\n\tThe\u00a0Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) celebrates the 80th anniversary of its founding and its 60th edition this year.\u00a0In addition to Hollywood celebrities, it has long celebrated and honored big Czech stars.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This year, KVIFF will bestow its President\u2019s Award on a famous Slovak actress who became an ambassador and respected voice in political life. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBy presenting an award to\u00a0Magda V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1, the festival aims not just to express its respect for the performances of one of the greatest Slovak actresses of all time, but also to remember the unique artistic connection between the Czech and Slovak filmmakers who shaped our two countries\u2019 shared cinematic history,\u201d organizers said. Slovakia and Czechia became separate independent countries again at the start of 1993, following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia.<\/p>\n

\n\tV\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1 \u201chas always been outstanding, including in terms of her intelligence in selecting her parts and her ability to use her depth, both intellectual and emotional, in her characters,\u201d KVIFF artistic director Karel Och tells THR<\/em>. \u201cWith her, it is a bit like with Eric Cantona, who decided, when he was 30, that it was enough and so he stopped playing soccer to do other things [, including acting]. Every now and then, you have this fantastic Renaissance personality, such as Mrs. V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1, who became a very respected politician.\u201d <\/p>\n

Lauding her intelligence, ability to express complex connections, \u201cbeautiful sense of humor and the Central European sense for irony, it is a great pleasure to [honor] her,\u201d Och concludes. \u201cI can\u2019t wait for her to join the festival and accept the award. In this double anniversary year, when we look a lot into the past and at the heritage of the festival, we were striving to honor a special person, who is connecting the world of cinema with other worlds beyond culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 77-year-old\u00a0V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1 may be well known in Czechia and Slovakia, but in case you need a primer,\u00a0THR<\/em> has compiled a few things to know about\u00a0her\u00a0right here.<\/p>\n

Breakthrough Film
<\/strong>V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00a0had her breakthrough role in Franti\u0161ek Vl\u00e1\u010dil\u2019s historical drama\u00a0Marketa\u00a0Lazarov\u00e1<\/em>\u00a0in\u00a01967. \u201cIn 1998, domestic film critics and journalists voted this cinematic masterpiece as the most important work of our hundred-year cinematic history,\u201d KVIFF highlighted in unveiling its plans to honor her. \u201cThe film was digitally restored in 2011, and the restored version\u2019s world premiere was held at the 46th KVIFF.\u201d
The actress, not even 20 back then, plays the titular character in the movie.<\/p>\n

What is the\u00a0Czechoslovak New Wave\u00a0period\u00a0epic,\u00a0an adaptation of\u00a0a 1931\u00a0novel by\u00a0Vladislav Van\u010dura, about?\u00a0Set in the 13th century\u00a0amid a shift from Paganism to\u00a0Christianity in\u00a0Central Europe, the film tells the story of the virgin daughter of a feudal lord who gets kidnapped by\u00a0marauders\u00a0before she is\u00a0set to join a\u00a0convent.<\/p>\n

She Didn\u2019t Always Have Her Eye on the Arts<\/strong>
V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1 became a famous actress, but she\u00a0originally didn\u2019t focus on the arts. Instead, she attended a school with a focus on math and physics. But the international success of\u00a0Marketa Lazarov\u00e1<\/em>\u00a0brought further acting offers. As KVIFF highlighted: \u201cV\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1 has said that she had originally not dreamt of becoming an actress.\u201d <\/p>\n

Luckily for fans, things ended up playing out differently, and she acted in more films and\u00a0started\u00a0to perform at the Divadlo Na korze theater in Bratislava, which was\u00a0famous for its absurdist drama, political satire, and avant-garde productions.<\/p>\n

\nShe Has Starred in a Jules Verne Film
<\/strong>Actually, to be more precise, she portrayed the female lead in Karel Zeman\u2019s 1970 adaptation of Jules Verne\u2019s novel Off on a Comet<\/em>, entitled On the Comet<\/em>. <\/p>\n

She plays Angelika, who saves\u00a0Captain Hector Servadac, a cartographer for the French army in\u00a0a French colony in\u00a0Northern Africa, when he\u00a0falls into the sea while mapping the area. The young woman is on the run from Spanish captors.<\/p>\n

A Star-Turned-Ambassador
<\/strong>After the Velvet Revolution led to the fall of communism, V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1\u00a0accepted an offer from President V\u00e1clav Havel to be Czechoslovakia\u2019s ambassador to Austria (1990\u20131993). Later, 2000 to 2005, she served as Slovakia\u2019s ambassador to Poland. \u201cShe has since continued to be engaged in politics and public life,\u201d highlighted KVIFF.<\/p>\n

And it mentioned: \u201cIn February 2026, she earned a Ph.D. in historical sociology from Charles University\u2019s Faculty of Humanities [in Prague]. She has authored several books, including last year\u2019s collection of interviews\u00a0Ne\u017e\u00a0zmiz\u00edm<\/em>\u00a0(Before I Disappear<\/em>), in which she speaks openly about current issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Out of the Past, and Into the Future
<\/strong>During this year\u2019s 60th edition of KVIFF, audiences can watch V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1\u00a0star in a film featured in the Out of the Past classics program, namely Juraj\u00a0Jakubisko\u2019s 1969 movie Birds,\u00a0Orphans\u00a0and Fools<\/em>, \u201cwhich will be personally introduced by the legendary\u00a0actress\u00a0Magda\u00a0V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1,\u201d as the fest highlights. \u201cThis cult \u2018banned\u2019 parable only had its true premiere more than 20 years after it was filmed, at the 1990 KVIFF.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why banned, you ask? Here\u2019s a synopsis: \u201cThree\u00a0people who are all orphaned by political violence, live In an unspecified time and place and face a tough, violent world. To survive, they adopt a childlike\u00a0approach to\u00a0life, living in joyful denial.\u201d<\/p>\n
