Now Dropout Wants Emmy Voters to Notice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tWith submissions in five Emmy categories, indie streamer Dropout is playing to win with its hit comedy panel game show <em>Game Changer<\/em>. Among the gongs it\u2019s gunning for are outstanding game show and host for Sam Reich, who believes their success is partially fueled by the fact that they\u2019re based in Los Angeles \u2014 and that won\u2019t be changing.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=2210\">\u2018Atlantic Rhapsody\u2019 Takes Top Prize at Shanghai Film Festival<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI can\u2019t imagine a version of the show, or Dropout, that isn\u2019t in L.A.,\u201d he enthuses of the Eastside studio space where they film many of their shows, including fellow Emmy contender <em>Very Important People<\/em>. (<em>Game Changer<\/em>, he notes, is filmed at various studios throughout Los Angeles \u2014 \u201cIt all depends on what chaos the season calls for!\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe live here. It\u2019s a community project, and it\u2019s nothing without its community of talent,\u201d Reich adds. \u201cIf we were to move to Canada or Austin, it would be a different group of people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHowever, Reich, who is also the streamer\u2019s CEO, wishes he could say that the city has been \u201cat all helpful\u201d in terms of tax breaks, lamenting, \u201cThey have not offered us a dime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Game Changer <\/em>is exactly what its name suggests: It\u2019s a game show where the game changes every episode. Not only that, but when the game starts, the players \u2014 an assortment of stand-up comedians and improv actors selected by casting producer Jazzy Collins (<em>The Bachelorette<\/em>, <em>The Traitors<\/em>) \u2014 have no idea what the rules are and have to figure them out as they chase a win. The show has already run for seven seasons. Its eighth premiered May\u202f18, and the ninth is underway, much earlier than usual.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe opened up a satellite version of the writers room in February,\u201d Reich reveals. \u201cWe won\u2019t be shooting until October or November, but I already have the short list of 15 ideas from which we\u2019ll choose 10.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOnce filmed, each episode goes through a six-month postproduction process. As each season rolls around, things get more complex.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe now have episodes that have 20-plus cameras,\u201d he says. \u201cSam Geer is my lead editor and also the director of the show. We have editors working with and under Sam on their own episodes, and episodes that are bouncing back and forth between editors as people become available or unavailable. Reich describes Dropout\u2019s shows as \u201ccriminally expensive by podcasting standards and criminally cheap by television standards.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThere is a rough-around-the-edges-ness to Dropout\u2019s content that I\u2019m reluctant to lose. It\u2019s a big part of our authenticity,\u201d Reich muses. \u201cWith <em>Game Changer,<\/em> you occasionally see offstage, and we incorporate crew into the show, referring to camera people by their first names and stuff like that.\u201d He can\u2019t imagine a world where <em>Game Changer<\/em> doesn\u2019t remain \u201ca fourth wall-breaking show.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe uninitiated might be surprised that <em>Game Changer <\/em>has amassed a fiercely loyal, very active online fan base. The show\u2019s Instagram has 1.3\u202fmillion followers, and more than 15\u202fmillion subscribe to Dropout\u2019s YouTube channel, where it posts eight- to 12-minute snippets of <em>Game Changer <\/em>episodes. Dropout itself has more than 1\u202fmillion subscribers who pay a monthly or yearly fee to watch full episodes of <em>Game Changer <\/em>and other series. That figure is one that Reich never anticipated when he created the show.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe No.\u202f1 streamed show in the world right now, which is <em>The Pitt<\/em>, has a ravenous online fandom, and you\u2019d expect that,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re online, and that\u2019s where our audience lives. What is surprising is that <em>Game Changer<\/em>, a game show, would develop this kind of a following, because you don\u2019t see <em>Wheel of Fortune<\/em> or <em>The Price Is Right <\/em>having this.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBetween <em>Game Changer<\/em> and <em>Very Important People<\/em>, Dropout has submitted in a total of 11 Emmy categories this year. Is now the time for the industry to take the silliness seriously? And what would that recognition mean for the future?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe could be 10 times bigger than we are today and still be 10 times smaller than the biggest fish, so the ceiling is still incredibly far away,\u201d Reich notes. \u201cIn terms of the rest of the industry opening up to us, an Emmy nod would be an incredible token of validation and would bring an audience that is probably skeptical about us. They might take a chance on us.
