\nNetflix has swiftly canceled the Duffer Brothers series The Boroughs<\/em> after just one season, The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has confirmed. The show premiered less than a month ago.<\/p>\n

\nThe Boroughs<\/em> was highly anticipated as it represented Matt and Ross Duffer\u2018s first series after Stranger Things<\/em>, which is iconic in Netflix\u2019s history. Stranger Things<\/em> was sci-fi with kids, The Boroughs<\/em> was sci-fi with seasoned adults. Part of the problem here, a source tells THR<\/em>, is that sci-fi is expensive. Another piece surely is that the Duffers are taking their talents to Paramount. (The Boroughs<\/em> wouldn\u2019t have followed, but sometimes breakups are hard.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer\u2019s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their \u2018golden years\u2019 are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expects,\u201d the logline for The Boroughs<\/em> reads.<\/p>\n

\nThe Boroughs<\/em> starred Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O\u2019Hare, Clarke Peters and Bill Pullman. It had Cocoon<\/em> (1985) vibes.<\/p>\n

Dismissed by the powers that be as just another confused old man, Sam finds unlikely allies in a band of neighborhood misfits: a sharp-witted former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a cynical music manager, and a brilliant doctor running out of options. \n\tThough it was no Stranger Things<\/em>, The Boroughs<\/em> has ranked on Netflix\u2019s weekly top 10 each week since its May 21, 2026 release. Last week, it was number eight among all of the streamer\u2019s English-language TV. Still, Netflix (basically) said, \u201cDon\u2019t let the door hit you on your way to Paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Monday, Paramount dated the Duffer\u2019s secret event movie for a Nov. 3, 2028 theatrical release.<\/p>\n
