{"id":1984,"date":"2026-06-17T13:38:50","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T13:38:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1984"},"modified":"2026-06-17T13:38:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T13:38:50","slug":"hollywood-diversity-report-streaming-films-have-abandoned-women-and-people-of-color","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1984","title":{"rendered":"Hollywood Diversity Report: Streaming Films Have Abandoned Women and People of Color"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tRepresentation for women and people of color went down, down, down in streaming films in 2025 \u2014 and that\u2019s <em>counting<\/em> Netflix\u2018s smash hit <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1982\">Anya Taylor-Joy on \u2018Furiosa\u2019 Struggles, Being Bullied and Joining Middle-Earth<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tUCLA\u2019s latest Hollywood Diversity Report found that as the number of streaming films decreased, so did minority employment across directors, writers, leads and overall cast.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cAfter the big numbers we saw for diversity in streaming originals just a couple of years ago, we now see the path closing for people of color and women to premiere their film on a major streamer,\u201d said report co-founder Ana-Christina Ram\u00f3n, who is the director of the Entertainment and Media Research Initiative at UCLA.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tLead actors of color declined from 2024\u2019s all-time high of 51 percent to 36 percent in 2025 \u2014 from a majority to nearly a third. It was the first time in three years their share dropped below proportionate representation with the U.S. population. The share of streaming films directed by a woman continued to decline to 23.6 percent, the lowest this annual report, which began tracking streaming films in 2022, has seen.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThis is an industry in flux \u2014 and in reverse, especially when it comes to diversification,\u201d said Darnell Hunt, executive vice provost and vice chancellor at UCLA, another co-founder of the report. \u201cUnfortunately, as we\u2019ve seen with theatrical films, we\u2019re now seeing the impact of this current political climate in very meaningful and concrete ways. As budgets tighten, opportunities for filmmakers of underrepresented backgrounds are always the first to be squeezed out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe authors of the study blame backlash against DEI, industry contraction, and overall belt-tightening for the reversal of fortune. They believe diversity is treated as expendable or optional with budgets are cut.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThings don\u2019t look any better further down the call sheet. Just 25.8 percent of streaming films\u2019 casts were people of color, down from 41 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1980\">Storm Reid on Debut Single \u201cClean Sweep\u201d and the End of \u2018Euphoria\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt wasn\u2019t too long ago that streaming was the place where people of color and women found their footing,\u201d said sociologist and co-author Michael Tran.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThese trends away from diversity in films should raise alarm,\u201d Hunt said. \u201cAnd push the industry to action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe standout 2025 streaming film, for a variety of reasons, was <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cThe film is a prime example of how culture circulates and how diverse representation doesn\u2019t alienate audiences,\u201d said Nico Garcia, a doctoral candidate in UCLA\u2019s School of Theater, Film and Television who co-wrote the report. \u201cIt can bring them in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOne especially interesting statistic that jumps out about <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em> is that a larger percentage of households with Latinas watched the Netflix original movie than households with Asian women, UCLA found.
