If anyone knows about sisterhood, it\u2019s surely Haim, who\u2019s spent her entire professional career singing to hoards of fans alongside her own sisters.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHaim and Amanda Yamate co-scored the film, set to drop on Netflix Friday (June 19). The collaborators join <em>The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>on a video call to discuss the Leah McKendrick-directed film, their latest project with the streamer.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWhen we all watched it with Leah for the first time, we pretty much all just turned to each other and agreed this requires a love theme,\u201d Yamate says of the film\u2019s most vital relationship, which is not the one viewers might expect. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn <em>Voicemails For Isabelle<\/em>, Zoey Deutch plays Jill, who starts recounting her life adventures to her beloved sister that recently passed. Jill\u2019s relationship with Wes, played by Nick Robinson, is the romantic driver of the film, but her relationship with Isabelle, her sister, is the real centerpiece. The composers picked up on that quickly. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe main theme is a love theme for Jill and Izzy, the sisters. Wes and Jill don\u2019t even really have a love theme,\u201d Yamate says. The track, \u201cThis Party Sucks Without You,\u201d which <em>THR<\/em> is exclusively revealing, is repeated throughout the film. They add, \u201cIt\u2019s in there five or six times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tYamate and Haim jumped into the film quite early, as far as timing for composers goes. They built that main theme off the logline alone. \u201cWe like jumping in early because you just get to know each other as creatives for a little bit longer,\u201d Yamate says. They point out, however, that McKendrick had been working on the film for eight years. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re really big to experimenting as much as we possibly can on prescore, just to even see what\u2019s rattling around in our heads,\u201d says Haim. The musician says the pair treat it like a \u201cmusical word dump\u201d in a way. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe pair found moments for experimentation through some of Wes\u2019 moments. \u201c[He\u2019s] this hot Texas boy, so he had his own Texas sound,\u201d Yamate explains. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=2110\">Ron Howard and Brian Grazer Tease \u2018Grinch\u2019 Sequel (\u201cSomething We\u2019ve Thought About For a Long Time\u201d) and Weigh in on Success of YouTube Filmmakers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tFor \u201cThis Party Sucks Without You,\u201d however, Haim and Yamate decided to try some live winds and live string, which is when things started clicking. \u201cThose moments between Jill and Izzy are so raw and delicate that I feel like [that\u2019s] the instrumentation Leah was liking,\u201d says Yamate. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe score process for<em> Voicemails For Isabelle<\/em> was mainly typical for the partners, with a slight difference. \u201cThe process was actually that we just cried,\u201d Yamate jokes. Their collaborator agrees. \u201cOh my god, every day,\u201d Haim adds. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThis score was just special for us because we got to sing on it,\u201d Yamate says. The pair had never sung together before. Adds Yamate, \u201cIt just made so much sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFor Haim, the film was a bit more personal than most projects. It was a major factor in taking the project for the musician. \u201cIt was a rom-com, but it was really about family and loving and having such a deep connection to your sister,\u201d she says. \u201cClearly that\u2019s a huge component of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHaim also felt another connection with the film, particularly with Izzy, who was ill for much of their lives. \u201cI\u2019m a type one diabetic and have Hashimoto\u2019s and neuropathy, and a whole laundry list of ailments that can sometimes hinder me from living my best life,\u201d she explains. The musician notes that her sisters and bandmates, Danielle and Alana, are there to witness on a daily basis. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s definitely grating on me, but it\u2019s also not lost on me that it can be really exhausting for them too. But they never let me see that. They never make me feel like I\u2019m too much or I\u2019m a burden or anything that I need is too much,\u201d Haim says.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tShe adds, \u201cWhen you have chronic illness, you never want to be a burden on people.
