\nGeorge Lucas is lending his voice for a character in Minions & Monsters<\/em>, the latest film in Illumination\u2019s Despicable Me<\/em> franchise.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview with Collider,<\/em> Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri revealed that the Star Wars<\/em> creator joined the animated feature, which opens in theaters July 1, after sharing his longtime admiration for the studio\u2019s movies. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had this privilege of meeting George about two years ago, and what led to my meeting him is how much he loves Illumination movies, and specifically\u00a0Despicable Me<\/em>, and even more specifically, the Minions,\u201d Meledandri said. \u201cIt was such a thrill to learn that and then to share it with the team, because obviously he\u2019s among a very small group of people who the entire studio shares a level of respect for that is just off the charts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMeledandri added that after the meeting, he pitched an idea for Lucas\u2019 casting in Minions & Monsters<\/em> to director Pierre Coffin, co-writer Brian Lynch and producer Bill Ryan.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAn idea for a character came up out of the story, and so I said to Pierre, \u2018Well, what if we could get George?\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018Are you kidding me?\u2019\u00a0I had no idea, but\u00a0I got such a fast yes,\u201d he recalled. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to have him in the film. I saw him recently, and he\u2019s already talking to me about the role he wants to do next in the next Minions<\/em> movie. So, it\u2019s pretty incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLucas ended up recording his lines in Paris. The voice cast also includes Jesse Eisenberg, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Zoey Deutch, Trey Parker and Phil LaMarr. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Minions were first introduced to audiences in 2010\u2019s Despicable Me<\/em> as the loyal sidekicks of former supervillain Gru (Steve Carell). They most recently appeared in 2024\u2019s Despicable Me 4. <\/em>The franchise has grossed nearly $5 billion worldwide at the box office.<\/p>\n
