resting, he all of a sudden does a speech about life, and it\u2019s amazing.\u201d Did Nighy happen to offer the young talent any advice? \u201cHe said, \u2018Pay your taxes, don\u2019t smoke, don\u2019t do any of that bad stuff.\u2019 And obviously, I wouldn\u2019t do that anyway, but it was so nice for someone else to say that,\u201d beams Ansell.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was also something of a Thrones <\/em>universe crossover with Williams, best known as Stark sibling Arya in Game of Thrones<\/em>, who plays a young Irish busker the boys pick up on their way to their grandfather\u2019s. \u201cWe talked a bit [about the franchise],\u201d says Ansell. \u201cAnd it was very fun to say, \u2018Oh, we want a dragon.\u2019 But we didn\u2019t talk too much about that. It was mainly about 500 Miles<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBeyond 500 Miles<\/em>? Ansell is shooting for the stars. He lists Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks and \u201cthe king of comedy\u201d Jim Carrey as his top three favorite actors, and is desperate to work with Steven Spielberg one day (he\u2019s seen Disclosure Day<\/em>, and loved it). But with Carell and the cast of Ansell\u2019s favorite show, Stranger Things<\/em>, already ticked off, he\u2019s keen to keep juggling as much as he can. \u201cWhat I\u2019d love to do is five [seasons of Seven Kingdoms<\/em>], and then in between each one, do a feature film,\u201d he tells THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tWith the combination of ambition and talent that Ansell possesses, it\u2019s hard to imagine this kid is destined for anything other than greatness. Right now, the wise-beyond-his-years actor is just hoping 500 Miles <\/em>has the profound impact on its audiences that it\u2019s intending to: \u201cI hope they see [that] whatever happens in your life, your family is always there to protect you. Your family is always family, and you\u2019ve got to keep close to all of them. Be kind to them. If you\u2019re bickering with your siblings, no matter what, you\u2019ve always got to keep them close.\u201d<\/p>\n
